I'm shooting with fx30 (active stab, focus breathing comp) crop crop.. and I'm using mostly FE lenses vs E (crop crop) intentionally and I'm wondering if I need to consider a 35mm prime for any reason other than compact footprint. I shoot mostly with 24-105 f4 or the previously mentioned 16-55 2.8 indoor controlled lighting. I'm sitting here with my Zeiss 55mm happy since the first day I bought it. The 50mm 1.2 is a dream lens. Thank you for your insight and for this comparison! Your conclusion has affirmed just how great the Zeiss 55mm still is.
Zeiss 55 was one of the first lenses I bought switching to Sony, love the compact size and beautiful color. Many moons later, I also bought the 50mm GM just want to have a f1.2, to me this GM renders a classic film like color and smooth transition of shadow similar to Hasselblad 80mm, it is very different from other Sony. It is very heavy and pricy, but I don’t live on photography so I don’t measure lens by cost benefit analysis; this lens gives me so enough pleasure and earned a permanent position on my camera.
whats really fascinating is that when directly comparing the same shot from both lenses the zeiss one doesn't immediately die. usually when directly comparing any other lens to a top-tier like that 50/1.2 the other one simply fades against the big step-up. this isn't the case here, for sure partly because 55 is a bit longer thus closing quite a bit of that bokeh-gap, but also because that lens strikes such a perfect balance of sharpness vs. micro-contrast (and maybe a bit of well adjusted aberrations in the oof areas). a big feature, a grand masterpiece of lens design!
that's why I bought the Sonnar, as well as the Samyang AF24 1.8, which can be compared to the 24GM in the same way, and as a third lens, the Samyang 135 f2 manual, which is an noAF copy of the 135GM.
Great video! I’m currently debating spending a lot of money buying a 50 GM f1.2 or f1.4 and my biggest concern is the CA wide open. Is most of it removable in post on LR or is it difficult to remove? I mainly shoot weddings
I’ve only had a handful of occasions where the CA was an issue in post. It’s especially bad during back lighting. But majority of the time it’s a quick couple of seconds in Lightroom to remove.
I have one question for you bro, now I have a sony a7 iii, 55mm zeiss and 35 mm gm, should I buy a new camera (sony a7 r5) or 50 mm 1.2 gm or 135 mm gm? What would you do?
Well, at min 4:39 it is extremely noticeable. What we see there it is call dimensionality, the so call zeiss 3D pop, something you clearly see on the zeiss 50 mm 1.5 ZM, even when adapted on Sony cameras. Pause the video, not on your phone but on your 4k tv or monitor (I'm on a 4k hdr 27 ") and check it out what I'm saying.
The 55mm 1.8 is right there with the 50mm 1.2. The 55mm 1.8 produces better skin tone than the 50mm 1.2. You can tell the difference in sharpness when you zoom in but that's pixel peeking at that point. The photos do pop more on the 50mm 1.2. For the size and quality, the 55mm 1.8 is one of Sony's best.
I agree. If you’re willing to deal with the CA and the flares and work around them. I think sharpness contrast and rendering dont justify the price difference unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️
do have the 55mm f1.8... its longitudinal chromatic aberration with f/1.8 and even 2.8 drives me nuts. Had to convert images unwillingly to black & white since corrections are almost impossible. Don't need an 1.8-lens if I have to shoot at f/4 or similar to get useful images. So I really start thinking about that GM - and to find a way to deal with its weight (and price). Thanks for the video. btw: table at 2:12 says "aperture f1.4 to f16" - pretty sure it's f/1.2 😉...
I bought the Zeiss as a poor mans 50mm f1.2 GM. I want the GM eventually but until then I wanted something better then the Sony Nifty50. I like the Zeiss and I thank you for this comparison.
Zeiss is sharper than the 1.2GM. Apart from the CA and the 1.2 stop is a way better lens if you consider the price, the weight and the overall quality value. I own the Zeiss since the first release. I have tested the 1.2GM and it is a wonderful lens, which i will buy, at the same time i know that i will use more the Zeiss 55mm 1.8.
I like the 55mm focal length much more than 50mm, I also like that the 55mm are compact and light, if you want a very good 50mm Lens and you do not need or want autofocus, then the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 50mm 2.0 are a very good choice ! I keep my 55mm !
Thank you for posting this! I was looking for this exactly. Definitely going to keep my zeiss i can't justify that 2000 price tag.50mm GM is beautiful tho. In my opinion 24mm and 35mm GM is worth the price and you'll be happy getting those lenses.

I would really like a new 85 built like the new 50. If they do make one I'll buy it. I like the current 85mm GM sort of. A few issues but I want that 85mm GM 1.2 built like the 50. The 55mm Sony Zeiss is a kick ass little piece of glass and one worthy to have in your collection when you need a light weight setup for a quick run and gun. I use my Sony Zeiss 55 all the time.
It is a nice piece of glass Considering it’s been 8 yrs or so since it’s release. Still holds up today. GM if you can afford. Best bang for money is the 55 zeiss 😀
I agree. Used to shoot 35 & 85, last year switched to 24 & 55 as I was always to cramped during weddings. The focal lengths are different enough to create two different looks in photos and even video imo. 55 is a beast i haven’t been nice to it if I’m being honest and it’s still working like a champ
I just needed an upgrade from my zeiss 1.4 I sold, it was heavy & a bit dated. I guess when I tried Sony 24mm 1.4 gm it was pretty epic sharpness & colors! So I’m excited about the 50mm1.2, I’ll probably just stop it down to 1.4 because I’m use to that will see. The reason is 1.2 can be a bit tricky with the light meter, I’ll have to test it out.
