    Thats really interesting what Tara said about competing while on period. Ive never really thought about it but that definitely would affect performance greatly and im glad she brought it to light. Definitely some research to be had there. Maybe Tara could market a drink or supplements aimed directly at women on that time of the month with iron etc

      You are so right, that time of the month women lose so much blood and they feel tired. Maybe they can come up with something to help female athletes, that would be a good ideal.

    • @emb098
      @emb098 Рік тому +6

      There’s a heap of research there already. However, because every person is different in symptoms etc. it is really hard to definitively say there is a negative or positive impact on athletic performance.
      There is a body of research leaning to the later half of the luteal phase (pre-period) that performance dips (jump
      Height and subjective questions). But we need more papers on it.

      I’m guessing you are male since you’ve never thought about it, but love that you added that more research needs to be done.

      Unfortunately female athletes don't get a pass when they are on their cycles. Us ladies are expected to work, compete and be on our top game, cramps and all Smh. A natural energy supplement with iron would definitely help during that time

    Thanks so much Tara for bringing up the period reality for woman, I’ve struggled with menstrual pain for a very long time…definitely couldn’t even come close to performing like you did while on your period. More open acknowledgment is so necessary…endometriosis doesn’t even have enough backed research to give the thousands of woman suffering immense pain an answer. You’re amazing 🙏

    I’m a 70’s and 80’s Track and Field athlete. Tara and the rest of the young ladies are very fortunate to have the proper tools when competing on their menstrual cycle. Really tired and sluggish. I know that I needed different nutrients in my body but unfortunately, we didn’t have the tools that they have today. Thank you for bringing this to light for a lot of female athletes that has the same problem.

    I have to admit that I wondered what happened in London so Tara talking about competing while on her period clears that up. I do think more female athletes are now willing to talk about this. IIRC it was about a year ago when a female golfer was asked what went wrong in the final round a major championship and said she got her period right before her round started. The interviewer - male - almost dropped his microphone. She just shrugged and said there's no reason to be ashamed or hide it because all women have to deal with it.

    • @bpraise517
      @bpraise517 Рік тому +3

      Isn't it known women have periods and it can be an issue to some sports (especially running). idk why it would be a microphone drop moment...ijs...

    I just want to say that you bringing up your period was really meaningful! So many athletes (esp distance runners) lose their period and think you are better without it; but you are showing that having a regular cycle is important to be a healthy and well performing athlete. You can be a fit athlete and train hard, whilst still being healthy on the inside

    Rooting for y’all always! You’re both incredible. Tara you spoke sooo much truth about what as women we have to endure naturally. I’m 42 now but, I vowed to never take bc at the age of 23. I e always had my cycle since 13 years of age bc on only took bc pills. However, in my 40’s I feel I’ve been the most annoyed with the struggles of my period. I no longer cramp or deal with headaches because I did a 30 day detox and took refined sugar completely out of my diet during that time and only have it sparingly now. Game changer!my frustration is the spillage know matter what I do and anxiety to go to work. I just wish woman could have 7-10 days of rest during our cycles! Tara you running with the Englis Bulldog was too funny! 😂Love y’all and looking for today the worlds! Get some rest in between! 🫶🏽🩷🩵

    Tara it’s funny you mentioned periods and competing. I came to some realisations recently about it all and Dr Mindy Peltz (I think that’s her name) has helped me understand that yes, we should be considerate of our cycles regarding physical activity.
    She has helped me immensely. I would reach out to her.
    It also made me think that us women are burning out because at times we feel we take up the heavier loads in life and don’t necessarily have men around us to do the heavier load of life and we push ourselves beyond our hormonal, mental, physical, emotional cycles and we get burned out.
    Society is really not geared around women and their cycles at all.

      @@Bibirallie I am not discounting the effectiveness of ibuprofen for you personally, but ibuprofen impedes protein synthesis. This is critical in hypertrophy and recovery, this is especially true in dynamic events due to the loading that takes place when executing a jump. This has been documented since the late 90s but studies from just a few years ago also came to the same conclusion. Just Google, 'Ibuprofen and negative effects on muscle growth'. These are peer-reviewed studies from reputable scientific journals (PubMed). I steer my athletes away from it. I have coached several age-group women to national titles/records and international golds/world-records.

All women deal with this and its an obvious reason many cheat. It is probably healthier to let your body be normal. You have a life beyond athletics. Take care of yourself!

    Why is it easier for men to be top athletes than women. That's why female success must be valued much more, you compete when you have your period. How many women have problems when they get their periods, terrible stomach pains, headaches, vomiting, your body is falling apart. No one knows that at that moment, at the competition, you have terrible ailments, and they are asking you for a top result.

    One thing that has helped me tremendously with training and competing while on my cycle (BJJ and Martial Arts) is exactly what Tara talked about, taking Iron and vitamins, but also just getting in extra electrolytes and fluids, eating super nutrient dense foods to give my body more fuel, stretching, being super intentional about my sleep hygiene and the ULTIMATE game changer, a menstrual cup. I personally have used the Diva Cup for like 5 years now, and it is so amazing, you don’t have to worry about leaks, constantly changing a pad or tampon, its so much better for vaginal health, and the best part, it helps with cramping. I hope Tara sees this and looks into getting the cup because I think it could really help.

    I always recommend a young lady or woman who's experiencing severe menstrual cramps to see an OBGYN, to make sure it's just her monthly cycle and not something more severe.
    I didn't learn until my friend became a nurse that a hot compress, a body massager, couple of bananas(potassium, magnesium, B6) helps with menstrual muscle contractions and a Tylenol(helps thin blood for better flow) really helps with severe cramps(menstrual cramps and those night time "Charly Horses"; that tight calf muscle lock at 3:00am-which in most cases is often associated with poor stretching, over exertion, but mostly dehydration)

    Doing anything on your period is no walk in the park. I definitely feel so weak when I’m in mine. I wonder what she does or wears to make sure there’s no leakage especially with the competition outfits T&F (and gymnasts) wear. I’d be terrified because my periods are so heavy, especially the second day.

    And to be super-boring, it's sensible too. Princess Diana would have been alive today if she'd worn her seatbelt in Paris.
    In any event, I hope you enjoyed your time in London. There aren't many major international athletics meetings in the UK, but you are pretty well guaranteed a sell out audience. Have a great time in Paris.
