When I think about why I don’t like From Software games, I think about why I loved God of War. When I played that the first time, I put it to hard difficulty. I died all the time but after I learned the mechanics, that happened less and less, even on bosses. That is not how Souls Born games work. When you meet a new boss, the game is designed to have you die at least once. That’s not fun to me. I want to be able to, in theory, play a game and never die if I’ve learned the basics of the game to the point of near perfection.

I'm glad to find a free thinker that is willing to say that From Software games aren't that great. I'm playing elden ring rn and I'm starting to ask "do I even care about this story or even completing this game?" It's like yay a hard boss, kill it, go find the next hard boss, repeat.... In most games u get a cut scene of something after a boss fight that unfolds more of the story but nah not in these games lol. Just confusion and an expectation to go kill the next big thing and see what happens 😒.

It’s the reason why I couldn’t bother with Bloodborne.
I played until the 3rd boss and couldn’t care less about the story because no story was presented.
Demon’s Souls has some mystery, Dark Souls 1 doesn’t, but has a very well designed world.

After the success of Demon Souls, FromSoft has just made the same game with a different name ever since. Sekiro is the only game during this span of success with a story you don't need Vaatividya to explain in it's entirety since Miyazaki had no clue how. And Sekiro and Elden Ring have been considered groundbreaking since they have an actual jump button to help alleviate some of the rage the god awful platforming sections require you to do. Hell, outside or Sekiro and Elden Ring, they couldn't be bothered to tell players the basic controls of the game.
Like you said, the difficulty is such a sensitive issue for longtime fans because they all know it's all those games have going for them. Ask any hardcore Souls player what any of the games are about(ie What's the story). They'll all give the same answer: "You have to play the game for yourself, collect every item in the game, and read the item descriptions in sequential order if you wanna know the lore." Absolute madness.

In my honest opinion I think most fromsoft's games paint the illusion of being hard without actually being hard. They seem super restrictiful and only really test your memorization. The combat is decent but it takes almost half a second after you press the button to attack. The dodge comes out so slow and after you release the button which is lame, sekiro and BB the dodge come out smoother. Ds3 you can barely find time to heal even if you create space with how long the animation is. Bosses in ds3 and elden ring have these instant dash attacks going across the whole stage. Fromsoft has a horrible camera and lock on system then add bosses that jump and fly all over the place but the lock on target breaks off. There is so many actions games that actually test your skills far better than fromsoft games if you play them on the hardest difficulties.

Don't attack until you get an opening. They are really telegraphed. That simply is the game. You simply need to learn the mechanics and there are plenty of ways to over level to make it much easier. Punishment system: you kill the enemies in the area and you rest for quite sometime let's say, it just make perfect sense for me for the area to be filled again, you killed some, others will find their way there
Story and player's motif: I believe the stories are awesome, and them being somewhat hidden, adds to the mystery. Also, just the atmosphere is enough to hook me in, just finding out what waits ahead in these worlds is enough for me to continue playing these games
Combat: I really like it, with Bloodborne's being my favourite. I like their simplicity, dodge at the right time, attack at the right time, done. Sekiro was a bit more complex, and I didn't like it that much, the bosses were incredible, and they would be possible only with this type of mechanics, but still not my fav. I tried GoW 2018 and I stopped bcs I was bored of the combat, and then I got into FromSoft games. It felt too much to me, just a bunch of stuff put together. I might be dumb, but I couldn't understand how it functions. In souls I hit, my animation ends, I dodge and avoid the attack thanks to a short window of i-frames, animation ends and I can hit again. I have to position my self correctly, find a way to take on the enemies one by one, look how they behave to be able to dodge their attacks or find a weakness and so on. I didn't feel that way with GoW, in it I would just run to them and start hitting, doing long combos bcs it felt I wasn't dealing any dmg, again I could just be playing the game wrong. About magic, I personally love melee, even in Uncharted until I die 2-3 times I would go melee even in a gunfight, it is so much more fun.
My only complaint with souls games is the platforming, but again I believe it has it's charm

That’s quite interesting that you didn’t like GOW combat because it’s more complex combos, etc. I’m the opposite of you. I really liked GOWs combat and loved that the controls were very tight. GOW has always been about combo heavy combat so maybe I just naturally grabbed onto it. They changed it quite drastically to emulate (not fully copy) the basic souls like over the shoulder light and heavy attacks. But it’s much more fluid and responsive.
I like souls games but I roll eyes at the combat more often than not. It’s very simplistic over all and once you have parrying down to a science it’s not very difficult, just have to learn the bosses. GOW has a lot more depth in combat mechanics. Souls games have more depth in character builds and various weapons. But those weapons are simple in their overall mechanics.

Lengthy rant ahead - be warned. This video inspired me to vomit up a lot of words.
The algorithm just sent me to this video, and I had previously seen your more recent video about Elden Ring. FromSoftware games interest me even though I will never play them. They are influential, so elements of their style might end up in other games, for better or worse, and the community of fans is interesting from the perspective of an outsider who gets some perverse entertainment out of observing fan toxicity.
I can't provide a personal evaluation on how good or bad these games might be because I have never played them and likely never will. I don't enjoy action combat, so the type of challenge these games present is a challenge that I have zero desire to meet. I have played games that include action combat, but I play them for other features, and I set the combat to the easiest possible difficulty and/or use cheat commands (if available) so that I can get it over with as quickly and painlessly as possible and move on to the fun things. If FromSoftware games had a ridiculously easy difficulty mode, I might try one of them to find out if there is anything to them besides the combat. One challenge I like is an inaccessible and obfuscated story that takes some effort to explore and interpret, so the difficulty of following the story in a FromSoftware game is something that I might enjoy. I also love exploration with minimal hand holding, and Elden Ring looks attractive from that standpoint. However, the combat difficulty is a barrier that I am unwilling to even attempt to surmount, so I'll have to look for these features in other games.
As for "git gud," I've been there, I've done that, and I'm done. I go all the way back to the late 1970s, and I wasted countless many quarters in arcade games trying to "git gud" because that was an activity that was new and exciting for children at the time. Arcade games from the 1970s/1980s have steep difficulty curves because they are designed to separate teenagers from their quarters as quickly as possible. I've never had good reflexes or coordination, so I burned through my quarters with lightning speed. For some inexplicable reason, I managed to "git gud" at Millipede but no other arcade game. Strangely, I'm still good at it and can clear a good many levels when I load it up on my Atari 800 or play the arcade version. Now that I'm in my 50s and have plenty of stress and bother in my day to day life, I look to video games for escape and relaxation, and the last thing I want is extreme challenge and frustration. Mental challenges are more my speed now, while I got my fill of physical challenges during my teenage years and I desire no more. The only sort of video game combat that I am able to enjoy now is something like the intricate 3-dimensional puzzles presented by the combat arenas in turn-based games like Solasta: Crown of the Magister and Baldur's Gate 3. Moreover, I'm tired of video games featuring combat in general, and I'm increasingly drawn to games that do other things well. City simulators and related genres occupy most of my gaming time these days, and I enjoy the much maligned "walking simulators" that provide challenges in the form of narrative interpretation rather than the mechanics of game play.
As far as I can tell, FromSoftware games are successful at what they are trying to accomplish, so the high ratings are likely justified, but they will always appeal to a niche audience that seeks out and prioritizes punishing difficulty in action combat. That's fine. There is nothing wrong with enjoying this aspect of video games and seeking it out. However, not enjoying punishing action combat is also perfectly reasonable, and not wanting to engage with it does not somehow make a person into a lesser gamer. Wishing for an optional easier difficulty setting in FromSoftware games is also perfectly reasonable and shouldn't be taken by fans as an affront to their identity, though the developers have made it clear that this is not compatible with their artistic vision so it isn't going to happen. We all have different tastes, and I hope there continues to be a wide variety of games to appeal to different types of gamers. Gatekeeping and trolling are unproductive activities that will only serve to piss people off. People who feel inclined to engage in such activities should step back, think twice, mind their own business, and enjoy their games.
