Pink Floyd is probably the biggest challenge a reaction channel could take on. Their standalone, radio airplay songs are one thing but to try and dig into an entire album may leave you scratching your heads. Their Animals album absolutely commands your attention, you may even forget about the pause button. I'm really looking forward to your reaction to the rest of this album, it's one that will stick with for the rest of your days.

Pink Floyd are the absolute masters in the use of reverbs and placement in the mix. They are a study in how to use space in a song; where to place each sound and how to paint a sonic landscape that is like nothing else out there. As has often been said, you don't listen to Pink Floyd, you experience them. This is a deep rabbit hole, but you choose a good starting point. Thanks for this and keep on with the rest of the album!

Al lot of that has to do with Alan Parsons, who was the engineer on DSOTM! You can hear a lot of the same stuff on Alan Parsons Project recordings too. (There's another rabbit hole for you guys....LOL!)

This album (along w/Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall) is one complete Opus, consisting of separate movements, so the songs don't end like a typical album cut, but flow into the next.
When you get the chance, listen to this entire album beginning to end without a break. You will be transported...I promise.

  • @fredsanford5954

I'd really recommend listening to the whole album at once. It's not so much a collection of songs as a continuous sonic story, so some tracks aren't really "songs". Life, death, war, peace, money and madness- a story of the human condition.

  • @franktrig

Many of their albums are concept albums, including Dark Side of the Moon which spent 741 weeks on the charts, from 1973 to 1988. The tracks usually go from one right into another. I wish I could go back and listen to this album again for the first time but doing it vicariously through you guys is the next best thing. Their intros often set the mood for the song and are often longer than on typical mainstream songs. Sit back and Enjoy!

Being studio guys yourself, you've got to appreciate what Floyd was doing, and this is way back in prehistoric times, the 70s. Dark Side is their opus extraordinaire. It was not only great music, but its message really touched a deep nerve with people, a message of life, greed, passage of time, death, and madness. This can't be listened to as individual songs. It is a true concept album that requires a complete listen, for not only do the themes overlap song to song, but the songs are often connected by musical transitions. Because of its greatness, one of the bestselling albums of all time, charting for 962 weeks with an estimated sales of over 45 million with only three albums having sold more copies in the history of music.

There were no loopers back in the day, so they made their own for the song Time.
What they did was take a looong loop of magnetic tape and on one end was an old reel to reel tape recorder, and that loop of tape went across the room and around a mic stand for the other tape spindle.
A looper before electronic loopers! So far ahead of their time...

The keyboard player Richard Wright sang behind David Gilmour on many songs over the years. When it sounds like GIlmour is double tracking it was usually Richard. They had a very similar sound, but Richard's voice was just a little softer and maybe an octave above David's.

Music and SOUND making of the highest order. A true aural experience, and live in concert a true enveloping audio visual feast of colors, images and sounds and experiences. This album towered over the 70s, its impact is almost impossible to calculate. 15-20 years on the Billboard album charts. EVERY 70S era teenager knew this album. It was played in Planetarium Laserium shows. It was Space Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Electronica, Progressive Rock, but also a bit of classical, blues and pop. Simply one of the most groundbreaking and creative group of musicians ever. Virtually every progressive rock band going forward was influenced by Floyd. This album was the 70s connection to what the Beatles started with Sgt Pepper in 1967. The thematic album, songs linking together, sound effects, unusual instruments, etc.

I'm pretty sure it's just David Gilmour, (PInkFloyd guitarist and lead singer), singing this song, yeah, Pink Floyd is very special man. They're a Rock Band but their sub-category is Progressive Rock, or Psychedelic Rock, or Acid Rock. Three different names that all mean the same thing.
Their music takes the listener on a cerebral journey through Time and Space.
This album is quite melancholy, or as you said, sad. "Dark Side of the Moon" is about Life, Death, and insanity. The insanity part is a reference to Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, but that's another story.
The album is one of the bestselling albums of all time, over 60 million copies worldwide. It's also regarded as one of the greatest albums in history!
Pink Floyd is a British Rock band that formed in London in 1965, an incredible, phenomenal Rock band that sold out 50, 60, and 70,000 seat concert venues for over two decades! They are Legendary

I think a good way of approaching Floyd/concept albums is the same approach you would use when listening to classical music. You typically do not listen to a single movement of a symphony. You listen to the whole thing so you can evaluate it as a hermetic work. If you don't want to do too much at once for each video, I would recommend taking it one album side at time. That's +/- 20 minutes.

Gentlemen, as others have said, this album is not one to listen to track-by-track, but as a whole. Otherwise it would be like reacting to a movie as scene-by-scene reactions. However, I understand the limitations of UA-cam. I will just leave you with this little fact: the album was released in 1973 and remained in the Billboard 200 album charts for two decades while remaining in record charts in some countries around the globe since (at least up through last year); it has sold over 14x platinum (just in the US), and has had a cultural effect far beyond simply its songs. Also, you mentioned a Beatles-ey feel with the vocals and such; the engineer on this was Alan Parsons, who has started his career as a young 18-year-old five years earlier working for EMI on the Beatles Get Back sessions and then Abbey Road. Enjoy this voyage, gentlemen.

It’s too bad that the format does not allow you the luxury of listening to PF’s music as a whole. It’s great that you’re doing the songs one by one, but this music, along with other Prog Rock bands like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer was meant to be listened to as a whole. This genre is very thematic and to really experience it, it should be listened to in one sitting. When you are finished with the album, I highly recommend that you go back and relisten to it in a dark room with headphones. It is an entirely different, unforgettable experience. Nice work. 🙏

Pink floyd were very influenced by the Beatles, they revorded an album at Abbey road, and they watched the process and some beatles sessions..
