Get a good GPS/FishFinder..they are worth their weight in gold...especially in unfamiliar waters...charts are marked with depths/sandbars/shoals etc. Have a Lowrance touch 9" on mine

it is not the best idea to run at speed with your hatches opened. They are not designed to work against that wind. They could break and hit you in the face. And maybe bring a tablet with navionics or something. It is pretty handy to see on the screen what depths you can expect ahead

Not a tablet - actual recent paper charts. Never rely on electronics - charts and a compass at a minimum. And look at them before you hit the water.
