Had a bf i was living with, said he would break up with me if i shaved my hair, broke up with him this year and temporarily moved in with my grandfather, who said he would disown me if i shaved my head, but i did cut it pixie short and was fine. A week ago i moved in with my sister and for the 1st time am living in a safe place. I think today is the day!

If you're young you're not "allowed" to have short hair but then if you're middle aged or older you're not "allowed" to have it long... I'm so fed up with these societal expectations.

I shaved my hair a year ago during our 1st lockdown in the UK. My ancestors were italian and my hair is so thick, hot and unmanageable! No hairstyle would stay put, and it cost me a fortune in hair cuts every fortnight. Part of me has always wanted to do it, so one day just grabbed the dog clippers and went for it. I've never looked back! I absolutely love it! I've had around 3 negative comments. 2 people thought I had cancer, and a third said she preferred it longer. I just jokingly told her its lucky I wasn't doing it for her! My eldest son said I looked like a lesbian but suspect he was messing around. Everyone else said it really suits me, and I wear it well! I'm never going back. I love it. For the first time in my life my hair isn't controlling me. It's cheap, easy to wash and dry, and ths eczema on my scalp is gone. Beauty comes from within and I hate that society says that women have to be slaves to style! If you are happy on the inside that flows though regardless of what we wear. I equally never touch make-up. People are more surprised at that than my hair to be honest. I just tell people I don't need it; I am beautiful enough without it. I just tell them that God has provided me with a beautiful face, and who am I to cover it up?

I’ve been shaving my head for almost 10 years! I started shaving for a cancer charity organization and loved it so much that I kept it. I feel much more feminine with it short. I did realize that I used to hide in my hair and that it did dictate my style. I love that I can be or do whatever I want now. I truly love that you have experienced this, and I think every woman should try it for herself. As for anyone who bullies or comments poorly, forget them. You look amazing!!! 🥰

I dont eat meat and its really annoying that everybody always asks me why?? Why do we have to offer explanations about our decissions or choices? You cut your hair, its ok. You wear always in black, its ok...Everything is ok if our choices are about ourselves and we dont hurt anyone with them

My hair, at 55 is short and so thin you can see through it. I want to cut it all off (though a friend is a professional makeup artist and hair stylist who told me prenatal vitamins, or Rogaine). I just want it all gone and as a restart, but am terrified. Did anyone cry over it at all? Please help me. I need a cup of courage. And a plate of faith. BTW I love your buzz!

I've had my hair buzzed to a #4 for about a month. I love it. I will probably grow it back again for a while, because I love change. What I have discovered is that EVERYONE has an opinion about my buzzed hair. Some love it, some hate it, some are confused by it, but, for some reason, everyone feels a need to voice their opinion. I struggle on and off with feeling less feminine, although the longer it is buzzed, the less I struggle with that. It has really been a great exercise in thinking about what femininity means to me and has helped me let go of my hair issues. My whole life I've given so very many hours to overthinking my hair - what style should I have, how long should it be, should I color it or not, why can't it have curls, etc. It is freeing to let go of that and just embrace having no hair. I spend about 10 minutes a week with the clippers and have to do nothing else to it all week. I have atopic dermatitis that also affects my scalp and that has been much easier to deal with while my hair is buzzed. It's also really nice to roll out of bed and have my hair look exactly the same as it did when I got in. Now that I've had it buzzed, I think that even though I'll probably grow it out again this fall, I will at some point buzz it again.

I’m glad you brought up the style change thing! When I shaved my head the first time, before I dressed really tomboy-ish and I didn’t like dressing that way after I shaved it. So I grew it out. But in these 2 years of growing it out I realized that dressing the way I do is me, and no matter if I have short hair or not, I don’t need to change the way I dress! I don’t wear makeup or jewelry either and I didn’t do my eyebrows. But now I do my eyebrows and they shape my face so much better and I feel like I’ll like my shaved head better. I’m doing it again today!

I think it's really interesting what you said about jewelery and make-up, that some people do more of that after they get a buzzcut. For me, it was the opposite; I felt like even small earrings could look too much. Kind of what you described about the smaller head without hair in comparison with a big sweater. I also found that cerain colours where harder to wear due to less contrast between between my haircolor (which gets lighter as the hair gets shorter) and my skin tone, which was interesting as well.
I too went shorter and shorter, as a way to not have to cut it as often, but also found that I didn't like it too short. The shortest for me was 3 mm on the sides and 6 mm on top which felt too short. I much prefered having 6-9 mm on the sides and 9-12 mm on top.
I never really thought about how having so short hair impacted my skin (apart from the imperfections being more visuable/harder to hide), but now that I think about, I find that my skin isn't as good now as it was with short hair (I've been growing my hair out since June last year).
Sigh, I really miss the simplicity of having really short hair. But everytime I buzz it off I end up missing my longer hair eventually, and it takes forever to grow it out, so I must stay strong lol.

I miss my buzzed so much. My boyfriend helped me shave it! loved the lack of attention it needed and it was a confidence boost being someone of my culture to do it and hopefully inspired someone in a positive way. I loved how different it was from everyone else. You stand out but you blend in too in some ways. My parents thought I was crazy and weird for doing it but even now with long hair and beforehand they thought that too so nothing new there! And, besides, the people closest to me saw me for me and not for my hair choices. And that’s what I loved. I can’t wait to do it again. I’m having fun with hair now. I have a different relationship to it and we’ll see how long it gets before I get sick of it again 😂

But i shaved my head about 2 months ago and I'm so glad I did it. I dont think about it, it doesn't weigh me down, and hiking in the breeze is amazing! Glad I decluttered my hair and I definitely think my confidence and style has evolved because of it

For the past 13 years I have been suffering from Alopecia Areata, which means that I get completely bold circular spots on my head. Somehow I have noticed that they appear when I try to grow my hair, so I am yet again with the shortest hair possible. Sometimes I wish I could experience having long hair or just feeling more feminine, but most of the time I am just happy with my smile, my hair and the fact that it takes exactly 10 seconds to dry. And I always like to remember that all that matter is being authentic and comfortable. After all short hair allows us to have freedom of mind and that is why Buddhist monks cut theirs :) No distraction at all...

People need to mind their own business. Someone shaving their head doesn't hurt people around them, so they need to buzz off. ( see what I did there? 😉) Seriously though. It can apply to anything at any time. When I was around my mid forties, I said oh, my legs are too fat and ugly with spider veins to wear shorts anymore. Then just a few years later I said screw everyone else. I went back to wearing shorts for coolness in the summer, and I said if anyone thinks my legs are ugly, they don't have to look at my legs, now do they?

I appreciate the fact that you are open to change. In all of your videos, it is obvious that are perfectly okay with modifying your clothes, hair, etc. as it best fits your life. You don't see your lifestyle in "black and white". You see your lifestyle, fashion, whatever as YOURS and it changes as YOUR opinion dictates. It's important for people to realize that it is acceptable to change their mind or improve upon what they choose. Thank you for being so real.

I buzzed off my long hair after watching your video after you did it Lia. I agree that people feel they have to make some kind of comment or offer some reassurance that it looks okay as if it was some sort of accident. I love the ease that comes with short hair and I have a bin of styling tools and products I don’t need anymore. Also when it’s windy out I don’t have to secure my long thick hair. I rarely wear makeup and jewelry. Some people I knew thought I was a boy visiting my house. It’s just hair and I may grow it back or not but I’m enjoying the experiment!

I really liked your hair before, it has a wonderful colour and you could tell it's wavy, but I also like your buzz cut, it makes your skin glow. I've noticed that people tend to comment when one loses weight or suddenly has way shorter hair, might be that it makes them curious about our health, but that shouldn't discourage us to choose whichever look appeals to us. Enjoy your shorter hair and the time you save by not having to style it!

oh my, I had really strong wish to shave my head 5 years ago when I was finishing my degree, but I still wasn't brave enough for that. also I lived in a not so tolerant society at that moment, and I was afraid that bullying against a bald woman can go physical. i like that shaved head reminds me about monks and their concentration on their thoughts, not their hair. I've had my buzzcut since just over half a year and I absolutely love it! It is much less work it is nice and cool in the summer and does not get sweaty and one random thing I noticed is this: I love wearing hats but Berlin is quite windy. So I could not wear them because they would fly away. Now the short hair actually gives a lot of "grip" and I can wear my beloved hats again without them flying away. 😊
I am a bit scarred for the future though, because in the next year or two I will be reentering the workforce (now I am sick with depression) and I am scarred to have a disadvantage in the job application process. Because we all know that appearance and attractiveness plays a huge role in first impressions and such. And even though I absolutely love it I do see that I look less feminine now that my hair is short. I do not know yet if I will start growing it out once I am ready to apply for jobs or if by that time I will be brave enough to try it like this. But yeah, that is a fear that I have. Especially with my academic background and desire to work with people (so not just sitting in an office behind the scene).

Thank you for sharing! I think you look beautiful 😊. I also shaved my hair last March, a lot shorter actually, the shorter I could go just with the machine. I decided it last year, but I decided to wait for the spring. My experience has been similar, my haircut is definitely a style statement, my friends tell me my looks and outfit look more cool just because I have shorter hair 🤣 I have had a lot of positive reactions from my closest friends and family, my grandpa was the sweetest, he hugged me and told me I looked so beautiful. In terms of attention, in the street I see people staring at me and that is a bit uncomfortable, I hope it will normalize in the future. And yes I have been loving it!! Mm - I buzzed my head about a year ago and have repeatedly buzzed it over and over again, thinking I would grow it out and it never felt good. I also find that living in two different cultures really has affected me. When I'm in Austria (where I live), no one thinks anything about it. But when I'm in Los Angeles (my home town), I get the strangest looks. It's just hair!!!!! My family here in LA doesn't really care for it it either - they think that long blonde is the 'so cal' thing to do I'm sure they think I look like a thumb. It's really annoying. But I love it. My husband loves it. My clothes are a little different on me too - collared shirts look not the best anymore. I think you look great - I love your aesthetic and your whole vibe. You do you boo. xoxo

I hate pimples on my face. I don't get them very often, but they do show up sometimes. Even as a 51 yrs old. I think you look cool! I have to say also, that when you did hair, I thought if was very natural beautiful hair. I think it's important to feel what oneself want, not what other wants. No matter with your very short hair or longer, you look good in your clothes. And comfortable clothes, cozy, soft to the skin, we both have in common. Stereotypes are for people that think ignorance is bliss. And I just ignore people like that. Much love💗♥️🌻

I did get my hair cut extremely short too, about 6 years ago, I just got tired of it and decided to get rid of it… the beautician ask me if I realize how many of her clients would love that hair on the floor. 😂😂😂 it almost looked like a small dog as I have fairly thick hair! I did let it grow out again. I decided that tattoos are so permanent and a lot of people get them, hair cuts come & go it will definitely grow back 😀💕

@@ecofriendlia I think maybe I just grew up associating fairer features with femininity. I'm a white woman but I have black hair and eyebrows (think Southern Europe) and I was bullied a lot for looking like a man growing up cause I had the complexion associated more with like "hairier ethnicities" or at least ethnicities that have more visible hair cause it's so dark (at least this is the case in Europe and North America). Because of this I think I just feel like I don't look very "pretty" with sort hair. Thankfully, these days I really enjoy looking masculine sometimes too :D

I'm contemplating getting a buzz cut! My hair is thin, completely straight, and oily. I have to wash it about every 1-2 days just so it's not greasy and it's aweful because whenever I try to style my hair it just doesn't stay up because there's either not enough oil or too much, plus the straightness of my hair. I cut my hair into a pixie but I don't think it's short enough because if I got a buzz cut I wouldn't have to deal with this anymore!!!

From a practical aspect a buzz cut in summer is cool and comfortable and in winter longer hair is warmer. It would be really easy to buzz it in the summer and let it grow long in winter. Less work more practical.

I find myself only wanting to watch your videos with it shaved. Even the one’s you upload recently but were filmed preshave, I’m all “nooooo I want the shaved!” I think it looks amazing on you. There’s a girl at my son’s middle school with blonde shaved head and even from afar she is just beautiful and glowing. I have a massive mane of wild frizzy bumpy loopy knotted freeform locs and some days don’t want anyone to see me, and other days I’m like f it, I’m tired of caring. I let it go because I was tired of fighting my hair everyday. And my man’s hair is as long as mine ;) mid back.

Haha, that is interesting! But I think I sometimes feel similar when I look at old pictures or videos of myself ☺ yes, that is a topic too, usually for kids, it's even harder having a length that is not associated with their gender. My son used to love long hair but he always gave up and wanted to cut his again when other kids started making fun of him. And when I cut my own hair pretty short in 8th grade everybody used it as a reason to bully me... I am sure your locks look great! Hair can be beautiful in so many different ways ☺

I have sensory issues with long hair AND having a buzzcut. I've done both many times. Long hair drives me mad: it's hot when it's down and it hurts when it's tied up- and a buzzcut head itches when I lie down or wear hoods/ hats. I've also found that as I grey at the front it looks more like I have a receding hairline, and as I'm older people tend to assume as a default that I've had/ am having chemo. I'm not sure there is a hair length that I DO feel comfortable with, tbh. I have trichotillomania which is better when my head is shaved, but I tend to scratch and skin pick more when my head is shaved. I don't know what the answer is- Short but not buzzcut hair, or chin-length at the longest. But then I am dependent on others to cut my hair, which I'm not keen on either.
I think the buzzcut looks good on you. Very classic.

There's a hairstylist that's got quite a following here on yt reacting to women shaving their heads and I watched that video before shaving mine, it was so encouraging. Fuck what people think. I have been mistaking for a boy but it really doesn't change who I am - I have learned so much more about myself when the hair was gone and all that's left really was me.
If you want to do it, do it. It's so worth it - even if you don't like it, it will grow back and you can tell yourself you had the guts to try at least

I have long blond hair. My partner has asked me to leave it long because that's his preference. I have also had it short and dark. Tastes change over time and hair can grow and be cut depending on how you want it to be. Just be happy with yourself.

Yes absolutely! And while I think you should do what feels best for you, I would also maybe have the haircut my partner likes best on me if I didn't have a preference ☺ (I think that is an interesting topic. For some people, it is a no-go to do something your partner doesn't absolutely approve of and then others would never let any opinion from others guide a decision )

Hi La. My mother always had short hair, even back in the 1960's and to me short, medium or long is fine. I think some people look better one way than another, but that's just preference. My hair is long, middle of my back and I have a short beard that I grow and shave, grow again. When you first cut your hair I thought the middle length was striking and I'm curious to see how it grows out this fall if you decide to. I'm going to cut mine as soon as I figure out how I want it to look. I'll get someone to cut it in a style that suits me. 😀

Hair is always a problem for women, our whole lives...men have it so much easier. Any nasty comments you get says more about the kind of person THEY are, than it does about you. Those peoples' opinions don't count. Just ignore them, sweetie.
