    In this video I show you how to fix that crazy oil pressure gauge problem on your 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup with a 4.7 liter engine. The Oil Pressure sending unit/oil switch is a common problem on many makes and models but a Chrysler Product will need it sooner or later.

    I just want to say thank you! This past Saturday my oil pressure gauge started doing this and man it freaked me out. Just had work done on my '07 4.7, and thought something was seriously wrong. Saw your video and checked my wire and sure enough oil in the connection. Changed the sensor in about 30 minutes and so far it seems like that was the issue. Again thanks and great video to show how to fix it.

      I think my 2008 1500 4.7 might be the same problem. It started after driving from IA to NJ on the beginning of the return trip to IA.
      How much oil was lost changing the sensor?
      I also have that same coolant leak into the oil filter drip tray. I haven't found the cause of that yet either.

    In my '04, the pressure would drop to the peg. If I revved the engine, it would go back up, for awhile. Then one day, it would no longer do that. So I put a new sending unit, and it works great. Easy and cheap.
    You can get to it through an open space above the fender liner, driver side, just to the rear of the computer. You have to slide the red clip laterally and press a lever, to get the plug off. That's the hard part. An 1-1/6" six-point deepwell socket works, and you can also buy a special socket for it.
    I didn't lose even a drop of oil. Not sure why.

    I've got the big 3.7 in my Ram and it started doing this today. Thanks for the suggested fix. Much easier than an oil pump. That looks like a huge job to get through all of the timing chains just to get the oil pumps off these things. My truck only has 104k miles, so I think the pump is fine, and no weird noises or other symptoms. I had a suspicion that it would be the oil pressure unit.
    Take'r easy!

    @Hot Rod Dave, thanks! I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7L HO engine, and the oil pressure gauge would drop to 0 when stopping at a light or any time the RPMs dropped below about 700. I replaced the oil pressure sending unit and cleaned the connector since it was full of oil, and I have made several trips and the problem has not reoccurred. If it's not leaking it out it's burning it. I have seen a lot of 4.7s with that issue. It sometimes is the valve seals, leaking or the piston rings are worn. How many miles do you have?

    Just picked up an 03 Ram with a 5.7. Hoping that engine has a similar placement of the gauge. If the truck sits for more than a few hours turned off it is guaranteed the oil pressure gauge will be at zero and the check gauge light will be on the first time you start it. But, if you turn it off and start it up again it kicks in. Hoping a new gauge will fix the issue and hopefully fix the oil leaking as well!

    Process of elimination: (please correct me if I'm wrong)
    I have 04 "4.7" 320+k miles. Oil pressure holds steady until warmed up. then drops to -0- and then back up. Sort of continuous cycle while idling.
    I've been having this problem for quite some time. Among many other things.
    Did an engine flush, then new oil & filter. So now I'll move on to the next step. Process of elimination.
    1. Clean / replace sending unit.
    2. Clogged pickup tube.
    3. Oil pump
    4. Lower main bearings?
    Thank Dave for putting time into these videos~~!

    • @HotRodDave

    could you give us more detail about the time someone mixed coolant? red and green because here recently ive done just that not realizing what might happen. • @HotRodDave

      Some coolants you can mix but some you can't. It can cause problems with the aluminum parts and can gel depending on what you mixed together. I have not seen it cause a no start but any thing is possible I guess. Sounds like you have something different going on but I would flush all of that coolant out and start over with new coolant

It starts when fully stopped, then progresses to go dead the moment I take my foot of the gas, to eventually not working at all until I let it sit for a while, usually takes about 30-60 minutes of driving before it initially starts. I'm going to be replacing mine as well.

    Great video, question for you we have a 2005 Dodge truck we are holding onto for the granddaughter, it only has 95K on the mileage, it was her great grandfathers.. just yesterday when I came to a stop sign it triggered the check gauges and the oil gauge went to zero (also the RPM gauge isn’t working) once I started driving it corrected itself. It did this one more time about an hour later. We checked the oil it was approximately 1 1/2 quarts low so we put oil in I drove it to work this a/m same thing check gauges light as I came to a complete stop ... the dilemma is my daughter fears something more is going on because the RPM gauge is wonky thinking it’s going to be an expensive fix AND she thinks 95K is way too high for mileage (I’m thinking there’s a ton more miles to be had!) there are no engine clicks, ticks, or other issues it drives smooth no sluggishness or any issues otherwise. Her fear is engine issues or a situation where it runs well until it doesn’t Since she’s a single mom what should she expect in costs to have this done at a shop?

    • @HotRodDave
      @HotRodDave  2 роки тому

      Some models have loose connections behind the instrument cluster that would cause the gauges to malfunction. I can't remember what years. I would check that and check the oil pressure sending unit and do a pressure test. these things are easy and shouldn't cost but a few hundred dollars at a shop. The cluster can be removed on some and the wiring connector can be moved from it's plastic holder to make a tighter fit when the cluster is reinstalled. About an hour labor for the cluster and another hour for the oil pressure sending unit with cleaning out the oil from the connection and another hour for a pressure test should cover it but there could be more and those things may not apply to yours at all. I hope this helps and I would want to keep it with only 95 K miles it should have a very long life left in it.

    • @pelassancho24
      @pelassancho24 2 роки тому +2

      That truck hasn’t even been broke in. Your daughter is a spoiled brat. Your oil pressure problem will fixed by replacing the oil pressure sensor. $34 at the auto store. The rpm gauge could be have several fixes but rest assure it can be easily fixed.

    When it read zero at operating temp did it ever go up to the middle when you gave it gas?

    • @HotRodDave
      @HotRodDave  6 місяців тому

      They can do all kinds of funny things when oil is in the connector or up the wire. That's why I say and stress you need to run a manual gauge test at that port to get a true reading to determine if you have a oil pressure problem or an electrical problem. I have had to cut several inches of wire out due to oil way up in the wire.

  • @mikesmotorsportsgamingrevi4814

    My dad's 2001 Dodge Ram recently did this when he was on his way home from work it freaked him out oil pressure was 0 but there didn't seem to be any tapping noises or anything so we ended up using it to pull our car up the hill the other week when it got stuck in the snow and it worked just fine so I believe this might be the problem

    Mine is a 2500 with the 5.7, I'm having an issue to where my gauge is saying I don't have oil pressure and then I do. I put a new one of these on and it seemed to get worse. I've not been able to get ahold of my mechanic but he said I had something at the back of the motor block that had 2-3 wires attached to it and it controls my gauge but the parts stores can't seem to get a listing. Going down the road I have no knocks, loss of power and generally I am running great. Just the gauge keeps going off and on with the check gauges light dinging at me.
