Have to agree with others here. The overuse of chalk and proliferation of tick marks (seldom if ever removed) make climbing higher impact than it needs to be. I like to climb and just use my pants to dry my hands while trying to avoid the use of chalk altogether.

Essential!! Really? I've never used it, I might not be climbing 5.14 but I'm happier not to and be limited in my scope than make a massive mess.
