And... following. I have been climbing 2X a week since I bought by membership months ago and THIS is the video I needed. Fortunately the staff walked me through the etiquette but - this is SO much more. Thank You.
This is the type of video that should be shown to every beginner at every climbing gym. Very comprehensive and something I'd share with people I know who are interested in climbing but are a bit intimidated. There are definitely a ton of videos out there that share the same information, but they aren't condensed into one video and I feel like you were able to succinctly explain the most important bits of info that newbies need to know :) Thanks for another great video!
Finally THIS is how you do an introductory climbing video. People are out here using really complicated concepts and language for beginners and I’m just like WHAT DO I GRAB AND WHERE DO I PUT MY LEGS?!
finally a proper beginner video! i have been looking for some beginner information because lots of people i know suddenly started climbing within the last years and those colorful things look like so much fun! but honestly, that skin video you mentioned in the end... if my hands get hurt, i don't wanna do climbing.
Im glad to help and I totally get what you mean about the skin thing - it’s preventable! You can have all the fun without the pain - hope this helps you feel like you can still go climbing
Your videos are so helpful!! I hope you keep making them, I saw that you latest upload was 7 months ago 😢. You’re one of the only climbers I’ve found that actually gives instructional information on how to improve (especially just getting started).
hi, i never climbed before but im planning to. for me the scariest part is to fall, and im sure that your tip to hold the knees will save my life at some point so thanks in advance! :)
I had a freak accident and let go off the wall and i spun in the air and landed in a squat one leg at the time and tore my quad off the patellar tendon. Surgery and 10 months off. I am back now but a little skittish
I just had my second climbing session and I'm starting to o be really into it. ❤ I only have problem with supporting and advices from the others while I was climbing. I see other climbers like it and its somehow a part of a whole culture, but I always felt really under pressure, I was thinking just "please shut up, I can't concetrate..."😂😂😂
can you have a video just for the exact hand, fingers positions for crimp? I don't see any videos online that explain or explain so clear that I understand. How to place the fingers against what type of crimp, then how it should feel. Thanks
I went bouldering first time with my nephew as he was so keen and he has done it. My friend was there with us and he was an experienced climber. We went on cheap student night. A lot of students. I went with zero experience with so many people with experience inside the shop. I felt so embarrassed and intimidated to try anything. I did try a few but not a lot. I felt like everyone was staring at me. I later grazed my elbow and knee cap too.
Hey man! Can relate. Eventually I found out the bouldering community is really nice and most of the time they just watch someone climb out of curiosity :) if you liked it don't be deferred, all of the people that are good at bouldering were beginners at one point as well!
Technically still a new climber at 6 months, and I still learned something from this video: The actual reason why we pivot. I kinda just instinctually do it but now I'll be able to apply it better knowing the reasons. Something I don't understand is the importance of body tension. Wouldn't it be better to be as relaxed as possible, while giving maximal or enough effort where needed?
Great question! It wasn’t too long ago when I was wondering the same thing. But wow! Now that I understand what it actually is and how to use it, I totally get the hype. That being said, i haven’t mastered it yet and still find certain movements challenging to keep tension. A common misunderstanding is that tension refers to the whole body to “tense up.” However, you always want to keep your hands and arms as relaxed as possible so you don’t get pumped. Tension is typically referred to when you are keeping your core tight. Without the tension, you wouldn’t be able to hold your body close to the wall and you’d require more arm strength and grip strength to stay on the wall. An awesome thing about tension is that your core is a huge muscle group so it can handle tension longer and more often then what your upper arms can handle. Things like drop knees, for example, requires body tension. This is a video about body tension and drop knees specifically that might be helpful for you in this part of your journey ua-cam.com/video/G8igGVRT79w/v-deo.html I hope this helps!
I fell few days ago a second before my second hand touched the top point. I fell on my face because it's so fast I don’t know how to react, many bruises on my nose, hands and legs, all my friends super worried because it’s pretty bad fall. but I came back again and I finished few first level. It was my second day climbing. if you have more explanation how to fall when this happend (when I'm not in control to fall), that will be great. thank you. I'll do fall practice from this video as my warm up tomorrow though >_
Since we are apes and part of the family of great apes i think of most of these things jas common sense even tho I've never even seen a rock climbing gym nor did i ever try anything related.
Hey! I've been following you for a while, and found your videos to be very helpful. I just wanted to thank you, and ask you if you are planning to make a course about bouldering from ground up (all the techniques that you talk about, workouts, drills, etc.) on Udemy or some other platform? I'd definitely love to buy that one from you.
Thank you so much Michael, your comment means a lot to me and I’m so happy that my work has been helpful for you! Seriously made my day! I don’t have a course in the works right now but that isn’t to say I won’t ever have one. I’m still learning a lot and am happy to continue sharing what I learn here on YT :) Thanks again for your comment!
Great question, John. When it comes to crimping, we may be tempted to put our thumb on top of our fingers to increase strength on a hold which makes your hand curl closer to a fist - this puts additional pressure on your tendons and thus increases your chances of tendon injuries. That’s why I recommend an open crimp/three finger drag crimp position where your palm isn’t curled. Its a bit more advance then what this video is about but I did an entire video series that I recommend watching with a Eric Horst (coach/pro climber and founder of Physivantage) on my channel for tendon health in which we talk about crimping along with other aspects of training and how to maintain tendon health with exercise and nutrition to prevent injury and increase tendon strength
Bro the Wall doesn’t care if you’re fat or weak. You will struggle the same amount as a body builder will, the Wall does not care for the Wall treats everyone the same. So go out there and try! It’s a great way to burn energy and exercise almost every part of your body. I was sweating when I was only done with a few climbs
I haven’t had really long nails or fake nails while climbing so I can’t speak to that. I can say that long nails on tiny holds, whether it actually makes a difference or not - it feels different. When my nails scrape on a hold, I’m not as confident on the hold. But I don’t think it actually affects your grip that much
Sorry, but the first 3 minutes is completely irrelevant for about 95% of the worlds population. As an American this might surprise you, but the vast majority of us have our own language, and we call the holds entirely different things.
Hold names are basic beginner stuff, so of course it's included in the video. You clicked on a video with an English title. It's reasonable to expect the whole thing to be in English. I wouldn't watch a video titled in German and then complain that the auf Deutsch hold names are irrelevant to most people, that would be silly.
And... following. I have been climbing 2X a week since I bought by membership months ago and THIS is the video I needed. Fortunately the staff walked me through the etiquette but - this is SO much more. Thank You.
I’m so glad that it helps and Welcome to climbing!
Wow that's so sad 😢

I just started climbing two weeks ago and this video is sooooo helpful for a v0 newbie like me haha!! Thank you for making this video!❤
I'm glad it was helpful! welcome to the climbing community :)
What a FANTASTIC video. Thank you. I just sent this to my friend whose coming with me.
I just started about a month ago. Your site is super useful, and this video is a great summary. Thanks!
Welcome to climbing! I’m so glad that you like the site and this video, thanks for your comment, Robert!

thanks for that mate gunna put off a lot of beginner climbers
Thanks for this. Very clear and concise. As a beginner this is really what I was looking for!
Going this weekend for my first bouldering session, great info, get advice. Thank you🙂
How did your first session go ?
nice video to brief beginners about safety in the gym. thanks
Glad you liked it
Great vid, lovely vibe. Subscribed.
Very well done! Thank you. You inspired me to try boulders.

Seriously, I feel you! It can be way too much sometimes. Just focus on your own thing and tell the advice-givers to chill.

Glorious video. Now I won’t look like I’m trying to bench 260 on the wall

This is the best video! It has everything I want to tell my new climbers! Thank you!
When i climb it reminds me about naithan drake i uncharted lol

@@SendEdition You are welcome, totally deserve that!
Oh I see, then I'll keep learning from you on UA-cam🤠
What do you mean by keeping your palm open while crimping?
Great question, John. Worried I'm to fat and weak to even contemplate starting 😢
Just do it!!! There are beginner sections. Start living your life and watch yourself feel better and lose weight slowly ❤️
If you can use an interest or passion as a crucible to jumpstart a long term goal you already have it made. Take the first step, the rest will follow.
Everyone's got to start somewhere.
Bro the Wall doesn’t care if you’re fat or weak. You will struggle the same amount as a body builder will, the Wall does not care for the Wall treats everyone the same.

I feel ya, I use to be fit but now I'm huge after some injuries and health issues...
Must say though the replies to this comment are positive af
Does long nails affect up your grip?
I haven’t had really long nails or fake nails while climbing so I can’t speak to that. I can say that long nails on tiny holds, whether it actually makes a difference or not - it feels different. When my nails scrape on a hold, I’m not as confident on the hold. But I don’t think it actually affects your grip that much
Someone once told me that you're climbing with your feet and using your hands to balance
that's a great way of putting it!
The tip about putting your toes into the wall is the opposite of what many climbers have told me...
You look like Captain marvel
This is the biggest complement ever - thank you!
I am 70
.A m i too old?
Sad that anyone even coming to learn this on video when they should be learning this in real life😢
Why would a fake wall intimidate you?
What's a fake wall? It looks real to me
I am guessing its because some people are scared of heights???
Sorry, but the first 3 minutes is completely irrelevant for about 95% of the worlds population. As an American this might surprise you, but the vast majority of us have our own language, and we call the holds entirely different things.
It doesn't matter what they're called...just go by the shape dude lmao c'mon
Hold names are basic beginner stuff, so of course it's included in the video. You clicked on a video with an English title. It's reasonable to expect the whole thing to be in English. As an American, huh? Lol. Nice.
When i climb it reminds me about naithan drake i uncharted lol
Why would a fake wall intimidate you?
Because people injure themselves every day climbing?
