  • The case is about Alvin Bernard Ford, who was sentenced to death in 1974. He was later diagnosed with a mental illness called Paranoid Schizophrenia With Suicide Potential in 1982, which made it difficult for him to defend himself in court. His attorneys wanted a hearing to determine whether he was competent to be executed, but the state court denied it. They then filed for habeas corpus in federal court, where the district court denied their petition without a hearing. The court of appeals granted a certificate of probable cause and stayed Ford's execution. The Supreme Court was asked if it is constitutional to execute an insane person, and if the district court should have held a hearing on the matter.
