ALS is a despicable disease. Have a friend that will ultimately pass from this, so please take a moment and thank God for your health. Regardless of how crappy life is these, we are so fortunate. Mr. Sklar, thanks for sharing just a fabulous band.
Thank you for being part of the fabric of my life. You were always in the midst of whatever music I was listening to...each decade. I would listen to an album, look at the liner notes and think oh there’s Lee. You’ve been like a constant musical friend. You have also inspired my own musicianship. So from the Midwest please accept my warmest virtual handshake and a hearty bro hug. Keep on keepin on.
Lee, thank you, personally, for bringing me out of a very dark place with your video post last night. You are a compassionate hero and an inspiration. (And this is exquisite playing here, as usual. Just awesome!)
I know who Anthony Newley was. BTW, there is only one constant in all your stories and that is you are part of them. So many people have come and gone and you have been the thread connecting all of them. Thank you Mr. Sklar.
Toto videos roll steadily into my UA-cam feed. (Probably thanks to you, Lee.) The god-like musicianship floors me every time, causing me to lament evermore the passing of those amazing Porcaro brothers.
You should do a Darryl Hall concept..Live From Leland's house. Bring in some guest musicians into the office. Your buddy behind you can play cowbell. 😃😮
Anthony Newley - I seem to remember was married to Joan Collins (Dynasty) at one time. He had a lot of hits here in the UK, before rock music got more of a grip - Strawberry Fair and Pop Goes The Weasel were fun novelty songs, and ballads like What KInd of Fool Am I? And he had a stage and film career too. A big name in his day.
I have seen you on this tour with TOTO in France, it was very nice moment . I hope you can come by playing soon in France . Take you care , stay healthy , music needs you .
Brother Lee. I can still see Anthony Newly singing:”What Kind of Fool Am I “. On Ed Sullivan. Thank you for the memories. I miss Tower Records, Licorice Pizza, and Music 🎶 City. Have a great Sunday. God bless.
Toto - awesome band! Thank you Lee Sklar for providing wonderful stories, inspiration, uplifting thoughts and especially hope during a dour period of curfew and sustained lockdown here in Melbourne Australia.
It is always such a treat to see your artistry and to hear your stories, Lee! I had the good fortune to see Toto just before Mike left, basically the same band that you performed with in Paris. I have some great photos from that afternoon, and many fond memories. Thank you for providing the essential sound track of my entire life, and please take good care of yourself!
Loved this one. I discovered you in the 70s through your work with Linda Ronstadt, my favorite female singer ever. I hope you will talk about your work with her sometime in the future.
Anthony Newley - what a great talent. Actor of stage & screen, singer, songwriter. He co-wrote “Goldfinger”, “What Kind of Fool am I”, “Feeling Good”, and the music to Willy Wonka, including “The Oompah Loompah song”, “Pure Imagination” & “The Candy Man”.
Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley wrote the lyrics to Goldfinger. John Barry composed the music and had Michael Caine staying at his house at the time. Caine couldn't get any sleep as Barry was "banging away at the piano all night". In the morning Barry told him it was the Goldfinger theme. Caine was the first one to ever hear it.
I'm so inspired by your channel that I bought my first bass. Can a 64-year-old dog learn new tricks? We'll see. I'm grateful for the piano lessons I hated in grade school -- it was all covers of stuff by dead white guys!
You can do it! Your story sounds remarkably similar to mine. Hated piano lessons in grade school and picked up the bass a few years ago at about 64 and been loving it ever since. Learn songs you like to listen to and watch Lee for inspiration (and wishing I’d picked up the bass 50 years ago). Enjoy the vibrations!
My first introduction to Toto was through the Falling in Between live DVD. I thought it was funny seeing Gandalf playing the bass, but I'm glad to have explored the music further.
I had the soundtrack to Doctor Doolittle - loved Anthony Newley. And seem to vaguely remember a Donnie Most album. You definitely have a deep catalogue to draw from, and we will be here.
Thank you for Your story. Toto is most important band for me. And Falling in between live is one of my favorite live performance ever seen. Missing Jeff and Mike...
You rock. It is great that you have a connection to fill in for Toto... I saw Toto first time at Caliornia Music Festival in 1980. Early TOTO rocked!! of course Mike.. he had a Al Capone hat.. looked so cool... I miss all of them.. Thank you for keeping their spirit alive after 50+ years.!! love you
Thanks for mentioning book stores. The historic City Lights bookstore in San Francisco is also at risk. I'd like to suggest to all of you, when you want to buy a book, call up your local store and ask them to order it for you. They can almost always get it in 48 hours or less.
Great fun to watch you play and listen to the broad range of artists you've played with over the years. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for encouraging us during these strange times.
Oh god....Barry Manilow? NOOoooooooo.......😉. So sorry to hear about the bookstore. You’re so right: Record Stores and Book Stores were my favorite places to hang....I miss them both. Barnes and Noble just isn’t the same thing. Thanks for being here for all of us, Lee. We appreciate you so much!
Thank you for bringing this gift today. I hope you enjoyed the yard work with the help of your two boys. Our local independent bookstore has kept it going with social media and leaving the books outside for pickup or they will mail to you. Our record store started a Go Fund Me some months ago to help with rent and payroll. Same with the many bars.
Hey Lee...one of my favorite UA-cam channels just quit today because of the 3%...3% of negative comments! Tragic to surrender to the scumbags...I hope you never surrender to the 3% Lee!
You're sounding real good today, lovely tone on that bass. One of the delights of this channel is getting turned on to new stuff, gotta admit Toto passed me by at the time, heard them on the radio a bunch but never really got invested in them. One good thing out of 2020 anyway. thanks again and keep well!
AWESOME - Killer playing !! I LOVE the sound of this Dingwall - The B string sounds like you have an octave pedal on it but I know you don`t. :-) :-) :-)
I was listening to an interview with the late, great Tom Dowd and he mentioned that you played bass on "I Don't Want To Talk About It" from Rod Stewart's Atlantic Crossing album. I would love to hear about that session!
Such an honor to hear and watch your videos. Theres many bass players doing bass cover of different songs, some of them are quite good, but you don't get the chance to see an absolute legend playing every day (well, now you can do it thanks to this channel). In my opinion, one of the best musisians alive.
Anthony Newley did a really excellent surreal TV programme in the early 60s, The Strange World Of Gurney Slade. It's on DVD, well worth finding. A number of ideas quite ahead of their time. It was shown ONCE, and that was it!
So sad the way record stores and great old book shops are disappearing, I still support both all the way, there's nothing quite like holding both books CDs and records in ones hands and digesting everything in front of you, so really looking forward to getting my paws on your upcoming tome.
By the way: I saw Mike Porcaro in one of his last shows at the Burg Clam in Upper Austria (restrict Perg] and there were the first signs of his disease (of later being diagnosed as ALS). Not that I noticed it, but TOTO (don’t remember who said it, I don’t think that it was Mike himself) said on stage that Mike had a problem with his arm/hand.
Well thank you very much Mr S! My appreciation of Toto since following your goodself on YT has come on leaps and bounds. Not merely holding the line and Rosanna in Africa. Great song choice. Toto is the most underrated band in modern music history. Thanks for making this Sunday complete.
I know, Right?
They’re not underrated they are a world famous band. This kind of comment is overrated and used frequently on UA-cam incorrectly.
@@Eleventhearlofmars Agree bro🤟
Amen to that
I would call the band Riot criminally underrated.
Fell in love with this song when i was first hearing Toto's catalogue beyond 'Hold the Line', 'Rosanna' and 'Africa'. Underrated song.
Very similar experience for me a few weeks ago. I too had only heard the hits when he played the live album. Instantly fell in love with this song!
My world goes on hold for 15 minutes everyday when I see Lee has uploaded a new video.
