I used this recipe for a spray baste on squares for a quilt as you go (fabric-batting-flannel). I used plastic over my counters, and will try towels next time. I decided after all squares were dry that I didn't like the quilt pattern and since I used very special fabric, I needed to save it. I sprayed all of the tops with water, let it soak in and was able to remove them from the batting. I dried out the batting and flannel backing pieces for use later. It's still a work in process, though I loved the spray. Like you, I've never used store-bought because of the toxic fumes and the cost.
I have made your recipe sooooo many times. It's saved me tons of money. Plus the drying time gives me a break from becoming too hyperfocused on my project and neglecting the dishes or laundry😂. I make qayg rag quilts soo my drying rack is the perfect place to lay my blocks or straps while the dry soo my cat master doesn't get onto them.
I just found this video and made my 1st batch of homemade spray baste. Can't wait to try it out
Watching from Muskoka ON(3 hrs north of Toronto). I’m ready to practise machine quilting for for my first-ever machine quilted quilt! I found your old post when searching UA-cam re spray basting. I custom imported your recipe into a recipe app, so I always have it avail. I’m also going to print your new PDF and post it on the inside of one of my kitchen doors. I’m choosing the vodka option-I’m going to use vanilla vodka. Yum! I think it should smell amazing! Thanks for the positive newsletters. I love your energy.💙
Pat Strawhouse Most flavored vodkas have added sugar that may alter the formula.
Karen Rossi Thanks for the tip-I hadn’t even thought of that. Would not want to add sugar! Checked Smirnoff Vanilla Vodka has no sugar. Whew! Dodged a bullet on that one! 💙
Your energy is beautiful sister! Great information and well presented. Very helpful. Thanks!!!
Thank you SO much!!! I have been following you for the last few years and you are amazing!! Thanks for the spray baste!
I can see why ironing to dry it would be a problem, but what about using a hair dryer?
Just made a batch, but can't get it to come out in a fine spray - only a stream :-( Should I add a bit more water? Use a specific type of bottle? I really want this to work so any suggestions would be helpful :-)
I love your energy and can’t wait to try this thank you.
Get on with it girl...
I love this method. I have faux wood floors that were easy to mop up after the quilt was removed. Our garage floor was just epoxied and now I am going to try basting my next big quilt out there. No rug to help with friction. Any suggestions?
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I'll try it out!
Will this keep all layers together for hand quilting?
Just watched your video. Wouldn't it be useless to add any scent to your spray since you wash it out anyway? Also, this recipe is for starch as well, so I guess it's for both. Thanks for the video.
Is this spray strong enough to use for machine embroidery use?
Sew wonderful, thanks for sharing!! 🧵❤️
Can I make this too thick? I think my “heaping tablespoons” were on the heavy side. Seriously...like wall paper paste...
Yes 👍 Sounds good
What happens to your sewing needles. Does the basting material gunk up the needles? Thanks
Not at all. The layers are stuck together without any gumminess.
@@terridean4784 thanks for answering, I am going to try it my next quilt...a zig zag
That's why you are to wait until it completely dries so your needle doesn't gum up.
Hi HollyAnne from the UK
From central Missouri!!!!
I do not like the way it flatten out’s the batting. but the glue it self works great!
The batting should fluff right back up when washed :-)
I'm worried the flour will eventually cake up and come through the fabric
You're supposed to wash it out.
"It's flour and vodka" 😂😂😂

Alcohol is very toxic too.
