With only 4 TV channels, producers took extra care producing the shows, creating memorable theme tunes, as they had a captive audience. We do not have that now
I remember Henry Kelly's habit of reminding the viewers at home every five minutes of the star prize that would await the "Pan-European Quiz Champion"; whether it be a trip to the 1988 Seoul Olympics or panning for gold in Queensland, accompanied by an instrumental version of the theme tune featuring what sounded like Phil Collins on drums at the start 😂😂😂
This reminds me of being of sick or teachers inset days,, always loved em,, knots landing used to be on afterwards too which was another great afternoon show
Marvelous. If you were off school it was Neighbours, then this shit, then there was a lull in the day's programming until the 'Broom Cupboard' came on, after which you would watch Neighbours again. Glory days! xx
When its 1995 you are 9 years old and your ill there's nothing better than watching a rubbish gameshow like this with such an ACE theme tune! It looked rubbish even then, but I loved watching it! As so many others did going off the comments!
omg. i remember this i was young very young at the time. my mum said that i used to dash in the living room when this programme started and i used to listen to it. good tune
So so crap and yet brilliant, probably more amazing than anything that has come before and after... the question is "Are you happy and ready to play?" I know I am "And why don't you come too"
This came up as a question on the chase. All i said to my friend was going for gold. Came on after neighbours. I remember watching that when i had a day of school, on holidays or was sick
"Baba Jolie guided messages" just named this theme-song in the Leo reading for August 2021 (posted July 29th 2021). this is amazing :) I was born in the exact same year, 1980 :)
LOL, oh man this takes me back. I used to see this when ever i was home from primary school.I never watched it to the end though- the amazing theme tune, and the (then) fancy computer graphics in the intro lured me in, but the show quickly bored me.
GFG did broadcast to Europe via the unsuccessful and financially troubled Super Channel, but after this was taken over by NBC in 1993, foreign contestants had to be sent tapes of their appearances on the show.
@ullapoolposse I remember faking an illness and taking the day off school. It was about 1991 and everything was going sweet until Going for Gold made an appearence on the tellybox. Five minutes into the programme, i decided to help myself to the whisky, vodka and green stuff in my dad's drinks cabinet. I got proper fucked. My 'then' girlfriend came over and found me slumped on the floor with puke coming out of my nose. I was taken to hospital and had my stomach pumped. I blame Henry Kelly.
This was the hardest fecking game every made. They NEVER got past the second sand box question thing. Used to watch this during summer hols off school lol. Christ I'm old
Put your hand up if you came to watch this quiz show video because you read on WIkipedia that the god father of hollywood movie soundtracks ' Hans Zimmer ' created this theme ? And yes, I am as shocked as you were to read it, but I guess everyones career has to start somewhere... Actually, I like this theme tune more than his Rain Man, Lion King, Gladiatior, Batman Begins, The Dark Kight, Pirates Of The Caribbean 1,2 and 3 and Inception themes ( just kidding lol ).
whenever I was off sick from school I just loved "going for gold"
Lol same here
giggle
Yesss! Same 😂
Loved this on my "sick" days too
Very true
Proof that everyone has to start somewhere, somehow, and we learn on the way. To Hans Zimmer!!
Hans Zimmer was doing other well known stuff before this jingle!
So what you on about?
Are you delirious? This wasn't some kind of lowly start. It is the best thing he ever did (amongst other great stuff).
Hans Zimmer’s greatest work.
lol even better than inception?
@@clouds4media496
Yes.
Yes it is.
Just his first.
They don’t make game shows like this anymore. Absolute classic, used to watch this on half term or off school if not feeling well
This is just an absolute classic. I used to watch this at dinner time when I had home dinners from school. Quality!
A tune that I first heard as a child stuck in the head for the rest of my life. A typical Zimmer piece
GOING FOR GOING FOR GLOLD
When Henry Kelly walks on you expect him to go "Aha!!!"
I love the way he walks onto the set
the heat is on - ah - the time is reet.
used to love this show.
Takes me back to my school years. Great theme.
Hans Zimmer composed the opening theme.
His finest work.
From this to The Dark Knight lol
@@TheVleckChannel HAHAHA totally
@@Pixeldog1 Hans said it paid for his house for many years lol
So many late 80s intros were just the best!
With only 4 TV channels, producers took extra care producing the shows, creating memorable theme tunes, as they had a captive audience. We do not have that now

I remeber watching this with my mum, my dad and my brother back in the late 80s
Watching Henry Kelly on pointless and for the last 30 mins this theme tune has been going round and round in my head.
Ha! I actually pretended to be ill one day because it was the finals. Fuck school, this is really what us 80's kids needed!
I only got to watch this when it was the school holidays or i was off ill, but it certainly brightened up my afternoons for a bit.

Best. Quiz. Show. Ever. Fact.

Gordon the Gopher
That would be awesome - the whole point of show was originally to win a grand prize of a trip to the Seoul Olympics in '88. :D
Sh!t gets real when this kicks in 👍
Ahh memories of either half term or Easter holidays. Oh and being sick off school
Just watched this on the telly. When Hans Zimmer's name appeared in the credits I was shocked to say the least.
I loved this quiz show. Used to watch it with my mum.

I was thinking I was probably the only one to watch this when I was off school with a broken leg lol
Every bloody word ! How is it I can sing it after all this damn time ?
I used to watch this on the Mitch from school down my mates house while smoking consulate cigarettes 😂😂 fond fond memories
Ah man I remember this show, it was like Eurovision Song Contest except it was a quiz lol.
i always remember back in primary school, coming home early suffering with swollen glands only to find this on lol
Barney
It was my favourite programme growing up in 80s
I remember the first series, 1988 i think as the overall prize was a trip to the Seoul Olympics. The winner, Daphne Fowler now on Eggheads!
I remember this show very well and that was all from watching it as a 4 year old.
classic :) grew up watching this and always enjoyed the catchy theme tune
omg. i remember this i was young very young at the time. my mum said that i used to dash in the living room when this programme started and i used to listen to it. good tune
I can't believe that I remember all the words from the opening theme!
Going for Gold, Supermarket Sweep, This Morning - All classic 'off sick from school' tele!
The theme tune sounds like a Eurovision song
So so crap and yet brilliant, probably more amazing than anything that has come before and after... the question is "Are you happy and ready to play?" I know I am "And why don't you come too"
Remember watching this with my Dad in holidays
This came up as a question on the chase. All i said to my friend was going for gold. Came on after neighbours. I remember watching that when i had a day of school, on holidays or was sick

People are running, everyone's crying..
Epic theme tune ;)
lols that is actually one of the funniest and truest comments ever posted on youtube.
Come on England!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Henry Kelly is muttering to himself as he walks on set!
this by the person behind Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy!
Henry Kelly would make a good Riddler, in appearance
i remember the theme to this and watchin it as well
Right in the Nostalgia
A day poorly off school was elevated by Going for Gold. "Pass or Play"
He is saying "I used to be a renowned journalist for the Irish Times and now I'm reduced to this crap!"
i didn't even know it had been revived. low key man.
This was composed by Hans Zimmer who co-wrote the score for The Dark Knight.
Shout out to the football ramble
I was born 26th of May 1977

Nope. Despite being a classic journey man I’m perhaps best known for my time at Bayern Munich
i loved the theme tune
I wish Hans Zimmer had stopped after this. He really peaked at this point.
Denmark has a serious serial killer vibe going on.
...Authorities found his victims locked in a custom built apartment built into his cellar...
There's definitely a dash of Batman in there.
Another classic by Hans Zimmer!
class.

Hans Zimmer, just wow...
i love that stage, and the awkwardness of the people at the start. plus when they used to have people on who couldnt speak english
And the first winner - Daphne Fowler - has gone on to be an Egghead in the BBC2 show 8-)
I can't believe this was written by Hans Zimmer
Why were there never any contestants from Italy, Spain, Greec etc?
Hanz Zimmer for you folks
I hope this to be the theme for the London Olympics. Everyone will hear it. Ja.
If would not be a surprise if you were unemployed because it was Thatcher who ran England in to the ground and unemployment was jolly high.

agreed five should have kept with the original format.
haha i love this theme! Henry Kelly rules!
I was five when I saw this, some of it is still familiar lol
Hans Zimmer composer of Gladiator and Inception made this. I'm sure theres a bit of genius in there somewhere.. if you listen really really hard!
That Scottish bloke appears to be taking a photograph with his eyes when the camera comes onto him.
I never knew Hans Zimmer wrote this!!
