I hope this doesn't intimidate any confident beginners Colleen. I tried to make this as straightforward as possible. As long as you can crochet evenly and use a tape measure, I think this is very doable.
I'm currently working on this pattern, Bonnie. I appreciate your generosity in sharing these video tutorials with us. You are a wonderful teacher, and your voice is so pleasant. Your tutorials have given me the confidence to try something a bit more challenging than the basic stitches. I tried starting the Kells Cabled Sweater from your Contemporary Celtic Crochet book, and I'm wondering if you'd ever consider doing a video tutorial for the Kells sweater. I get a little lost on written patterns.. If not, I'm wondering if you think the Hialeah Honey blanket would help me get the hang of the stitches in the Kells sweater. 68 year old, super slow crocheter in Birch Tree, Missouri and a huge Bonnie Bay Crochet fan. Blessings to you and your family, Evelyn.
I have crocheted many of your projects. I love your clear patterns and excellent tutorials. Compared to all of the other projects I have made, this is very easy. Nonetheless it makes a beautiful and comfortable sweater. I found one small issue as I was transitioning from one side of the neckline to the other. I was following the pattern stitch count for size small. So I only wattled 6 stitches in to the neckline. I found that after I chained 48 to connect to the other side, if I followed your pattern description, I was was one wattle stitch short on the next row. I have an odd number of wattle stitches from end to end (29). Size medium has 32 total. Instead of slip stitching to the other side, I had to add a wattle so that I would continue to have 29 wattle stitches. The math behind it is 6+6 wattle stitches on each side with 16 wattle in the middle. Only 28. Thought you might want to know. Or perhaps I misread something and you could help clarify. Anyway, love your work. Thank you!
Merci pour le tutoriel même si je ne comprends pas votre langue, vous regarder crocheter est très explicite !!! J'attends avec impatience la partie 2...
Eating breakfast while crocheting my sweater and watching you😀 I notice that the armhole markings on the ladies pattern decrease in body length (smallest 13" larger 12") yet the men's increases (19" smallest- 22.5" largest) Is this a typo I realise that larger needs larger arm holes. Hope this makes sense
I just checked and this seems to be correct. This is the distance from the bottom of the sweater (see diagram at back of pattern) to where the armhole begins. This allows for more room in the armhole for the larger sizes. The proportions for men's sweaters are longer both in length and armhole size than women's sizings, which is why those numbers vary as they do. I tried to follow the standard Craft Yarn Council's measurement chart, but please feel free to modify this to your personal preferences.
Hoping to make this sometime in the future. Thought I could fit it in between 2 afghans Im making... but the one Im on has a ton of complex stitches ... hardly a row I can breeze through. Trying to finish this one to start your Colorful Cables Throw Feb. 3.
I do have a couple of cardigan sweaters in this book: www.amazon.com/Media-Porter-Contemporary-Celtic-Crochet/dp/1440238618/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
BonnieBayCrochet Bonnie -would you consider doing a video? You make the directions come to life with your videos. I have done 2 of your throws with cables-I would never have tried them without the videos. Seeing and being able to rewind allows many of us to attempt patterns we would never attempt otherwise. Thanks again for all you have done for all of us. Phyllis
I love this stitch, I have never heard of it before. I'm allergic to wool so I can't use it but what would a worsted weight acrylic do? I love this sweater I love the coverage the waddle stitch makes, my granddaughter is at that very modest age and she doesn't like my other crocheted items because they show holes and God forbid someone might see her skin color! This pattern would solve that dilemma. Thank you for this awesome pattern
That's great Sandra! I used to use old-fashioned pins, but that didn't always turn out so well for my family members when finding any left behind the hard way. Glad you found an affordable alternative!
So sorry for the delay in responding Linda. (This didn't show up in my feed.) I personally think that the sc foundation will add more bulk than you will want for this design.
You are very free to choose whatever yarn you prefer Dianna. This yarn is 100% natural fibers, and yes, they do tend to be more expensive than cheaper acrylics. I have personally used cheaper acrylic yarn only to have my garment not hold up well (not to mention the non-breathable fabric being very uncomfortable to wear).
This will be my first chrocheted sweater I have been chrocheting since I was 7years old. Size 1x And what size hook and yarns I am allergic to wools. Can you use red heart ❤ yarns?
Ivon Galano Rodriguez yes, up to 3X, but can customize by following videos and pattern, I believe. When doing this you may need to be sure to purchase extra yarn if making it bigger.
I have another question, in the pattern it says "Yarn: You will need [13 (14, 16, 17, 19, 20) for women's sizes, I don't quite understand if that's actual women's sizes or number of skeins required.
This is for sizes [S (M, L, XL, 2X, 3X)]. I know these can become complicated to read. I recommend highlighting the number for the size you are making using a highlighter as you read through the pattern before starting.
@@BonnieBayCrochet Great thanks, it's cascade Pima, the colours are gorgeous. Can't wait to start this sweater, I will be making it a bit longer not quite tunic length.

You can use any yarn you would like Dorothy. Are you referring to the Lion Brand yarn that is the thinner weight? That may work very well! Just be sure to check gauge and measure often.
Bonnie, thank you so much for this detailed sweater tutorial. I love the stitch. It looks like you could wear our it without a shirt underneath. Your thoughts?
I agree Debra! I usually like to wear a thin undershirt for warmth, but also so I don't have to wash the sweater so often (helps to preserve the fibers).
I recognized the yarn immediately. Beautiful color choice and gorgeous sweater. Here I go!
Thank you!
Really? Your first crocheted sweaters? Lovely! And an excellent tutorial too. Of course you used the wattle stitch.😊
Thank you, Bonnie, for another easy to follow tutorial (and my first sweater)!!! Looking good! 🌞
Yay Chris! So glad this is working for you!😊❤️
This sweater is looking great. Thank you Bonnie for such a great clear tutorial on how to make part 1. Looking forward to part 2. God Bless.

I would recommend sticking with a DK weight yarn on this so that it doesn't come out too bulky. Acrylic or other blend should be fine Debbie!
@@BonnieBayCrochet thank you!
Please tell y you use 5mm hook for DK yarn,,,,,4mm gives crochet wear a dense fabric
You can use any size you need to make gauge for the yarn you are using.
Love the sweater! Going to try it. The knit clips are nice. Ive used the metal bendable hair clips...works good..dollar store find.

I like the sc foundation instead of chaining and then doing a row of sc-does it matter if I use the single crochet foundation stitch- thanks!
So sorry for the delay in responding Linda. (This didn't show up in my feed.) I personally think that the sc foundation will add more bulk than you will want for this design.
$6.29 for one 50 gram ball of yarn is way too expensive for most of us, especially when you tell us we need 14 skeins or more...that's nearly $90!

Absolutely Susan! I am using a DK (#3) weight yarn for this project.

Hello dear. Can the sweater be done in cotton for spring
I like it how many stich do you do for a size Medin
I am making the medium size in this video I believe.
Thank you my friend
Okay, medium size but you never responded as how many stitches you do for this medium size...it will nice if you mention the many stitches you use..
It looks like a great project. I am in the uk and would like the printed pattern. Is there a website where I can find it. Thanks
just found the link senior moment!
I just love it. THANK YOU for sharing. In the pattern I can find all sizes?
Ivon Galano Rodriguez yes, up to 3X, but can customize by following videos and pattern, I believe. When doing this you may need to be sure to purchase extra yarn if making it bigger.
@@BonnieBayCrochet I will buy the pattern. THANK YOU again from South Florida🌞🌞🌞🌞😍😍😍😍😍
Ivon Galano Rodriguez day hello to all my Hialeah friends for me! (My hometown)
@@BonnieBayCrochet I will do it 👍😄😄😄
I have never seen someone use thread to sew the sides. Is that preferred to the same yarn?
You can choose whichever you want Christine. I prefer thread because it minimizes the thickness of the seam. Yarn tends to produce a chunkier seam.
How do you clean the sweater with the wool in it?
Yes.
Can i costumize this to fit my 10 year old girl
Hi Bonnie, this sweater is very pretty!💞 I'm looking forward to attempt it as it will be the 1st sweater I've ever made. Wish me luck😁💝🌹🙏
I do wish you the best with this Liz. Just be careful to measure often, and don't be afraid to follow your instincts.

What other yarn do you recommend? Does it have to be dk? I would like to find a brand at my local store. Thanks!
Colleen Hart Farnham any DK weight or even a sport weight would work. Do be careful to check your gauge and the measurements you need carefully.

would a cotton Dk weight yarn be appropriate?
That should work well too!

Why not use the same yarn for joining?
I think I mentioned that you can do this for this project, but I like to use sewing thread to minimize the bulkiness of the seams.
