I agree the high pressure regulator is recommended to have but it will also work without a regulator. You can adjust the flow with the valve on the propane tank but as the pressure in the tank decreases you have to fiddle with the flow rate. The regulator holds the flow At a more constant rate.
Great video 😁 ive a triple burner gas Blacksmith forge and I have a high pressure regulator attached to the propane bottle but there is no pressure and it is making a gurgling poping noise how can I fix this problem
Just a random question, and most likely a dangerous one but why is a regulator needed? can you just go straight to the bottle nipple and only have the tank open a little?
Absolutely not too dangerous to try on this channel... as the unit becomes heat soaked and if there was a hiccup in the line it could back flash the line and boom you've just made the evening news... PLEASE SO NOT TRY THIS!
How high pressure must the high pressure reg be? Anything above 20 psi I can find is labeled 'high pressure'. Do you know if it's necessary to use a 0-40psi reg? Or can you get away with a 30, or 20 psi? Those are much less expensive than the others.
I was wondering the same myself. I've got a 20psi regulater. Been using it for a year in a melter with no issues-built mine as forced air. Recently torch kept going out in new melter then my blower took a shit. Now using Ventri I get that low pressure flame sigh. Need this working being on disability and trying to get something going to make $$ because Disability sux.
Mark my guess is your regulator has went bad.... I have a link to a fairly cheap regulator that I've been using for over 6 months with out any issues !
Sooo... Thanks for the info, and i like your burner design... But... I built my forge burner to duplicate a Plumbers Pot Burner i had borrowed from a friend- It did not have a Regulator at all, mine now does not either... Im sure its unsafe somehow, (even if the flame ran back up the hose, propane cant explode without oxygen, so im not worried about blowing up..) but for the years and dozens of tanks of LP ive ran through it ive never had a problem- so does a regulator do anything else for my benifit?
The regulator gives you a means to fine tune the flame of your burner. By messing with the pressure, choking the air intake, and varying the orifice size of your gas system, you can get different results. Changing the carbon/oxygen ratios inside the forge, or finding the sweet spot that gives you the best fuel efficiency, or the right temperature for what you need

Hey brother man. Building my first gas burner, watched this, realized my mistake, went to TSC and got a regulator up to 60psi for 22 bucks and a 5ft hose. Hooked it all up, put gas to it, and it came out stronger, but not jet like yours...more like an in between of the two. Cranked the valve all the way open and it didnt improve much...any advise? Hey brotherman, so I got a new tank filled. Fired it up, same problem. Thought to myself, maybe not enough air. Drilled four holes in the tee next to the mig tip. Got better, still not a torch. Realized that when I welded the 3/8 with cap and mig tip into the tee, I had pushed the cap all the way into the junction of the tee. On a whim, I cut the welds, pulled the 3/8 as far "out" as I could so the cap was against the "ceiling" of the tee and only the end of the Mig tip just barely extended into the opening of the 3/4 exit. Fired it up and presto! FIRE! I appreciate the input and without this video I would have been SOL. Thanks!
Hey Ezra, thanks for this and your other vid on making a forge burner. Question: could this burner be downsized to the next smaller pipe size? I ask be ask because my forge has a smaller chamber, about 5" round X 12" long. Thanks!

Are you running it off a 20lb propane tank? If so they have an internal regulator that will shut it off if too much is flowing out to prevent a huge leak it's a built in safety valve that you could be triggering because of the amount of flow.... hope this helps btw thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling!
I know this video is old, but I bought a single burner forge a while back and it isn’t able to get my steel to a good forging heat. I have to bash it as hard as I can for hours with minimal result. I was wondering would my forge get hot enough if I bought a high pressure regulator and used it instead of the stock regulator it came with?
Hey Ezra, have you ever considered a four burner where each one is 90 degrees around the furnace and cover all sides of the crucible equally? Overkill or advantageous? Paul
Would it be possible to make a video on how to ajust high pressure regulator. I have one and it keeps on shutting off after a few second on. I'm all new to this and loving it. Keep up the good work.
Just received my high pressure regulator from Amazon. I have the forge assembled and the burner is almost done. One thing I learned while sourcing the parts is that not all quarter inch ball valves are suited to use with gas. I ended up going to four different shops before finding someone with a pair of them in stock. Mine are Vermont American products. The manufacturer specifically states they are safe to use with propane. Maybe you should include this kind of information in an assembly video. I was warned by someone who knows more about gas lines than I do that using a ball valve not designed for propane is potentially very dangerous. His exact words were, "You are taking your life in your hands if you do."
@@StutleyConstable Switch those valves immediately to brass needle valves and you will be amazed at the improvements to your control, performance, and efficiency.
Yup made that mistake when I first built mine, thought I was using a high pressure regulator and took me forever to figure I was using the wrong regulator
I am having an issue with my high pressure regulator. It is acting like a low pressure regulator. Ever since I replaced my empty tank with a new full tank, it’s been giving me problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Could be the safety valve inside the tank itself if the pressure releases too fast it will shut off... Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
With high pressure gass and oxygen together, u can get to heats extreme enough to cut steel. Dial it down to low, and u got perfect temps to melt aluminium within a couple mins, or if putting the torch on it directly, within seconds. Generally you don't want it too hot though, cos u wanna melt the stuff in the crucible without destroying the forge with heats too extreme. Be careful with high pressure oxy gas burners.
I got my regulator but it still doesn’t act right to me I’m attempting to build a small knife forge out of a 5 gal propane tank but instead of running it sideways I put the burner through the top could that be a problem or am I just being overly careful
I made a propane forge burner without a regulator, it works good until it gets hot, then it starts to sputter alot. Will a hp regulator fix that and why?
what if I don't even use a regulator and go straight hose all the way to my burner that has a valve to open and close? what do you think to dangerous or it'll work?
Luis, way too dangerous to even entertain the idea as the burner heats up you have a chance of it coming back into the line and well then you've got serious problems! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!
@@AmericanPiddler Harbor freight sells a weed burner that plugs in without the use of a regulator. Personally I always thought the set up was questionable but seams there would be liability issues if that was the case.
@@AmericanPiddler ok... My high pressure regulator stops at 20. 😆 I have the kibow 0-20 psi high pressure regulator with guage from amazon. But with that said its been running good at around 13 psi once up to heat.

I built a 2 burner for a brick forge I made. Would really appreciate if I could FaceTime for some helpful tips I. The flame. Thank you and have a good one!
So when I hook every thing up and the ball valve is closed the pressure stays at 30 psi. But when I open the valve the pressure drops drastically. Does this mean the opening into the burner is too large would tapping a mig tip solve this.
The number of burners depends on the size of the forge not the size of the tank. The tank size will dictate how long it will last before empty based on the amount of burners and how the flow rate is set… thank you for watching! Keep on Piddling!

Roger Pena did you buy the one I recommend and left below I'm the description? I can show you how to adjust that one....
What size orifice were you using? And were you using the same size orifice on both regulators?

This is good information and I'm very glad I found it, but how for into the forge should the nozzle be inserted?
The burner should be tucked up inside the insulation if you put it in the forge the forge will melt it
Just received my high pressure regulator from Amazon.
How hot does the pipe tee get on the burner? I am wondering if I could use epoxy putty like Quicksteel instead of getting a friend to weld it for me.
All I can say is the design we used works! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
You may have some crap in your line that is stuck in your oriface
With high pressure gass and oxygen together, u can get to heats extreme enough to cut steel.
Dial it down to low, and u got perfect temps to melt aluminium within a couple mins, or if putting the torch on it directly, within seconds.
Generally you don't want it too hot though, cos u wanna melt the stuff in the crucible without destroying the forge with heats too extreme.
Be careful with high pressure oxy gas burners.
Thomas thanks for all the knowledge you have shared! Thank you for watching and contributing to the Piddler community!
how many psi are you pushing I am looking to purchase 0-30 psi regulator is that good for foundry
What psi do you run your regulator at for the 3/4" burner tube?
I am not sure what psi it is at? I do not have or run a pressure gauge! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Great info. I did not realize the difference the regulators made.
I got my regulator but it still doesn’t act right to me I’m attempting to build a small knife forge out of a 5 gal propane tank but instead of running it sideways I put the burner through the top could that be a problem or am I just being overly careful
Trent send me pictures of your build on Facebook or Instagram and I'll try and give ya a hand thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
Just randomly ran across this hack and am glad I watched it. Thank you mister, that was good info
Can I use a garden weed burner for a forge and if so, do I still need one of these high pressure regulators ?
I'm not sure that a weed burner will get it done and unless you are using a forced air type burner you have to have a high pressure regulator
Does this sort of burner work with butane? Or is propane a MUST?
have no idea? Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
I made a propane forge burner without a regulator, it works good until it gets hot, then it starts to sputter alot. Will a hp regulator fix that and why?
Does it matter what size propane tank you're using?
Wow I'm glad to look at that video... because just build my burner and same thing to low pressure gage!
Thank's for that importante tip 🤙
Thank you! I thought my set up was under performing and it definitely was.
Thanks mate, not many people cover this. Cheers from down under.
What's a good flow rate on the regulator in your experience?
Depends on your orifice size, altitude, and burner size.
He's right you know... Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
So would that mean could use a direct line from propane tank no regulator and use ball valve as adjustment
what if I don't even use a regulator and go straight hose all the way to my burner that has a valve to open and close? what do you think to dangerous or it'll work?
Luis, way too dangerous to even entertain the idea as the burner heats up you have a chance of it coming back into the line and well then you've got serious problems! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!
@@AmericanPiddler Harbor freight sells a weed burner that plugs in without the use of a regulator. Personally I always thought the set up was questionable but seams there would be liability issues if that was the case.
I'm not encouraging it period!
i think if you were to use a low pressure regulator you'll need to make it a forced air burner right?
Yes that is correct! Thanks for watching and stopping by! Hope ya subscribed Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
@@AmericanPiddler oh wow someone who replies to the comments of their viewers, nice :D and ya i subscribed :) ty for the informative vid
Do you have a video on how to make and parts list?
Yes I do!

What pressure is good?
I start it at like 20 and then all the way to 40 and back ot down after its up to heat
@@AmericanPiddler ok... My high pressure regulator stops at 20. 😆 I have the kibow 0-20 psi high pressure regulator with guage from amazon.
But with that said its been running good at around 13 psi once up to heat.
Shit man I'm REAL glad I tripped over this. I'm building one this week and NOBODY I've watched has said this.
Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
what if you dont use any regulator , just tank pressure ?
What if you blow yourself up....no you need a regulator! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
@@AmericanPiddler thanx for reply, i have a monster weed burner / blow torch straight to tank from harbor freight i guess its designed like that. thanx , woody.
Yes you have to use a mig tip! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
I did that and I am getting faster better heat but the pressure from the tank still drops slowly. Not sure why.
Is it because you are using the LP and losing pressure 🤷♂️ Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
Now your cooking with gas! LOL
CB's Greenhouse and Garden
ABSOLUTELY! Thanks for Watching hope you're staying warm!
Do you have to use a regulator?
yes ABSOLUTELY use a regulator! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
How many do you need for a 80 gallon propane tank? Or how do you know how many you need?
The number of burners depends on the size of the forge not the size of the tank. The tank size will dictate how long it will last before empty based on the amount of burners and how the flow rate is set… thank you for watching! Keep on Piddling!
My friend I watched every video you ever ever created and thank you
Thanks!
yo! am I on drugs? why in hell is your video so damn good?!
Too kind to me!
What camera are you using?! it looks 3d! LOL
Thanks for this! I wish I'd watched this video before I started trying get heat into my foundry. There's lots of videos on UA-cam about building burners but very few talk about the correct regulator. Greetings from England btw!
That is exactly why I created this video! I will ask that you please share it simply because it can save someone else from making the same mistake! Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
Low pressure good for CHICKEN ! Also if running large volume you may get Mr freezmizer on the valve. In winter its a beach.
Yes sir it can freeze up! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler

I had 20psi regulator, now I have a 60psi, just shoots giant flames, how can I get it to torch?? Please assist
Thanks for the gumball mister. I was about to learn the hard way.
That’s why we do it! Thanks for watching!
doesn't the setup also need a flashback resistor? I've never seen anyone using one
Yes Chris that would be an added safety measure that we would recommend... Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
Copper wool works well for that
That's a great idea Gary! Thanks for watching and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
How money worth of propane does it take to forge a weapon or sword
Depends on your price of propane but average 20 us dollars
I hope u had flashback arrestors on that when u used the low pressure one...
Thomas I did not but that is a very good point!
Low pressure works fine on a ribbon burner. Just build the right burner.
Or use the right regulator
@@AmericanPiddler I believe that the most cost efficient burner would be the right burner, and ribbon burners are more efficient the torch burners like yours. Up to 400% more efficient fyi
Glad to hear can you share a link to your build? Cause I would love to see it and also would love to create an episode building one then do a side by side comparison!
Thanks. I wouldnt have figured this out on my own.
Thanks for watching & keep on piddling #americanpiddler
The regulator that came from my manufacturer is gotta be low pressure it can’t make jet flames just like yours
thanks.
Does anyone have a link to a guage that would fit into the side if this regulator ?
I don't but can look for you!
Just wasted 30 minutes of my life trying to heat up a small metal bar. Thanks for telling me why!
Heck yeah glad it helped wish you would've seen it sooner! What burner did you build?
When I started I did the same mistake and actually waited until my brass melted. And when I went to pour, it solidified before exiting the crucible lol
Thank you! lol I almost made the mistake.
Follow the linknfor a regulator! Thanks for watch9ng sure appreciate the sub also!

My understanding is that the low pressure regulators only work with forced air induction so adding an air blower would work and it would increase efficiency.

I have a foundry but no matter what I do it won’t burn blue like a torch just big flames
solid advice sir. thank you much!
You use a low pressure regulator with forced air. It gives you the same burn as a high pressure using half the gas.
That's is another way for sure! Thanks for sharing and Keep on Piddling #americanpiddler
