Why You Should Use a Landing Net

  • Landing nets are invaluable tools in the sportfishing arena but often overlooked in bass fishing. Wired2fish’s Mitch Anderson shares several reasons why and how landing nets improve the fishing experience for both you and the fish (barring tournament restrictions).
The right landing reduces boat side losses, the risk of hook injury to the angler as well as being the safest landing method for the fish. Are you concerned about the inconvenience of hooks buried in the net? Don’t be - modern net materials such as rubber and coated mesh prevent snagging while preserving the protective slime on the fish.
Whether boat, kayak/canoe, wading or shore fishing, consider adding a net to your equipment list to land more fish while protecting both you and the prize.

Today, I successfully at the tail end of my fishing day, hooked and ALMOST landed, ALMOST caight a tilapia, and a pretty decently big sized one, at a nearby canal. The line with the last crappie hook and last 6# hook, snapped near the shore and the algae water was deep enough for that nice fish to just not only swim away, but also loose my last 6# hook and spring bobber. That just got me to Amazon to not only buy more 6# shank hooks and spring bobbers, but also this very net that would've made a big difference in my fishing day today and my feelings. I always thought of the possibility of losing a fishing while you're about to land it on the surface when the fight is almost over. But until now, I thought a landing net was no big deal.

My gosh, this is one of the most compassionate commentaries on catch and release I have ever watched. My biggest sorrow is to hurt a deeply hooked fish with difficult hook removal or keeping out of the water too long. I watched this video as a part of making a decision to get a landing net for my kayak fishing. I am sold on how the net will improve the handling, especially if I get a "lunker". Great message, here!

Thank you for talking about something that is very important and seldom understood by anglers. Not taking care of fish is simply lack of respect for the safety of the fish we enjoy fishing for and releasing. Most anglers need to learn how to use nets properly for their safety as much as the fish’s safety. Netting fish and then putting them on the boat floor is no better than boat flipping them. If you keep the fish in the net and in the water, it makes removing the hooks safer for fish and anglers. If you are using lures with treble hooks, it is plain stupid not using pliers or a hook removal tool. However, you see pro anglers doing it all the time. What you don’t see is all the injuries that happen pulling that stupid trick. The fish that suffer the most injuries are the largest ones. They are all kept out of the water the longest and that plainly causes many of them to die after being released. I hope you make more videos on how to properly land fish safely and release them.

Good stuff as always! A pike flung himself at me recently when I didn’t have him netted and sliced my finger, ending my day. I suppose it wasn’t too comfortable for him with me holding him on the side of the kayak with a gripper and digging around with a (small) pliers. I quickly invested in a longer pliers and a net.

every fisherman on earth, even if you don't fish often, should watch this no cap

Where I live boat flipping is rare but we're all about Walleye, Pike and Channel Cats and as you can imagine with the exception of SMALL pike or walleye boat flipping isn't an option so you have to net everything. And as far as tournament fishing is concerned Walleye Tournament Anglers have the same amount of time as a Bass Anglers. And Walleye Anglers net the fish so Bass Pros are full of it if they "think" they have to boat flip. Its nothing more than laziness, the old heads did it and pass it onto the younger generations.

Couldn't agree with you more. Another factor is boat flipping a fish puts pressure on the line which can lead to a breakoff. Lost lure and, more importantly, a fish with a bait pinned to their mouth. Chances of survival are usually very bleak.

Nets are critical. Haven't lost a fish boat-side since I got one. Great vid.

Also, if you have a long enough net, you can use as a live well on the side of the boat by standing on the handle. Less shock to the fish if holding for a little longer to get some pics with it.

Nicely Done ~ Been using a landing net & a Mat to lay it on for a while. There is NO down side to it - prevents the front deck of the Pro-V Bass from looking like a murder scene . .

I bought a net because I was tired of losing carp and other big fish at my feet or literally in my hands and haven't lost one since unless the hook itself just came out

Problem with a landing net though is they can split the fishes fins and cause fin or tail rot

It's kind of sad this needs to be said (but it does)
Way more people need to educate themselves on fish handling, another thing is people holding big/heavy fish by the jaws or gills, without supporting the body. If you plan on putting it back you need to make sure you're doing as little harm as possible while it's out of the water.

If it's in the best interest of the fish, and MLF claims to have the best interest of the fish in mind, why wouldn't MLF require a net? Not saying the video is wrong, just wondering if MLF prefers the drama of the boat flip over the safety of the fish (and the ability to assess a penalty)

flippin monsters is just bad. just use a net! If you get them that close why not land it safely for both the fish and the angler?

Do you like breaking jaws when you boat flip? probably not, use a net!

Lost to many trying to net them. Rather just boat flip them.

But you just put the fish on the carpet, so does the mean you don’t care too? You got some stupid example

    • @ajlambrecht995

The net keep it away from the carpet because of the thicknesses of the net

That doesn’t make any sense too because he just boat flipped the fish on to the carpet, you’re stupid lol
