9:03 A point of fact: The entirety of Long Valley IS the caldera; Mammoth Mountain is simply a dome complex that formed along the western rim of the caldera crater 50,000-100,000 years ago. Before the Long Valley Supervolcano erupted, much like the latest Yellowstone eruption 600,000 years ago, Long Valley didn't exist; it was a shield volcano, much like Medicine Lake volcano east of Shasta or Newberry volcano in Oregon. The caldera crater is 20 miles long and 11 miles wide, so this was a MASSIVE volcano _and_ a massive eruption.
3:23 To your right is the foot of the Bishop Tuff -- a pyroclastic flow of tephra and ignimbrite that raced over the SE lip of the Long Valley Caldera when it erupted 760,000 years ago. From here to Toms Place as you go up Sherwin Grade, you're driving on top of the tuff layer, which is 600 FEET thick in some places (!) The Owens River Gorge cuts through this 600 ft thick tuff layer and gives you an amazing close-up look at how the character of the tephra changes as you get deeper down toward the bottom -- from loose pumice on the surface to welded tuff that is harder than concrete at the bottom of the gorge.
Good one as usual: I was there in 2020 and can attest to the fact that there wasn't as much snow in June as there was in this video. I went up 395 three times on that Census trip: once to Mammoth, another to Bridgeport and then June Lake, and with our work done, went back to Mammoth Lakes and went to Minarets Vista; at 9260 feet, it's the highest I've ever been except in a plane, and you are high enough that your car radio will pick up Fresno radio stations!
Didn't have time on the way back to stop at Convict Lake, but good thing you showed it. Unlike your 2018 videos, there's no signs telling viewers which mountain is which: you may want to add those.
Back in the 70s when we owned our condo unit and cabin at Mammoth Lakes, that was the first thing I noticed was that we were picking up Fresno radio stations AND our strongest OTA TV signals came from San Francisco (line of sight was uninterrupted). This was pre-cable TV of course. Yeah, I'm older than dirt.
Thank you Kyle for the awesome trip videos. I've been so lucky to have spent a lot of time up in the Eastern Sierras in both Mammoth and June Lake. So many great memories!!!
The other junction is 101 and 199 just north of Crecent City.
Yes!
21:35 My mom painted as a hobby, and I still have one of her paintings of Convict Lake -- which pretty much is a mirror image of this spot in your video.
Love how you added a second camera angle to parts of the film. Great!
Bishop to the CA/NV border at Topaz Lake is the prettiest section of Hwy 395, by far.
Love these videos. Wonder if you could add a map overlay to show the locations ?
US101 & US199 is the answer to the question at the beginning
I really enjoyed your 2018 mini-series of this highway. Watching it- then & now, I always wondered when did Cal-Trans widened parts of it to a 4 lane divided highway. I know the highway wasn't originally built this way. But I can't find everything on when CalTrans widen it. They are also in the process of widen it in the Victorville area.
Can't wait to see more of your do over of this highway.
Early seventies it was widen. Sherwin grade
The Sherwin Grade is a long haul in a motorhome.
Worse than Conway Summit?
Should have drove it when it was one lane....lol
