@RGE_Music Not really. Housing is bad, healthcare is bad, we're hours away from any major city and we have earthquakes sometimes, with the occasional big shaker. The weather's not too bad though (it's raining right now), and there are a lot of things to do outdoors, in and around Eureka.
I live in southern coastal Oregon and used to drive this route all the way to the Napa Valley to visit my relatives 2 or 3 times a year for many years!! My favorite stretch of road is between The Avenue of the Giants all the way up to Crescent City. What a lovely drive. It took over 8 hours from my place to my Mom's. I sure miss doing this since everyone has moved away, there's no reason to anymore.
Great place to visit. Ft Humboldt, Humboldt Bay, Arcata, Samoa Cook House, Trinidad, Famers Landing. Great food, very nice people and some beautiful scenery. OH yes, Ferndale and Fortuna too. Rio Del, Scotia on and on.
I live in this area (I was born in Eureka in 1967). You passed by the exit (701) where my apartment complex is at around 7:53 in this video. I have always loved this area for its sheer beauty. Sadly, not all of the people are as nice as they used to be, but there are still plenty of wonderful people around here, and plenty of great places to visit.
@@Ging-Freecs King Salmon exit is 700 and I could use it or 701 if coming back from the south (i.e Fortuna or Ferdale). I use exit 701, because I usually go to Eureka for shopping and Dr. Appt.
Good one as usual, Kyle. Never been up there, but my Mom and Stepdad used to RV up there in summer before he passed away, so it's nice to see some of their old stomping grounds.
I quite liked music switch when freeway ends we enter the southern edge of Fortuna. Looking forward to the next installments - my trip north on US 101 a few years ago ended around Trinidad.
It's all part of the unique Pacific Northwest (western Oregon here) The forests, rivers and mountains are magnificent, the coast is unspoiled, majority of the towns and cities aren’t ugly and sprawling and the people are generous and down-to-earth.
Fortuna. Art Bell. C Crane. For as much as I ordered from C Crane for awhile there, this video is the first time I'm actually seeing what Fortuna, California looks like, even if it's from US 101.
Moved to Eureka at the end of '22 .... what an amazing Northern California coastal city .... but you'll have to deal with summer highs in 60's and low 70's 😁
oh hey I currently live in Humboldt County (Arcata)! Its a really beautiful and special area, I absolutely love it here. Definitely suggest it to anyone who hasn't gone
8:17 pretty much every freeway section of the 101 north of Marin County was built before 1970, when the environmental lobby starting flexing its muscle to impede public works projects.
I lived in Arcata for a while back in hmm, 1973? Hard to recall. I was rooming with a bunch of other kids, all students at either CR (College of the Redwoods) or Humbolt State College, which later became UC Humbolt. You didn't mention UC Humbolt when you listed the local colleges, did UC Humbolt later become CalPoly Humbolt?
Excellent video as always, Kyle. It's great to see the forests of Northern California. I really like the music behind your outro - you used it to brilliant effect in your video of Medicine Bow on Wyoming Highway 130: ua-cam.com/video/FIaq490FHtE/v-deo.html. I'm looking forward to the rest of 101 in California.
My haunting ground for many years, really loved the North Coast, especially between Eureka and Crescent City. Eureka was invaded by hispanic and Asian wannabe gang punks in the later 90's, snd made the nice mall unsafe.
Sitting here in Eureka and watching this while eating dinner lol. Always interesting to see where you live from someone else's perspective.
I'm considering Eureka. Would it be a good place to live?

@@McScootyKins I'm tired of big city life and the cost. Its draining and extremely unfulfilling. I might do a trip up
@@RGE_Music Come and visit, you might find it more to your liking if you see it in person. 😊

An apartment complex on the hill? That up past the Mexican place and the Grange?

crazy seeing the exit to my house lol this is a great video to show to my out of state friends
Great video Kyle.
This is part of California the average visitor never sees or even knows exists.
Thank you! And I couldn’t agree with you more!
and it should stay that way!

Thanks for tuning in, I appreciate it!
Great video. Would be cool to see side roads into some of the towns.

Wow sunny. Been there with damp low clouds most of the time. Gas only $5.60s lol. Like it there, though.
A sunny day is indeed rare in Eureka!
@@InterstateKyle Not during the summer, thankfully.
Fortuna was actually named for the Portuguese community. Same word.
I really wish you drove across the bridge and up 255, but that would have been a kind of weird detour to make.
The parts of US 101 that's at the Pacific Coast is a seek peak at how the highway will be like in Oregon & Washington- but as a 2 lane road.
US-101 north of Trinidad is definitely what the drive is like in Oregon and Washington that’s for sure
8:53 is the mall
I live close

it looks more scenic than I-5
It’s really a matter of preference. I like both personally

Eureka really does look like a nice place to visit. It reminds me of Monterey down on the central coast: history, culture, tourism... you name it.
it pleases me that people can see the wondrous place i live. do you live up here kyle?
