John Ross your dad needs a whole side channel, not like you haven't heard that before. He's a treasure, and shows where all of your knowledge came from.
It's so cool your Pop is ok with being on camera. What a wealth of knowledge. I've helped with a few manual transmissions, but automatics are still some sort of black magic for me. The fact that a bunch of ball bearings, some springs and a coupla pistons that look way too small to push a vehicle mystifies me. And unlike this particular GM model, some work and work and work and rarely fail. Amazing! Thanks for your time and a special thanks to your Pop for taking the time!!!!
Your dad is a throwback. He talks just like the older men I knew when I was a kid in the 80s - guys who were WW2 and Korean war vets. When men were men.
Men are still men. Do you not realize there are plenty of guys that are 30s-mid 40s that have seen combat in Afghanistan/Iraq//Iran over the past 20 years? Stop trying to condescend to those that didn't because the military has only ever encompassed 1-3% of our total population.
Same last name and it is like watching Bob Ross very knowledgeable and calm almost like the asmr stuff pop’s teaching transmission rebuild a nice little spring here and scotch bright that little burr lil grease over here 😂
Blimy that takes me back. I rebuilt my 700R4 in my 88 IROC-Z and put a B&M shift kit on it. I swear that thing shifted as fast as a modern DCT, it was snappy !. Here in the UK there was no resource or help to assist me with this box so i was on my own.
Finally the brains 🧠 of the operation is back! Cudos to Sr Ross! Should have his own channel for us old farts!💨 I can see where JR gets his ambition from!! 🤔👍🏻😇🫡🇺🇸
My 93 Buick Roadmaster Woody Wagon had the tow package with clutch fan and separate trans cooler, that trans was fantastic with no issues. The ones without the tow package died quickly. Temp control helps a ton, especially in Colorado thin mountain air
This was interesting to watch. Very cool to have your Pops with you. I couldn't stop watching this for some reason. Great information, even though I'd probably never use it, but I enjoyed it. God Bless 🙏
Hello from Oklahoma! My grandfather rebuilt transmissions for 40 yrs. Wish I learned how to build them before he passed. I’ve washed plenty of transmission parts growing up lol
I grew up in my dads trans shop in ElDorado Ks. I washed hundreds of cases and parts also. Starting out, remove and replace the units and do all the washing was my job. Watching this brought back a flood of memories. 700's and 200's were just starting to show up at that time.
Amazing how much he knows and how much information that a lot of people wouldn't even touch it also shows the really really good reason to have a four-speed in an old truck
I miss doing things like this with my Dad. There are a few things that is slowly becoming more and more lost to time and that’s experience, knowledge and know how.
Had an 84 camero that I bought in 97 when i was 17. Had a plugged cat that I cut out and fit in a glass pack. Eventually spun a bearing cause I think oil pump quite. Those only had the 305 so I pit in a 350 from some older 70s pickup. Didn't take long for that 700r4 to give out. Replaced it with a turbo 350. That was a fun car to beat on.
Mr John Ross Your father is truly made for tv and teaching. Your best vudeos are with him. Thank you so much for sharing yoir father with us. Happy new year to you and all your lived ones.
Used a stage 2 kit in the original 727 I stuffed into the Dart from transgo. I eventually broke it by driving it like I stole it for a year. Shifted at 5500 wot on the 318 in the Dart. It would punch the car sideways on dry pavement. I had a shop rebuild another core and put a stage 1 kit with no downshift at any speed and it wasn't as fun to drive but it still works. Saved me from myself that way. I might put one in the Nag1 5 speed in the 06 Charger RT I have now. You can get rebuild kits for them now as well.
Oh my. I bought a 1983 S10 4x4 short bed with that engine and trans in it, in the early 90’s. Transmission was cracked in half. I got a case and rebuilt it. Then the torque converter input stripped out! Replaced the converter. That was the junkiest, most crappy piece of Chevy truck I ever owned. They say never buy the first year of something… went on to replace rear end, front end, and on and on and on. Was a comfortable truck but was nothing but gutless and unreliable. Hard to work on too. Everything was crammed in too tightly in the small body.
Yeah, I would've sent this truck off to the crusher 20 years ago... the 4.3 is already a horrible engine, the 2.8 wouldn't last a week. Even worse that they gave it a custom valve body 😳
@@ts6141 Agreed! 2.8 was crap, I tried replacing mine back in the day with rebuilt and of course….still junk! 4.3 is legendary good and great with a turbo! Literally a sbc with 2 less cylinders!
I worked in a remanufacturing plant building those for GM. We built hundreds of those a day. I did that job for more than 10 years. Then I got promoted.
Great to your father on the channel again JR. My brother's 84 Z28 had the 700R4, decent transmission. My 95 Cadillac has the 4l60E, so far so good ,car only has 52k on it. Worst GM transmission was the TH200 3 speed and the best imo TH400.
Not gonna lie. I’m 17 seconds in and already liked the video because I saw your pops. He reminds me a lot of mine who I gotta go see next week so I know the video is gonna be fire!
I can tell you the POS 6.2L diesel would grenade a 700R4. Regularly. The planetary would absolutely explode. I had a brand new '82 Jimmy. First catastrophic failure was at 600 miles. Years later I snatched the 6.2 and 700R4 out and put in a built 350 with a T400. Problem (finally) solved.
Had an 82 Corvette with a first year 700R4. My trans guy had some of the same issues with parts that were weird and not in his books. We ended up throwing a later year case in it. Ive put many miles on 700R4/4l60. They arent great, but they cost way less to rebuild than the 10R80 I just paid for.....
I watched a guy that can tear down, assemble, and improve transmissions - Precision Transmissions. Here are his vids for the 700R4 4L60 Transmissions. ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=precision+transmissions+4l60+700r4 3 years ago 700R4 ua-cam.com/video/stryFoHKbz0/v-deo.html
I had a 83 chevy s-10 2.8 4wd pickup brand new in 83.I believe it was the first time chevy had an overdrive transmission...and it was terrible. When you were in 4th gear or overdrive out on the highway...everytime you stepped on the gas it would shift down to drive from overdrive. Then when you let off shift back to overdrive. It just seemed so ridiculous to have to be shifting all the freakin time on the highway cruising at 65 mph..I hated that transmission. It sounds like i had the 700r4.
If that was me and my dad he would have been yelling at me probably 10 minutes into the video. Oh well he is still a good dad just high on anxiety and low on patience.
Judging by the content of his shirt pocket, I can only imagine his pocket check routine every morning. Lol. Like someone else said before in the comments, he dates back to when men were men. Some may think the shop is a mess, buy I bet he knows exactly where everything is!
I love seeing episodes with your Dad!!! The things he knows is amazing. What a mentor
I can only imagine the side projects, spare parts and maybe-I’ll-use-it-someday-items your dad has squirreled away in that shop.
I guarantee there's a piece of "I'll use this someday" wood in there.
@@agrobison3386 I have dozens of those from a project I completed in 2007.
Oh, most certainly a PILE of such wood. You don’t just throw out a perfectly good piece of lumber.
I watched the whole thing. I wish I understood it. I love listening to people talk about subjects they know a lot about. Impressive.
John Ross your dad needs a whole side channel, not like you haven't heard that before. He's a treasure, and shows where all of your knowledge came from.

I never miss an episode that includes your Dad. I could listen to him explain and tell stories all day.
He should go on VinWiki

You need to add some ACES merch to your store.
Man. Your dad is a MD in transmissions.
In pretty much anything
You’re Dad is such a wealth of knowledge. The two of you seem to have a healthy father-son relationship.
Don’t call Monster Transmission for ANYTHING! 😂
Fascinating! I love watching experts who are also great teachers
JR should high- res scan those transmission rebuild guide pages for Ross so the pages could get printed if those are lost or damaged.

Your dad has forgotten more than all of us combined actually know. The man is a national treasure.
Dad videos are the best. So glad u are soaking up all that knowledge
Totally enjoy these videos with your dad!! What a wealth of knowledge!
Me: Knows next to nothing about transmissions
JR's Dad: Knows what the Engineer had for lunch March 12th 1982
That is very interesting watching Papa Ross rebuild that transmission. What hasn't he fixed over the years?
Only man with an IQ of 2000😂could listen to JR’s dad all day and the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, 2 very intelligent dudes!
geeze he didn't even yell at you once to hold the flashlight in the right place...great vid
I love when your dad is on. I got an extra 440t and an 4l60, plus a 4l60 HD
JR, what does your Dad not do?
Reminds me of a younger version of my grandfather. Jack of all trades, master of everything he puts his hands on.
we always learn something from your Dad... MERRY CHRISTMASS EVERYONE
That guy can fix anything!
The science of knowing old school technology. Practice of years of tear downs.
Yeah I'm going to need to borrow your dad for my 89 Scottsdale 700R4 rebuild. Thanks! :)

Wow, that transmission was ridonculoussss! But super interesting to watch you guys rebuild it.
