This is something you want to make sure you get absolutely everything right the first time, you don't want to find out something is not right when you have spent all the time and money rebuilding and reinstalling. awesome job to the max, thank you for showing how to do it.
A high number of the comments express concern over the presenter not pre soaking before re-assembly and a few other things. I really appreciated both videos and believe that he knows what he's doing and shows a lot of expertise. Astro van 1990 here thanks for the videos.
Im hoping he didn't pre soak just to have a clean environment for filming. Generally you want to soak your clutches so they are ready to go when you first fire it up
I used this video to help me rebuild my 700r4 last fall. I even upgraded from aluminum to steel pistons. Everything works great. The pump bolts had been stripped out previously and I had to helicoil them. I can only get 10 ft-lbs on them but they're holding fine. Thanks for you video.
I watched a lot of videos on the 700 r 4 but this video was the one that helped me the most on my pickup. I was able to rebuild mine an believe it or not it worked . Thanks for the help
Thank you very much. I was dreading this, worked on dodge A604 and Expedition, but never a Chevy. This will be the first time I can see what I am up against before I am into it.
Good job sir. My dad puts the 2nd gear OD band in the case with one side hanging out and slips the drum in without knocking the band out of place. Ive done it once successfully but hes got it down pat i guess he finds it easier. But its refreshing to see someone else do what im being taught so i can have multiple ways to go about things. Thanks for the video.
Much respect for you ; I'm blown away . Just today I've added some Lucas rubber conditioner for that 3 -4 piston in my 4l60 Hope ?? it helps . Thumbs up
People are intimidated by automatic transmissions, GM thought ahead and built them simple to rebuild, and comparatively cheaper than Corvette manuals including the T-56. If you take care of the common failure points like the sun shell, bands, clutches, and accumulators, you'll have a transmission that outlives the engine's piston rings. Some kits allow stacking on FIFTEEN clutches in a single clutch drum! Can't do that with a manual transmission, an aggressive clutch can easily break gear teeth!
In all the videos on assembly I have seen so far everyone seems to omit the seal between the input and output shafts. Am I missing something or is it just they don't mention it (i.e. do it but overlook mentioning it)? TIA
Guys this is a good video but please research what the load springs do that he left out then make your decision on using them or not. Thanks RynoMight Transmissions
I rebuilt my 1991 4L60 and did some upgrades and modifications. The transmission works but there seems to be a problem. Just before the car comes to a stop, I feel the transmission engage and "pulls" the car to a stop instead of only the brakes making the car stop. Anyone have this kind of experience? Any help in solving this problem would be appreciated. Thank you.
My dad was a transmission man for 27 years never ever ever put a transmission together without presoaking the clutches I stopped the video as soon as I seen you putting together dry clutches

don't want to pay 500 just to have a new torque converter in when i can possibly go another, smarter long term route. TH700R4 transmission 91 Chevy G20 Van 350
What the fuck is up with that red screen flash at 1:45? Damn near threw me into a seizure and i aint got epilepsy, please fix this asap....happened again at 5:35, i am not finishing this vid, will find a different vid pertaining to 700r4 rebuilds
I’m guessing this transmission is strictly for an educational purpose used seals and dry clutches Will never last in a car or truck if you’re teaching someone teach them correctly presoak use all new parts inspect gears planets sealing surfaces I’m glad not my transmission
This doesn't make any sense especially if the unit is completely disabled ! Why would you want to reinstall any used part , especially the seals ? This is how most transmission shops cut corners and tell the customer they have a fully rebuild when they only installed just what was absolutely needed just to get it out the door . Then comes the bill $$$$$ . If you want it done correctly you had better do it yourself. To many half ass parts changers in the transmission business today ! Then if something happens and it won't shift, the rebuilder says , sure bring it back and we'll take a look at it , just to get the unit back on the bench for another charge . The common excuse it " well after diagnosing your tranny we found something totally different that was damaged and we'll have to order this part ... Then another bill $$$$$ . Its a snowball effect . You caint trust anyone even if you've known the shop owner for many years . Its his half ass employees that's at fault.... Just stay the hell away from any rebuild shop and purchase a factory remanufactured unit !
Some used parts are completely OK to reuse. Generally you want to replace all the seals, but Planetary gearsets and drums are OK to reuse. Even some frictions are OK to reuse, like the engine brake band in a TH350, most people never use it, so it comes out looking new most of the time.
It would cost a couple thousand in parts alone to replace everything inside the case on this transmission with 100% new. Factory reman units only replace damaged hard parts, they do not replace everything inside the case.

@Mike Smith I bought two off of ebay and made one with a piece of pvc pipe and all-thread.
Yeah I couldn’t put thirty foot pounds on my bolts either but there holding fine

dude ur the best... my 700r4 exploded its rear planet and thanks to ur video i was able to do the rebuild ty so much man
Awesome video, resolution and editing is fantastic. Thanks!
Always pre soak your clutches and bands and replace the o rings on the pump bolts and silicone every one also just for good measure
Silicone the pump bolts? Doing a rebuild this weekend, trying to learn some of the tips and tricks for a smoother experience.
@@gagehansen9551 the kit should have washers for the bolts use a dab of sealer with them to prevent leaks from the bolts lot's of pressure on them
I mounted my press tool to bench and had a hole cot out of my build table. Works great
This is great. I don't think I can do it this well or maybe at all.
Awesome video you deserve more subs! I'm having my 700 rebuilt right now actually. Out of my 87 chevy pickup 4x4. Hopefully it comes back awesome!
He obviously has done this before! My eyes glazed over on the tear down part.
The clutch & steel stacking was satisfying to watch.. cant really explain why lol..
You make it look easy
he left out 2 parts on that input drum
Man you not gone run that transmission before pre soak???
Same here.
First transmission Builder I ever seen sitting down his feet and ankles must hurt
Any chance you could tell me where you got that spring cage compressor? It looks universal it would be nice to have for side work.
Did he ever tell where he got the spring compressor
When everything is all put together is the input drum supposed to have a little bit of play in it
Are you gonna put the seal and bearing in that drum before you put the input sprag in
Much respect for you ; I'm blown away . Just today I've added some Lucas rubber conditioner for that 3 -4 piston in my 4l60
Hope ?? it helps . Thumbs up
Great video! I feel like i can rebuild my 4l60 easily now.
Are u supposed to soak the clutches or did u just not show it because they looked like they were dry ?
What is the press called you used to get the snap rings? I'm going to need one

This guy here........i bet this guy rebuilds transmissions in his sleep! Lol
Doing it wrong.. lmao
I rebuilt my 1991 4L60 and did some upgrades and modifications. The transmission works but there seems to be a problem. Only shake twice.. anymore than that n you’re just playin with it
Only thing you missed was spring and rentinaer clips in the 3rd gear drum ?
And the input bearing and selective washef
Im stuck on 6:54 the anti clunk spring any vids on how to put it in ?
Concerning the pump gasket, can I use the 1982 type pump to case gasket if it's all I had or does it absolutely need the 1987
Good work
Well done, very direct instructions.
assembling transmissions that's nice too see, cause some guys just make teardowns videos and have a lot of subscribers 🙄 ???
why dry clutch pacs spill some fluid on the friction
excellent very instructive video
THANK YOU!!!!
Is this the same for 92 700r4 4x4
My dad was a transmission man for 27 years never ever ever put a transmission together without presoaking the clutches I stopped the video as soon as I seen you putting together dry clutches
Im hoping he just did dry clutches for a clean video
It’s a tutorial video
1:44 ... what was that. I think I saw Linda Blairs face there.
Should I soak the fiber clutches on fluid 1st? Thanks for the info in this video. Is helped me out hugely. I appreciate you, much respect
Of course you should soak them putting them together dry will make them glaze up
Yes, soak them. I have a feeling he assembled dry for a clean video.
Do you need to pre soak the clutches?
racebends yes you really do need to presoak the frictions because if you don't on the initial test you could burn out your new frictions
racebends p
Thats what i thought
Of course you're supposed to soak them
Yes, soak them.
I have a feeling he assembled this trans dry for a clean presentation.
What happens if you don't install the wave plate 6 minutes 22 seconds into your video. Don't think mine had one. Cant find it if it did
howd it go?
The clutch will come on hard/ firm
What rebuild kit did you use?
✋🏼Bearing on input drum was upside down....big face down small face up
Wrong! Small face next to seal.
Anybody know where to get the snap ring pliers at 8:08?
Pr15# snap on
what did u call the 2nd drum?
You supposed to soak the cluthes in trans fluid before installing
Yes
Of course you're supposed to soak them
Amigo estou precisando de uma Caixa de câmbio automático BAXA do Honda acorde 2001sedan baxa transmissão vc pode mi ajuda a encontrar ou vc tem uma pra mim vender obrigado
Maybe its just me but i didnt see the thrust bearings on input drum
Think it was upside down
The one under reverse drum the wide part of the bearing sits down
don't want to pay 500 just to have a new torque converter in when i can possibly go another, smarter long term route. TH700R4 transmission 91 Chevy G20 Van 350
I have the exact same van and I'm rebuilding my transmission. You can get a torque converter for less than that.
The low reverse drum? Huh? That's the reverse input drum.
That's what makes me laugh I've taught transmission rebuilding for GM and they would fire us if we did it this way
Can you still do it without that special tool
seen it get done
didnt presoak the clutches and snap ring over the anti clunk spring dogey as
I didn't see where the yellow plastic stator washer goes.
Oops!U didn't get that far yet. sorry
Dry clutches and an impact on the pump bolts. I would not let this guy touch my car.
All Parts at GM Powertrain are dry when installed. except the torque converter.
If anybody likes him touch anybody's car they're going to have problems
Great job, but that's a 7oo4r
Didn't wet the frictions?
That's why he doesn't know what he's doing.. lol
W O W
The central drum? smh.
And Body Valve???????? help!!! ahahahaha
He fitted 2 frictions wrongly in the 3-4 stack !
And what about checking end play ????? not important for some people I guess !

Wow but you got a lot of comebacks no new sealing Rings no new bushings come on
To fast got to slow it down if your trying to show how to do it

Sho Bud I was thinking the same thing, reused old seals too?🤔 I guess he will get to build it again in a couple months.
