Serbian entry: A young woman, in her 40s, mother of two, with an actual University degree (Architecture) gets on the stage, blows everyone's mind, all while fully dressed and just sitting and washing hands. Empress.
From the song start till the end, all eyes are on her. And on top of that performance her song carries incredibly strong message about overwhelming "health" information every woman reads in magazines, promoted by celebrities and impact on one's mental health. She replicates compulsive behavior of all humanity: "Be healthy, be healthy, be healthy, be healthy..." and in the song finale twists famous Latin proverb pointing to a conclusion: "When your body becomes healthy, what about your mental health?"
All those magazines bring readers in a state of "health" paranoia, while your mind becomes sick, sad, desperate and frightened. Truly a masterpiece.
Song has so many layers that you can analyze for hours, from reverse Latin start, to powerful Latin ending, all packed in perfect theatrical delivery. This song is simply beyond Eurovision. It belongs in a museum.
This is an excellent song analysis for those who don't immediately see the power of this song: ua-cam.com/video/k_dmF6xHN1w/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OverthinkingIt

The thing is that in fact she doesn't even twist the proverb. She twists the known part but actually brings the meaning back to the original, which is "we should pray that there's a healthy mind in a healthy body" in the original text where this comes from. Luke Ranieri from Polymathy reacted to this song and he mentioned it too. And in my Latin classes we were also told this proverb originated from a Latin satirical essay on how everyone's focused on their bodies being healthy and beautiful and those people don't really want to learn new things and grow spiritually. So really, 2 thousand years and humanity is in the same place again. Interesting

Konstrakta really brought something new and interesting. She is charismatic and strongly attracts attention. The words of the song are instructive and refer to today's trend of excessive and obsessive attention to external physical appearance while neglecting mental health. A healthy, nurtured body often contains a sad, desperate and frightened soul.

This woman is a legit musician, part of the local music scene in Serbia, not a Eurovision hussy. The fact that Serbia voted her indicates our resignation with the amateurism and lack of music substance exhibited at the contest. It's a social commentary, not only about today's society, but for the contest as well.

As it's been explained to me, Serbia has a national healthcare system, but artists are excluded for it. This resulted in one of Konstrakta's friends passing away of cancer without receiving any treatment. Among the messages of this song, one of them is a critique of that system. 'Boze Zdravlja' translates to 'God give us health'. This is followed by 'Nemam Knjizicu' which, IIRC, literally translates to 'I don't have the card', referring to the card required to access the health insurance system. Basically lining those two up as a 'God give us health, because the health care system won't' message.
But outside of that, I think there's also a message about the entanglement of beauty and health (Koja li je tajna zdrave kose meghan markle? - What could be the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair?), the uncertainty she faces when self-diagnosing ('Dark circles around eyes can point to liver problems'), the impact that stressing over health can have on mental health ('Summer days, my dog and I, we go for a walk, and that's it. It doesn't have to be more than that.' + the closing, latin chants translating to 'an ailing mind, sad soul, despairing mind, terrified mind in a healthy body') and the staging seems to lean into a message about deification of health, to the point of cult-like behaviour. ('U ime zdralvja' - All in the name of health)
The cohesiveness of the entire performance is what's been keeping my mind occupied in the run-up to this Eurovision, and reminds me somewhat of Latvia 2015. Every single part of it underlines the message and serves the theme. Even the hand-clapping rhythm, and the physical motion with which they clap their hands, is reminiscent of someone repeatedly beating you over the head (Figuratively) with a message, in this case: 'Biti Zdrava' - To be healthy.
It's art, and it's my number 1 for Eurovision 2022.

This song is about obsession with physical health, serbian health insurance struggles and overall mental health.
The washing of the hands reminds me of the italian phrase "lavarsene le mani come Ponzio Pilato" which translates as "washing your hands about it like Pontius Pilato did (with Jesus)". "It" is usually a situation/an issue you want to ignore: in this case it could be the struggle of some people that cannot have health insurance who are ignored by their own government (my interpretation).
Also using latin is genious: not only it is the language of medicine and science (health stuff), but also of religion. This emphasizes the "culty" flair give to the obsession with health, that we religiously chase.
Lastly, Konstrakta is clearly quoting serbian artist Marina Abramovich and her performative art mastery.
To conclude, your Honour, this should be at LEAST top 5 in the overall

We are not talking about the fight for health insurance in Serbia at all, because in Serbia everyone can have a health card with which they can be treated in all state clinics in Serbia. Wow thank you for this review, I liked it very much! Yup, one of the themes is the mental health! Thank you for pointing out the contrasting moments in terms of the composition, I had no idea about that and I find that really interesting! Btw, Konstrakta couldn't be more surprised that she won in Belgrade among other amazing Serbian singers. In my opinion this whole performance was just something authentic to her and her team. I have just started listening to her other songs, and there is a really unusual one - "Neam samana". The lyrics are what I adore there but I would really love to hear what a Music Teacher would have to say about its composition!

  • @MiudmonDice
    @MiudmonDice 2 роки тому +53

You're on to a lot of it. There's a lot of layered meaning to this.
First is society's obsession with the physical part of health, liver spots, Meghan Markles healthy hair, etc. While also forgetting about the mental health, a sick mind in a healthy body as it states.
Then it's the fact that Serbian artists are in a legal gray area and don't get healthcare because of a flaw in their system. Therefore artists DO have to obsess over their health, perhaps, again, to the point where their mental health takes a toll.

I have to point this out: the hypnotizing female backing vocals remind me of pagan/shamanic chants and their male counterparts sound more like gregorian chants. These contribute to the overall meaning of the song: a female artist without health insurance is left on her own to take care of herself. The only thing she can do is pray to God to give her health ("Bože zdravlja!") or rely on rituals such as obsessive handwashing etc. Or just trust her own heart that keeps beating without any help from her. Sadly, that is the most she can ask for or get from "the system": a beating heart. She might be ill but she is still alive. What else can be more important than that? What an irony. Some people say that the song has got the rhythm of a hearbeat - maybe the chorus is a rapid heartbeat? Dressed as a doctor/nurse, she has got carnations in her pocket which (among other things) symbolize protection, healing and health. This is not even ten percent of what I have seen, heard or read in this song.

She said in an interview that the "in corpore sano" line has also religious background. So probably the chants are remarking that.
I don't know about the rhythm being of the heart beat, since there is a range of healthy heart beats. But it can be that the doubled rhythmn simbolises a dramatic situation, but it can also be just done with the purpose of musical dynamics.

The meaning of the song is very deep: There are several messages:
    1. In the time of COVID everybody is brainwashed that they have to do this, that,to stay physically healthy…. And what about mental health after all that?
    2. She wears a medical uniform and washes her hands: this is how she describes medical person when someone without a health card comes for treatment ( they wash their hands of that person, it doesn’t exist)
    3. People who do not have free health care , and they do not have money , can die freely without a guilty conscience
    4. The people around her in back looks to me like rippers, just waiting for those who can’t afford treatment or they could be priests cause there is only left to pray when u can’t afford the treatment or health insurance
    5. The general opinion that one must be beautiful, and in order to be beautiful one must be physically healthy. No once cares about mental health anymore, which is also important
    6. She is also like a fortune teller looking at her hands trying to figure out why she is sick and what symptoms does she have cuz she can’t afford health care insurance
    7. Artists in Serbia don’t have Heath care insurance and her friend died of cancer because of that
    8. Obsession with a healthy body while the mind is desperate sick sad and frightened

Thank you for your video analysis, and respectful responses which some under this video lack in their comments. I had very similar reactons to you as well, and I understood the lyrics, both in Serbian and Latin. Your last message definitely hit the spot: she is singing about mental health. What we see on the outside as pretty may not translate to how we feel on the inside which really is more important for a healthy body and mind. Also, there are some interpretations on the government health system as well as those that believe in conspiracy theories. She is not a hypochondriac- washing hands is also symbolic of, perhaps, for us the only way to keep healthy as we cannot rely on getting help from the medical sources.

@@TheMuserResolute this is actually just 1/3 of the project called Triptych (Serbian: Triptih). This song was sent to the preselection in order to promote the whole project, not expecting or even wanting victory. Actually this particular part was chosen for rather mundane reason - it was the only one who has fit the 3 minute time limit. How cool is that?
Anyway, if you want to have more context, check out Triptih, it's worth the whole 13-ish minutes of your time. And make sure to turn on the subs - you might not be the lyrics guy, but in this case they are crucial for the full experience.
BTW, great analysis. Not because you like our entry, but because it's educated, informative in technical details (yet not boring) and goes far beyond me likes it. And you, thank goodness, DON'T YELL, like many others who seem mental. Good work.

"In corpore sano" is an expression from the ancient Latin language which means "In a healthy body". Throughout the song, the chorus and vocalist also quote other Latin expressions. It's a song about health, like the importance of hydratation to be healthy etc. Washing the hands reminds us of the pandemic COVID, doesn't it?
Konstrakta uses daily routine / ordinary subjects to create beautiful songs, such as "Chewing-gum" (Žvake)

Lyrics may seem a bit silly at first, they are actually dead serious. There are so many layers to the song and a lot of space for different interpretations:
The name of the song "In corpore sano" is in Latin and means "In a healthy body". It’s referring to the Latin saying "Mens sana in corpore sano" meaning "A healthy mind in a healthy body".
    - First: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty! That's what beauty magazines do/they create insecurities about your hair, skin, weight, etc., and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration"
    - Second: Konstrakta talks about how our skin and hair often signal some health issues, for example, liver and spleen problems. The reason she is thinking this is because she's worried about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check-up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance, this is so important because independent artists in Serbia don't have health insurance.
    - Third: Then we hear her saying how an artist must be healthy, a reference to Marina Abramovic’s (internationally known Serbian performance artist) performances called “Art must be pretty, an artist must be pretty” where she sits for hours combing her hair while repeating that cause she realized people focused a lot on her looks and her hair being messy and prioritized that over her art, and the reason she needs to be healthy is that she can't afford to get treatment.
    - Fourth: the "Autonomic nervous system" part talks about how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes how she walks her dog, on a beautiful summer day, her heart beats on its own, it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart hoping it won't fail her (if it does fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that), and that's why she prays to God, "God give us health".
    - Fifth: She then says "I DON'T HAVE THE HEALTH INSURANCE!" (Even with "free" health insurance we are still paying a lot for medications, fees, etc. We are always paying insurance through salaries, for both employed and unemployed, and if you don't have "free" health insurance, you are paying way more, which is a situation with independent artists in Serbia.)
    - Sixth: Phrase "Boze zdravlja"/"God grant us health". This is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. She then says, the artist (she) is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic because she is invisible to health care, they won't treat her!
    - Seventh: Now, last part, it's basically the old Latin saying: Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), except that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy, the soul inside is desperate, we are all obsessed with improving our health, we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements, but what about our mind?
Mens infirma in corpore sano - Weak mind in a healthy body
Animus tristis in corpore sano - A sad soul in a healthy body
Mens desperata in corpore sano - Desperate mind in a healthy body
Mens conterrita in corpore sano - A frightened mind in a healthy body
The endless chanting of the mantra about a healthy body is destroyed by enumerating the weaknesses of the mind and soul from which no health can be born. The final verse of the song "and what are we going to do now" is a jargon of common sense cold shower which was poured over the mass media propaganda about a healthy body without a healthy mind and soul, after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now?
    Now about the handwashing:
    1) She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands off" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixion of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, many people in the government or in positions are washing their hands off and can't help you because of the Law.
    2) People standing behind her can be priests that pray for her health and/or are getting ready for her to die.

Last year, for me, was the year of Ukraine and Go_a (and the lovely Kateryna Pavlenko) with their magnificent ""shum"".
This year, for me, is the year of Konstrakta.
I was hooked even before understanding the lyrics. This song is so incredibly powerful and I could immediately appreciate the constrast between Konstrakta's Sprechgesang and the pseudo-orthodox chanting of the choir. Besides, Konstrakta really has a presence to her that pierces the screen.
""In corpore sano"" is part of a trilogy called ""triptih"" which is available on UA-cam in the channel of Konstrakta's band, Zemlja Gruva. The three songs deal with relevant modern social issues and the video is integral to the meaning of the trilogy. When listening only to "In corpore sano", as we are bound to do, I feel it is much, much better to stick to this live performance because it is simpler and more effective.
The video of ""triptih"", though, has English subtitles and it is very well worth a good watch.
I doubt she will win, but she is certainly among my personal favourites, probably just below Italy.
I have no reason to think she won't put on a great performance at Eurovision and I hope she will get the recognition she deserves.

Those who are confused why is she talking about the spleen, think for a second: You open a random woman's magazine, what will you find in there? There'll be an article title "What's the secret of (enter random celebrity name) good healt?", followed by countless "health" advices, diets that are often claiming that your surface imperfections are coming from one of your organ's healthy. Sometimes it's the liver, sometimes your gut, and sometimes the spleen.
This song is absolutely brilliant. There are some claiming that a bit where she is saying that she doesn't have health insurance, and "others" can't follow her has an antivax vibe, but that's nonsense. That part in my opinion, really hits the spot, because after years of hearing countless health advices you become paranoid, and that song bit illustrates middle age paranoia. Someone is following you, countless targeted ads are recommending this and that, why can't you be left alone? That's really the point.
The ending in Latin is pretty clear: After following and adhering every advice you found, followed with paranoia to always be "germless" (hence the hand washing), you are now perfectly healthy. But what about you mental health?
So much depth in just 3 minutes. Truly a masterpiece.
PS: To understand even more from this song, listen to triptih. This song is the second of the three. First song talks about mediocre life, obsessed with labels and lifestyle people are following i.e study foreign language, know everything about remote places that you never visited and read a woman magazine where a famous actress is as ordinary as you, second song (this one) is about obsession with health and the final song is about "acting" to be a part of intellectual elite in the society, while actually you are just stuck deep in the comfort zone and your soul is just dying out.
