Soonest he said Russia did the attack as if it is defent i lost this. Why would he blow up a pipe he owns and controls. He can just stop the flow lol. The reast of the video is generic and everyone says it. LNG is not enough and pushing for green requires nuclear energy but also requires decades you have less than a month left. Supply through ships would not be enough. Current green methods would still face you few blackouts, like if the day has no sun and no wind it would reduce the supply.
Europe is not like WW2 they are woke too nowadays. So this cold winter would be too much.

I don't remember WW2 either, but I submit that Europe lived through much more terrifying (and colder) winters between 1939 and 1944.
There were less people to need natural gas, and we still were very reliant on coal and wood for heating back then.

most Europeans stock up on wood and burn it through winter only the "rich" get gas (in most cases)
Because its carbon neutral not dependant on a grid and a nz wood fire produces of 1.5gm per kg of fuel consumed. A l.e.b is 1.0g and uleb 0.5g. So yeah it's far far better than heat pumps and heating a.c.

Last winter the lowest temperature in the Netherlands was -8,7 C or 16 F. I cant even remember it ever going far lower. Warmth is a luxury here not a matter of survival. Just get an extra blanket

My arms and legs freeze below 19°C. So, heating is not a luxury in NL. Plus I have solar panels, an underground heatpump installation and triple glass windows. Why do I have to suffer through winter?

Russia wouldn't sabotage Nord stream. They would want to move as much gas as possible due to dwindling income. All they'd really have to do was just close the valve. Things would seem less suspicious as it would be a logical action as opposed to blowing up ones own infrastructure.
Had it been them the investigation would already be over.
Investigation is finished with a conclusion it wasn't Russia who blew it away... but they didn't want to tell who it was... The West is just total nonsense..

While most countries in EU will probably get through this winter without issues, we must remember that not all EU states are rich or barely need any heating for survival in winter.
Take a look at Baltic states. Winters sometimes are very cold and many people work here for around 500 euro a month and we know in current economy it is barely enough to buy food and pay bills. Survival cost is around 350 euro (only food and bills) for 1 person a month withOUT heating.
And with heating that price jumps up to 500 even before current situation. If you live alone you can manage but families where parents work for minimal salary will struggle a lot.
It's not great with the heating prices in the Baltics. But the average salary in all Baltic States is over 1000€ after the taxes.
@@assamass Average salary only indicates total amount of money earned by all people on average, not the amount that people earn individualy. On its own it doesn't adequately represent the situation.
In reality if you don't have highest education you probably won't find any job where salary is above 650 euro. And even doctors and teachers who earn a lot of money in other EU countries, only get around 750 euro in Latvia.
Not to mention pension for senior citizens in Latvia is 380-400 for most people, and disabled people only get up to 200 euro.
I just gave you few examples of massive groups of people that don't earn no where near 1000 euro a month. And yes I know pension is not salary, but it serves the same purpose - keeping people alive.
My point is that it is better to look at how much people earn in different age groups, education levels and field of work. It will paint way more accurate picture.

For us, we didn't have fall break instead they extended the winter break by 1 week so they wouldn't have to heat that much. There are reasons this might be worse or might be better and we will have to see.

How does it make ANY sense for Russia to sabotage their own pipeline when they could've just... shut it off...? Especially considering it was already clear that Europe was not gonna run out of gas at that point, they need this money to save their already collapsing economy, and they immediately started work to repair it. There's a lot of countries that could stand to gain from the sabotage, but Russia is not one of them.
The video is great but it fits better with the sentiment experienced a couple of months ago, since now most experts say the biggest problems are resolving, especially with nearly no western european country actually buying russian gas anymore for example germany is at 0GWh and to that european storage facilities are filled to around 96% which alone will be enough for a whole january but with norway, netherlands and belgium as suppliers and the LNG imports it will be easily enough for the whole winter when you also consider that gas consumption is already 20-30% lower compared to last year and some gas reduction action plans have not even started yet
I live in a well insulated apartment, so I’ll be fine in Denmark. I haven’t turned any heating on yet and the indoor temperature is still 23 C to 24 C all day long. I spent like $70 for heating from the start of May to the end of September, from district heating, and that was all for hot water use, and not for heating my apartment. My energy company expects me to use around $90 for heating from the start of October to the end of December, but I doubt that will be the case.

I live in Northen Europe's Finland and winters are really cold here. I know what is cold winter. Europe without energy and lights would be a big probelm. It's not easy here but we have firewoods because I live in Farm and Olkiluoto Ydinvoimala, that makes me feel better and it's safe to be with family at home. 😊
Yes but you have money unlike your neighbors bellow you. In Latvia I earn 500 euro month for full time job, and it costs 350 euro to survive (only food and bills) in summer. In winter surviving cost jumps up to 450-500 euro before current gas situation.
Yes it is a lot warmer in Latvia, but the issue is not that EU will have no gas. The issue is the price we will have to pay keep ourselves alive.

Europe have survived the little iceage, then every winter was far worse. When I was young every winter was far more colder then nowadays and we had only one heater in the whole house apart from the kitchenstove.
Mother made us a small bed by reducing the lenght, then you had a warmwaterbottle and three woolen blankets. It was warmband cosey. Great to wake up and look at the iceflowers on the window and blow a hole in it. We are just spoiled, you don’t need to warm your whole house or the bedrooms and certainly not to 23°C. A warm bathroom is nice. Not washing yourself in the winter in the kitchen is nice. But I have my washingmachine and dryer in the bathroom and on sunday I take a real bath after I have done the wash at reduced temperaturen and dried the sheets and towels, just on the lowest setting.It’s like a sauna then. On the other days I pop in and out the showers.
You can life comfortable and save energy 18 or 17° C is Ok and also healthier, because you burn fat and will loose weight, but you have to dress for it. More thin layers is better then 1 thick one. Best is for your health is no sweater, but that’s not everyones cup of tea. In theory your metabolism will adapt but then you will have to eat more and that could outbalance the energysavings.
Also keep yourself warm not the house. There are several ways to that.
Also when cooking you can save, rice, noodles, eggs don’t need to boil. Bring the water to the boil with a lid on the pan, turn off the heat and they will cook without boilling. The rest you can turn off the heat five minutes before. When deepfrying bring the oil on the heat, turn it off and fry. You have to experiment with temperature and time. Eggs and bacon fry the bacon, without grease off course, turn the heat of and fry the eggs in the restheat. Everyone can try different things experiment.
Nah too much to think about just to keep myself warm. I’d rather burn more energy to waste then use no energy so the rich can profit from me not using it.

In January 1967, there was a high temperature of 65 degrees (very warm for winter), then the temperature dropped drastically and the next day and a half had a record setting blizzard which dumped 23 inches of snow. So the scenario is not out of the question.

Here in the UK, I live on a boat, have gas to see me through til next year and have a diesel heater if needed and 250L of fuel in the tank, I lived on the road for near on 30 years and the last 5 on the water, I think I can survive this energy crisis.

There are plenty of full LNG tankers waiting off the coast of Spain and Portugal. What is most needed is larger pipeline capacity to move this gas from Spain across to France and Germany and the rest of Europe.

this is pretty much being debunked by recent developments. gas prices have come way down from their peaks and European gas storage is over 90% full.

Yeah because demand is low, once demand starts to go up with the winter you'll see the full effects. People saying "inflation and lack of gas is actually good for you" are in for a big surprise.
Meanwhile in reality, September and October have been ridiculously mild, leading to reduced gas usage for heating and Europe's gas storage facilities are 11% fuller than even the most positive estimates have predicted, which now amounts to 94% of the total storage capacity being utilized.
The gas prices are also slowly coming down and have fallen under 10ct/KWh for the first time in a good while…
With these positive developments and in consideration of all the new LNG terminals that are rapidly being built right now, I'm not overly worried.
As for 2023 - it will cost the countries a truck load of tax payer money (one of the rare occasions where it's actually being used for public benefit), but the shift to alternative energy sources, aswell as substituting for Russian gas via other means is definitely doable.
Besides, without a pressing need, the switch to renewable sources of energy, wouldn't have been able to meet its target timeframe anyways, due to politicians making empty promises 95% of the time when there is not an actual emergency or serious time constraints that could endanger their carreer…
Since the whole world is in kind of a recession right now, making new debt isn't that bad either - because everyone is. The only thing that could become very dangerous in that regard is making new debt way out of proportion to other economic zones.

@@neko_my_cat I'm with you and there are many people who are intensely burdened by the current economical situation.
IMO how wages developed during the last few decades is an absolute farce, since these were always increased below the rate of inflation in most of Europe, leading to an effective YOY loss(!) in spending power.
(i.e. before the 90s, one household income could buy a house without taking a loan; nowadays, two such incomes plus a loan are barely enough anymore or just completely out of reach in many people's circumstances of living)
Add an acute crisis to that, and you get the current situation, which not only worsened the problem, but also revealed the cumulative effects of things declining for a good while now.
Possible reasons for this would be political failure/misgovernment, and new systemic issues being created, while worsening existing ones due to deregulation, lobbying and unfavorable changes in rules and laws.
Some of those changes were directly against the interests of the average working class person and involve reducing their protection against exploitation and cutting down the welfare state, which was supposed to provide a security net and avoid existential dread by not letting the living conditions drop below a certain threshold, aswell as make sure that financial issues don't dictate one's life if he's already living in comparatively humble conditions.
Most social and societal achievements of the last century were fought for very hard and a lot of people had to be mobilized and motivated to stand up for that cause.
I highly recommend organizing regular, peaceful demonstrations and even creating a citizens' movement in order to create political pressure. Getting more people to join the workers' unions would be helpful aswell.
What could also be interesting, is looking into the core goals and their reasoning in the philosophy behind socialism or social democracy, because those are what inspired the aforementioned (and now unfortunately gutted) achievements in the first place.
People saying things like "but then it will be like in Venezuela, the Sovjet Union or China and you won't be allowed to own anything" don't have a clue and bring up such false deadbeat arguments in order to prevent any serious amount of thinking or discussion coming up regarding this topic.
I.e. socialism doesn't actually demand a centralist autoritarian/dictatorship government, nor a planned economy.
Having the workers own the means of production in equal shares (democratic workplace structure! no more ridiculously big wages for only the company leadership, more for everyone else), aswell as making sure that the state provides all basic necessities (food, water, medical care, education, housing) for those who otherwise wouldn't have access to them are the most important core goals.
Not only does it acknowledge many of the structural issues we're being subjected to, but it also proposes solutions by adressing their causes in a calculated way - those things are something that happens only seldomly, if at all in modern politics anymore, but need to return…

Reporting from Finland:
I guess It wasn't that terrifying after all. Here in Finland we collectively lowered room temperatures and tried to save electric as much as we person could. My electric agreement was from september 2021 so I had reasonably priced electric at 5,19c/kWh and about 10-15€ electric bill monthly. That being said market price for electricity was really high and some had tp pay really high priced for electric. There was also occational blackouts. I personally experienced 15min blackout that was caused by some error at power plant or something. It felt really weird that all of sudden all electrics just went out but it was also so cool to look at dark part of city and we just continued to play board games with candle light. That was actually some of the best memories from last winter 😄❤️

I live in Slovakia and my father have pretty nice solution for our gas problem. We have a lot of wood and a system that would take the temperature from burning wood in our basement into our radiators. Worse situation its for people that lives in Apartments.

I heard that it's actually supposed to be a fairly warm winter this year. Yes it will cold in the sense that their will be a shortage of gas this year but if the weather stays warmer than normal that will really be detremental to Russia as the price of gas will go down. I think in France the last 2wks of October were well above the norm as s hotter autumn. The jet stream is supposed to bring warmrer weather to Europe this winter we will see what happens. I hope this is true as it will save lives in Europe and save families money and be a huge slap in the face to Putler!!

There were far worse winters before gas was even a comodity but those winters weren't documented. We're just too comfortable for our own good.

Saying that Russia sabotaged their own nord stream pipeline is ridiculous. Why would they do that when they have already shut down gas transfer prior to the sabotage. In my opinion whoever did this just wanted to make sure that Germany would not even think about cutting a deal with Russian in exchange for Gas.
Absolutely, the silence of the German government speaks volumes. And the pressure from the public to open NS 2 magically disappeared.
It wouldn't be more frosty and snowy than in Poland 1978/79.
Update on the LNG import capacity:
The first German dock has been finished one and a half months early and is now in service
I mean, it's not really a problem for Germany. Just use the tried and true method, the black gold, coal. It's just the climate activists you have watch out for. This all could've been prevented if they followed France and maintained their nuclear power plants. The funny thing is that nuclear energy is cleaner than most energy sources in the long run, and even cleaner energy (geothermal energy) is basically just nuclear energy from the Earth's core, that doesn't rely on seasonal or variable fluctuations.

11:37 Bansko, Bulgaria in winter. BTW, Russia cut off gas to Poland and Bulgaria much earlier than it did to Germany, on Apr 26, for refusing to pay in roubles. Up until then, both countries were heavily reliant on Russian gas (over 90% of all gas use in Bulgaria's case), yet both have managed to switch to other sources since then.

With global warming causing an unusually warmer fall (currently in the 50s and 60s °F), a cold winter isn't necessarily causing much anxiety among most of us living in Europe.

Sweden supply a lot of electricity to Germany and Poland, but that drives up the prices a lot in both Germany and Sweden so we Swedes are not so happy about it. We produces more than we need but the price keeps rising
Thats because its not a lack of gas that rises prices. Its corporate greed. Energy companies are making record profits.
The electricity market in Europe is so messed up. We produce not enough so we import driving prices up meanwhile we still operate gigantic coal powerplants because Nuclear Energy is "scary" and it will take until 2100 for us to actually build one.

A pretty good summery of the current situation. If you factor in that one LNG tanker costs $450000 per day and it is in general 8 times to 10 times more than the previous Russian pipeline gas, than it makes it clear it is no long term solution for Europe. It might work for a year or two, after that the cost will break those nations.
My man, I don't know where you live, but there are 20 degrees outside until the 15th of November. I usually turn on my central heating in the middle of October... we already reduced our gas consumption by more than 15%, since we have a month without heating...

The EU needs to shift to REs rapidly to be energy independent, so it won’t have to make decisions with problematic countries.
Germany previously relied on a mixture of coal and nuclear to supply base load energy. Decisions were made to transition the German grid away from nuclear towards LNG over a number of years by politicians who ended up working for or on the pay-roll of Russian Gas companies. I watch with glee as the German establishment try to pretend they haven't been taking dirty Russian gas money on the downlow for decades now.

what if this is going to be a warm winter? there are animal and plant signals for that in asia. snakes, especially pythons are still wondering, refuse to go hybrid. trees that suppose to bloom in spring already have flowers, while trees suppose to yellow their leaves don't. typhoon is a summer thing here, but we have one next week in november. one signal can be false alarm, multiple signals shall not be ignore. don't know about europe, but asia seems to have a warm winter.
The thing is. The coldest part of European winters has consistently been pushed further back in the season. Having other comparably warm decembers, but then snapping into true cold weather in january and february.
@@RK-cj4octhis is an issue didn't happen here for the last couple years, you can consider today is november, but temperature here is still 27 degree c, one of the reason is underwater volcanic activities near taiwan and japan kind of "cooking" the sea, float stones already trouble fishing fleets here and neighbor countries for few years.

JFYI - 7:51 this is a Kyiv Cogeneration Power Plant #6, it was hit (not critical) by russian rocket bombardment recently.
Its also the biggest thing that will kill factories and the entire transport sector.
there is way to little talk about intense ramp up of solar and wind energy production. after years and years of cheap gas we start to talk about nuclear instead of the much cheaper and better alternative. its very frustrating
ikr! Australia is now on the road to becoming a renewables powerhouse and decoupling it's major export of coal and gas to clean sources. I was shocked how France decided to 180° on the road towards clean energy, but I guess when the US sanctions whoever they don't like the west follows close by.

They have. This is just doomsday fearmongering. Here in Bulgaria at the moment the temperature is 25C and our gas storages are almost full. And the meteorologist say that this will be the warmes winter in years.

Once I heard a french saying the time he felt more cold was in Brazil, cause of the lower temperatures of south Brazil and here we don't have house heating... It is not the end of the world for europeans, its just a too -expensive-to-be-heated-all-the-time winter. Buy a thick duvet and you will be fine.

Bold statement, but I'm always hot even in winter I sleep with windows open. Isn't it also a bit getting used to cold... Also going to gym 4-6 days a week really ups your body temprature. If I don't sport for a week I'm much more cold. So time to get in shape people 😁
Which country are you from? Because I doubt keeping in shape is gonna be enough to deal with the cold in northern Europe.

The crisis will be over after the Ukraine war because they'll provide the EU with gas.
