    Follow Up Video that I’ve made since first posting this: • TRUSTED HOUSESITTERS: ...
    Maren makes it… possible to find a house-sitting or pet-sitting job.
    This week I’ll be telling you guys my experience with the app Trusted Housesitters. This app allows me to find house and pet sitting stays, apply to them, and book them all with a third party involved.
    I’ll tell you guys about how to sign up, how to search for house sitting jobs and how to apply. I’ll also show you guys how it works on my end as a pet-sitter.
    By lining up multiple of these house sitting jobs and choosing those that are more long term, I’ve been able to avoid paying rent for about 6 months and househack this way by not paying rent. I do have a storage unit to store the bigger things, but the rent I pay on that is far cheaper than what I would pay living anywhere for rent.
    Join TrustedHouseistters here with a 25% discount - use code MAREN25

    be aware that THS have a "tamper-proof" review process. That means if someone writes something false about you but you can't prove that what they say is untrue e.g. "they made our cat sick" or "they broke our door" you will not be able to get this removed no matter what you do. This happened to us and the experience was so horrendous and we were treated so badly by THS that we had to pull off the site. House sitting is like hitch hiking... it's the best thing in the world, until it goes wrong through no fault of your own and then it's a complete nightmare. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it (I love both house sitting and hitch hiking). It just means that you should go into it with your eyes wide open. THS has hosts as their priority, not sitters. Be aware that they will hang you out to dry if your hosts takes a dislike to you for whatever reason.

      Hi Leonard, thanks so much for sharing your story. This sounds like such a frustrating experience!!! I haven’t had a bad review, but I do live in fear of that happening because I didn’t know what would happen if I got one. It is unfortunate to hear that there is no way for you to respond to the review (for example the way a business can respond back on google reviews or on Etsy) to make a comment on what was said in the review publicly. That would at least be a compromise between not being able to get it removed and having to leave the site entirely.
      I really like the analogy about hitchhiking!! Very great comparison.

      You can, and should, review the host as well. I've done 15 sits and had one bad experience. I posted a calm, but honest response on the bad host both to protect my reputation but also to warn other future sitters. I've had many sits since then. People are smart enough to see that the host was the problem if there's one bad review out of many good ones.

    What I got from your video that was particularly useful is the premium membership insurance component. I hadn't thought of that! What if the dog you're sitting for bites a kid and you get sued? What if somebody cancels and you're stranded in some strange city or even country with no place to stay . With the they'll give you money to live somewhere while you're coping with that. Very interesting! Very informative thank you so much!

      Exactly! Paying that extra amount towards the premium membership can save you A LOT of headache and expense down the line if things don't go as planned. I actually have (since making this original video) had to use the "Sit-Cancellation Insurance" and it worked! I ended up having a hotel paid for for the entire rest of the time the housesit was supposed to be because of how last minute this change was. I was so grateful to have it then! You hope you never need it, but if something does happen... it's a gamechanger.

    Some house sits on trusted house sitters and Housecarers are not as “advertised”. Just walked into a situation with no written instructions on pet care or emergency vet. Spent a day cleaning to make liveable for length of stay.😩.
    Lesson learned= learn to better interview folks “using” your services. First one with undesirable level of cleanliness. Have also been cancelled on after driving several hundred miles. I now have a cancellation fee to cover travel expenses.

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi, I’m so sorry you’ve had these bad experiences!! Those sound awful. I fully agree that it’s so important to interview people thoroughly up front to make sure it’s going to be a good situation for you. It’s not just them interviewing you, but also you interviewing them.
      I have a whole separate video on the steps you should take while applying for exactly that reason: ua-cam.com/video/j9H843fGs-c/v-deo.htmlsi=mLz68JV_eWVi4i2q
      Also may I ask what kind of membership plan you picked to have as a petsitter? If you pick the premium sitter option, you have “cancellation insurance” for this type of situation. I got reimbursement for a hotel for 9 nights when someone canceled on me at the last minute by Trusted Housesitters sit cancellation insurance… the premium membership really paid for itself quickly when that happened…

    I'm also just starting to look into this in the Denver area. I'm looking now for house-sits starting in June 2023 when my lease is up, but I'm not finding much. There are several for the next month or two. Do you find that more people list closer to the dates they need a sitter than further out? I like to plan ahead. Thanks a lot for your video, discount code and great advice!

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  2 роки тому +6

      Hi Marie, sorry I missed your comment earlier!! yea I can pretty much only look about a month up at a time. Maybe 6 weeks. Occasionally people post things way in advance but usually those get snatched up pretty quickly, so checking all the time or turning on alerts for sits in the location helps too (although they don’t always work which I’m not sure if that is the app or my phone). For the most part you’re kind of flying by the seat of your pants doing this not going to lie, so if you like to plan, maybe not the best idea. Maybe just better to find a good deal on rent or look into Roomates if you want to save money. Sometimes I don’t know where I’ll be staying when it’s only a week away… and then something comes through. Other times I’ve taken sits that overlap a day or two and then go back and forth on those days to check on the pets because I’d rather have 2 things than 0 things if it gets me a few more weeks after those days. Having friends who’s couch you can crash on or sleeping in your car or camping in summer to bridge a night here or there helps too. There’s also hostels in Denver that are relatively cheap or “hostel” type stays on Air BnB. Hope this helps! Happy new year & thanks for watching !

    Just one question that
    We have to stay in the house or if we are working we can go to work ?

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  7 місяців тому +2

      You can go to work. I don’t think any homeowner could reasonably expect you to be there 24/7 and never leave. Many of these homeowners themselves leave during the day if they were home and working, so their pets are used to being left alone for the workday.
      I guess the only reason why you couldn’t work outside the house is if you agree to take care of an animal (like a puppy) that can’t be left alone for that many hours, but that is also something you could absolutely choose not to do. The responsibilities for the pets are listed in the homeowners’ listings, so you can absolutely see this upfront or send them a message to ask.

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  2 роки тому

      Hi Igor, the only app I have ever gone through for longer term sits is THS so that’s the only one I can really give my experience on. I’ve actually also gone through Rover as I know it’s very widely used, but usually much more short term in my experience.
      The other option on THS is to expand your search radius or to take multiple shorter sits to bridge you over to a longer one if you secure something long but it’s still a bit away. Neither is ideal, but it does help give you more options. Also checking the app more frequently has helped me especially since some times of year and some locations are definitely more competitive than others. I found a huge seasonal change between summer/winter.
      Besides THS, I have found housesits in other ways though. Mostly through word of mouth by telling people I was meeting what I was doing and then them recommending me to their friends. Also while I was doing a housesit, I would oftentimes meet the neighbors especially out walking dogs and then I would ask them to keep me in mind for their future travels or if they knew anyone who needed a long term housesitter and just give them my contact info. That worked well for me.
      As far as I know the code still works! But let me know if it for some reason doesn’t and I’ll see if there’s an updated one I can give you.
      Hope this helps & if you find any other apps that work for you, leave them here in the comments as I bet others watching this video might find this helpful too! Have an awesome day & thanks again for watching!

Additionally, I agree with you that increasing rents is forcing people to get more creative and look into other options… which I also totally respect because they/everyone is just trying to get by.
      I guess how I’ve balanced those two conflicting feelings in my head is that I only take longer housesits. If I have to move too often, it’s not worth it anymore for me to be moving multiple times per month.

      Hi great question & thanks for watching! You can definitely review the pet-owners as a housesitter. For me, past reviews I’ve given show up under the ”feedback” section. If I go to past housesits (completed ones) and click on them, it gives me the option to give feedback. Let me know if that helps!
      Also how did your experience go?! I’d love to hear about it. Thanks for watching!

    I'm confused. Do they not pay you to house sit? Is it just free accommodations for you and a house sitter for them?

      Hi there, thanks for watching. That’s correct you’re exchanging free accommodations for house sitting basically. I am working on a follow up video to explain this in more depth, so stay tuned.

    Do you need a car when you house sit?

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  8 місяців тому

      Hi, great question! Sorry I didn’t respond to it earlier. I think it would totally depend where you’re housesitting. If you’re in a city with public transportation or that’s walkable, then I think you would be fine without. I’ve done that. If you’re somewhere more rural or suburban, I would imagine you would.
      You could also always ask the people you’re housesitting for if they are planning to leave their car or take it. I had one woman that actually wanted me to drive her car while she was gone. She didn’t want the battery to die because she was travelling for 7 weeks. So I think it will depend entirely on the situation!

      Great question, I don’t have a child so I can’t personally speak to this, but I would imagine yes. As long as you disclose in your profile/application that you’re traveling with a child, I don’t see why that would be a problem. Many people do it as a couple and just have one profile for both travelers since they are applying together, so I would imagine you could do something similar with a child. Thanks for your question & for watching the video!

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  Рік тому +2

      Hi Erin, thanks for your question. They generally have stuff in the house and say something like “help yourself to any food in the house. Anything in the fridge will go bad anyways by the time we get back” so I end up getting a lot of free food. However, it is not required that they leave you with a full stocked fridge. Also I’ve had some longer housesits that are over a month long so obviously no one has that much food stocked, so then you need to go out and buy some. So you have a reduced grocery bill but not zero. Hope this helps and thanks for watching !

      Yes, there is a fee to sign up on Trusted Housesitters, but it's cheaper than 2 nights in a hotel in most places, and your membership lasts for a year, so you can quickly make it worth the membership fee. Also the fee pays for everyone on the site to get background checked and for them to have support like a 24/7 vet advice line. Let me know if you have more questions about the site and thanks for watching!

    How do you get a background check if you do not live in the country you are going too? E.g; I am retired in Romania, and my SSN is useless here for background check purposes. However, if I get a background check from the Romanian authorities there is nothing on that document that an out of Romania house owner would trust or satisfy his/hers risk assessment! If I get an FBI check from US it would also be useless since I do not live there since 2015...; thus, I can hardly see that owners from countries outside Romania would actually trust. Not to mention the stereo type that most uneducated or racist West Europeans place on East Europeans, through their unfounded western bias or xenophobia against the latter. In my experience the answer and behavior I observe is totally different when meeting or interacting with those form the West and those well off financially in the East. Once I tell people, while speaking Romanian, even with an accent, that I come from Romania, most newly met people or businesses doors quickly close or get closed; however, when they learned that I am an American (speaking English this time with a US accent let's say) that chose to live in Romania and actually learned the local language, (just as I learned Italian when I lived in Italy) new doors open wide. I am the same person living the same way, being perceived differently because of my place of assumed identity. IN this case, the biased against Romanians is something that leaves me perplexed. They are perhaps suffering this form of tacit discrimination because of bad rep some of their co-nationals identified as Rom(s), or better known as Gypsies, These are ex- nomad culture folk originating in India which also settled in Romania throughout the centuries (as an oversimplification) and which are also found in most other countries in one form or another. I am not writing to express my frustration of my experience in Romania. Just wanted to comment on some requirements you mentioned; to paint a picture on how my motivation appears to someone who knows little about another, bases his/hers decision on a police report or my motivation for being interested to do house sitting, even if I have 20 years of proven service in US military, totally self sufficient with more than enough pension to pay my way wherever I choose to live. I would love to develop a housesitting service in Romania. I am not sure how much a Romanian family would trust me, to housesit their home, and for that I need to do some homework as in a business plan. Unfortunately, this is not a popular service here even though Romania has the highest percentage of house/property owners in Europe, I believe over 90%. Sorry for the long winded comment. Good luck! Subscribing.

      Hi, good question! I just looked into it and actually you have to be 21. That’s because it’s an international site and the legal age when you become an adult is different in different countries. By 21, you’d be considered a legal adult everywhere.
      Don’t get discouraged though! I know there’s other pet-sitting sites like Rover where you just have to wait until 18 to sign up.

      @@marenmakesit having lived in horse country, Horses are often a means of sport or transportation. When I was in Junior High school, my friends down the street had a horse barn and coral. Our houses were on a dirt road which some people rode horses on. My friends road the trails in the adjacent public lands which were mountainus. Because I was trained to ride and care for horses, when the family went out of town, I would go every day to feed, brush, water and exercise the horses. My friends dad gave me some money, but I would not have charged them as the dad had done lots for me including repairs to my go cart. Some people treat horses like pets, but most horse people have a different relationship with their horses. BTW, I was not allowed to ride their horses. They were trained to only let family members ride them. There was a whole process of me be introduced to the horses so they would cooperate with my care for them. Horses can easily kill a human by mistake and is important to know about how they act. Although I have known some smart horses, most domesticated horses would die from stupidity if left alone. I love riding horses, but taking care of them is not rewarding like taking care of a dog or cat.

      Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Trusted Housesitters!
      If you buy the “standard” or “premium” membership for Pet Parents, you actually do have “Home & Contents” protection insurance included with your membership. This covers you against property damage, theft and public liability if a sitter has an accident in your home, up to $1 million USD.
      All housesitters also get background checked to be able to have their profile put up on the site.
