I really have enjoyed watching and learning from your "A maker's journey" Hammer videos. I have just started my build and I hope that I have the enthusiasm and get as much enjoyment from my build as you seem to get with your power hammer build. My hats off to you for sharing your build and thanks again.
Really nice build, and a lot of good ideas in the construction. One addendum - you might want to add a flywheel to your motor - a heavy steel plate or something that the idle motor spins up, and helps overcome the initial reluctance of the system to engage. Had the same problem like you had with my build - the motor took two or three tries to start the hammer, stalling out before making the first full revelation of the cam. Added a couple old brake discs to the motor axis (bolted to the pulley), and now it starts on first try.
DerLaCroix1 I will definitely try that. Thanking about anchoring it to but concerned what it’s going to do to the concrete. Do you have yours anchored?
@@AMakersJourney Yes, mine is about your size, and even after filling the column with sand (which gets rid of a lot of the ringing, as well, better than concrete in the prior hammer), It still had a tendency to follow me through the shop like a puppy. I put it on a hardwood platform(timbers bolted into each other, 2 layers crossing, and then routed reasonably flat) to raise it to a sensible working height and further dampen the blows to the concrete ( steel on concrete is a recipe for slowly digging into it, imho), bolted the base down to that block, and then bolted the wood block down into the floor with L-brackets on the sides. You might worry that this puts the pedal to high to use, but a lot of commercial hammers have the pedal up at mid shin and further height after you put the base under. If yours ends up too high to use the pedal comfortably, consider making a stirrup that hooks into it to bring it down. I occasionally check&tighten the bolts that go into the wood, but so far, nothing has moved on me, after 2 years. If they would, you can just move them to a new hole and add a few more until it stays put where it should. Happy hammering!
Thank you i got another 1" shaft today it was 1.006 that was with mill scale on it i soaked it in acid for a while to remove it and got my inch ,dont know why the other one was 20 thousands light i could of done some shimming but i got enough work on it and dont want to add more . Im working on the power hammer and a belt grinder too, i think i was better before i retired lol ,i try to watch all your videos and i really thank you for answering me . Duane

Any chance of you doing a parts list and schematics kinda thing in the future, and also maybe further explaining the wheel assembly and its principles? You did a really good job with that hammer by the way...like yer work (and love yer approach) hadn't thought of sitting down to do this type of work before. Has great merit I'm thinking. Well done sir.
@@AMakersJourney these type of hammers are very unstable so you will need alot of counterbalance to smooth it out but without it the thing will pull bolts out of the ground. you could also reduce the size of pulley on your motor to a 3inch or possibly a 2.5inch. is the motor 3600rpm?
How far down do you have your motor from your top pulley? Just wondering as far as stability goes. Debating on having it higher or lower. I Have a 11/2 horse motor. About how much weight do you have on your base? I plan on putting concrete in the base and lower portion of my frame work.
Have you decided to offer a set of plans? I built one just by watching the first 5 parts but it didn't run like yours. I'd love to have a set of drawings to work to.
Really liked your engineering on the hammer and appreciated the measurements. I’m planning on making one of my own soon. Just a couple questions about your setup. What is your offset (from center of flywheel) for the cam? Did you use any counterweight for balance, and if so how much? Lastly, how much travel does the hammer have? Thanks again for sharing. You’ve made something to be proud of!
G F The center is 2 1/4 inches. And no I did not use a counter balance but I am thinking about putting one on. With bounce I’m guessing the travel is about 6 inches
Hi i talked to you before im making a power hammer some what like yours but with a different hammer set up because i had started it before you started but yours looks great i followed your series my problem i use 1 inch pillar block for 1" shaft i bought from a machine shop i dont know if it was cold or hot rolled it was shiny when i got it ,it was to be 1" but it is 20 thousands smaller and that bothers me for fitting in pillar block and to fit in my flywheel should it be that much smaller then 1 inch ? Duane Hoover No it should not be. I bought mine they were exactly 1 inch and I slid right on with no problem. Also check your set screws and make sure they’re not sticking out a little too far even the slightest bit will make it hard for them to go on.
I currently do not but I am thinking of making some prints up and selling them. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about this and I think I’m going to go ahead and design some plans
As I said before I got another 1" bar hot rolled app 22" it as not that good Not using I might be better with the 20 thousands under shaft first ill check again Tomarrow and ill get back ripped my wrist a little grinder bit me but back at it just slower later

Counter weights 180 degrees from drive toggle will calm it down. Using the old flywheel from my truck

to eliminate the slop from the ram rotating (even though it doesnt rotate much) add a second pillow block bearing. easy way to lock it in place.

Use body lifting round weights as a flywheel - they comes in diff weight, diameter to choose for the right torque
