Except, they did. And the 3rd ship that was sapposed to be in the class, was converted to a aircraft carrier. Originally 4 ships were planned. Only 2 actually were fully built.
Yea... Shinano's Aircraft Carrier remodelling was full of construction flaws which resulted in her relatively unimpressive destruction.

On April 7, 1945, was the Yamato's last and final mission. On an attempt to beach her self on Okinawa in a suicide mission, she was intercepted by the USN. For hours, wave after wave, she took on the most vicious and most ferocious torpedo bombers anf bombers, and finally, after 4 hours, she finally went down, and as she went dpwn, her magazines in the 1st and 2nd turret blew, splitting her bow. In the end, she sank with honor, and died as a true warrior titan
it was so mighty every single soldier who witness the Yamato’s last breath saluted in her honor,she was the enbodiment of Japan’s military might,her sinking ended the life of all Battleships,but her and her crew will not be forgotten,so will the Ships to fight alongside her!
Its an era in the right ship of the wrong war

The strongest battleship that ever sailed on the human history they say. But it was a bit out of it's time when it did. Carriers were definitely the dominant ship. Its like they forge the sharpest blade to bring in a gunfight.

I know, but imagine if the ship went into battle. Most of the Amarican battleship won't be in any Museum, or shows how powerful those guns were to a regular Destroyer, or still have those old flak AAAs that can shred any engaging dive or torpedo bombers.
But, I do agree with you. It was dock and went into hiding alot of time, because the Generals or command wanted to used the Yamato as a ship to invade Amarica's beaches.
Not like sending it to battle and crippled the Amarican ship into dismission, but nope, Generals head is so high on Yamaki, they just want it to show how powerful it is against Amarican soil.

Here’s how it would go out if it attacked a US force head on, It’d would be spotted by aircraft, since most fleets had Aircraft Carriers, Submarines would be sent out to sink/disable it, aided by aircraft, and if that wasn’t enough, the North Carolina was easily large enough to sink it to the bottle of the sea, the Japanese High Command knew the Superiority of the US Navy, and even if it did sink a few battleships and Carriers, so what? The US could easily replace them, this ship simply wasn’t right for the kind of war it was in, 20 years earlier? It’d be god against other ships, but the Carrier snuffed it out, Battleships are simply outdated, Subs, Torpedo Bombers and Carriers all carry the fire power able to sink them, and when you lose one, and aren’t an Industrial Superpower, lie Japan was, you’re in for a nasty surprise
Wrong ship, for the Wrong war, Carriers were the name of the game, everyone learned that the hard way, Allies quickly adapted, Axis stuck to their Battleships, another reason on how the Royal and American Navies absolutely spanked the Kriegsmarine and Imperial Navy

When the carriers are too far for your battery so you use it to shoot planes
They knew that planes were the Yamato weakness so they made a special shell to take down planes with 460mm cannons

Imagine a Uss Iowa with 4, 18 inch gun turrets, each with 4 individual guns. And 40 twin mounts. That would be the most destructive warship ever known. But it would never happen

Strength and power...It was a failure overall: Launched with the intention of a super ship, only to be crippled and destroyed after being deployed when battleships were obsolete: it really didn’t do anything besides exist. It retreated after its first battle at Leyte, betraying the very essence the Yamato was built for

In addition to being the name of a battleship, Yamato continues to live on in people's hearts as the old name of Japan, as the name of a Japanese person, and as the name of a Japanese city. Musashi is the same. Shinano is the name of a region in Japan and... actually, the name of one of the apple breed.

@jayman055 5 No it is not, you need really good luck to knock a plane out of the sky with 18 inch guns. It just doesn’t happen. I saw the ship knock tons of planes put of the sky with those 18 inch guns in this video.
But you can use timed fuse shells plus he got this from a video about the yamato
GreatLakesSturgeon google beehive shells, i know it happend a bit too much in the vid but its possible.
History tells us the beehive shells were just flaming balls of fire and the planes flew through them unharmed lol.
