  • This is how you LISTER!
I have to start the farm Lister engine. This is how you do it. The engine is used to drive the borehole water pump. This contraption reminds me of a Rube Goldberg device haha.

Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to create and post this! I found it very enjoyable!
I wouldn't want to presume to correct anyone, but maybe there's a club near you or an annual fair, where you could connect with people quite experienced, who might pass tips on to you! I did learn, and I did enjoy it, so thanks again! Also, I find it interesting that while you are feeding, the animals don't quite understand that you are the food source, and they come from afar and look to the piles on the ground for dinner first. Fascinating! Have a great day!

Thanks for your comment! I've moved to California from South Africa. My dad was into the old farm engines and raising animals. I made the video in part to remember my dad and home.

YOU DONT NEED THE QUICK START ! It gets blown through and out the engine by the time you have rotated the crank a few times. its a waist and could damage the engine. just use the compression release. Keep it on, spin the crank fast as you can then flip compression handle off quickly. Engine should start then.

Thanks for your reply. The engine makes me feel like such a weakling.

Also, spinning over without compression means nearly zero chance that the engine will fire while cranking. Those big flywheels will keep it rolling, giving time to pull off the crank handle and drop in the compression. A stuck crank handle can kill or maim in an instant. Keep a little grease or oil on the shaft where the crank attaches. Pull up & away from the engine rather than pushing down & leaning over it. Why does it appear to be turning backward? And yeah, lose the ether.

That engine is awesome, same with the animals. They get so excited when they see the food

They know that when they’re hand fed it must be something special haha.

Its a great old engine! I have a 1927 Anderson that runs like a top when you can convince it its needed! Its not hard to start , will start every time but sometimes wants to go back to sleep and promises to go to work tommow maybe!

That's wonderful. I've always had healthy respect for these things.

When cranking these motors a tip is to keep your thumbs the same side of the Handel as your fingers . In the event of you hiting compression and the motor firing and bouncing the flywheel backwards it will save you from breaking your thumbs . I was tought this as a 10 yr old when starting the old water pumps that we had to keep running all the time to keep the groundwork’s clear of water over the weekend. That was when 10 yr olds could work on sites many years ago one of my first paid jobs.

It is called a cs engine because it stands for cold start, stop using that devils breath ,you’ll do damage to the engine or yourself if it locks on compression.

Please fill in the gaps for us. My dad was the expert and as life sometimes goes I didn't learn enough from him. He was a mechanical wizard.
