I teared up a bit for this video. Met Chuck and Richard on the Sound of Perseverance tour. They were so friendly and happy to talk to an award 17 year old (me). Being in the presence of greatness for only a little bit of time can make someone better.
Same here....such a cool dude. Took 10 minutes of his time to get off his bus to hang out with us. Unreal. Also met Gene, and Sean and Paul from Cynic/Human. All great guys.
I met Richard Christy at MMF in '98 too, and being a aspiring Extreme METAL Drummer then, with DEATH being one of the MAIN reasons I traveled from here in good ol KANSAS to Milwaukee (geesh, WHAT a chythole 😬) . Both Richard and I, just ended up at the bar 🍻 for couple plus hours just talkin DRUMS and MORE DRUMS and B.S....Great times indeed! 🤘🔥🤘
To me, Death is bigger than all of those bands in my personal opinion. Chuck wrote some of Metals greatest riffs and melodic solos Ever... I put Chuck Schuldiner above most Metal guitarist. Including James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Jeff Hannamen, Kerry King etc.. when it comes to Iconic Metal guitarist Chuck was definitely one of the Greatest
Quite simply, the most underrated, and underappreciated, metal musician and writer of all time. The second wave of thrash, death metal, technical death, melodic death, technical metal, and progressive metal, all influenced and growing out of what he, and the musicians he worked with, created. Lyrically, his graphic, violent early stuff definitely built on what was going on at the time, but his progression to just writing honestly from his heart, and writing lyrics reflecting his observations and thoughts, was not common in that genre, and to many, like myself, was a refreshing change. I think the input of a creative and versatile drummer like Gene Hoglan (also underrated), who was a multi-instrumentalist, wrote music on guitar, bass, and drums, and a lyricist, gave Chuck a sounding board, an experienced opinion, and a drummer with some really fucking good taste (simple parts can be cool, too). I really wish the world could have heard the musical direction Chuck was going. I met him once after a show and was just a good human being, from what I could tell, and a fellow devout metalist with whom I could have an intelligent conversation. Cancer sucks!
Agree with everything except the first sentence. Chuck and Death were and are massively appreciated within the metal community and metal fandom in general. Just look at all the Death covers being done during the pandemic, the continued existence of the DTA tours and everything on youtube about Death. Just because it's not mainstream doesn't mean it's underrated or appreciated. Chuck is a metal god 🤘
I love all DEATH albums, but Symbolic came out the year I was born, and it's songs hold the most weight for me at this time in my life. RIP Chuck, we miss you.
I count myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to see Death perform twice. Once on the Human tour, the other time on the Symbolic tour, 2 best shows I've ever seen, period. Hurts to wonder what Chuck might have done this last 20 years if not for f'ing cancer. Just gone way too soon.
All of Death's albums are masterpieces in their own way. Even the less-perfect of the others, Spiritual Healing, still destroys 99.9% of all other DM albums.
I also have Spiritual Healing as a favorite along with Leprosy and Symbolic. I don't get how SH is so underrated but it is. Chuck sounds absolutely clear and brutal in it, the duo with James Murphy might be the best pairing in their lineup and the riffs are absolutely crushing. I'd take it over Human any day.
Deaths "Fate" album, was my first album by them in the 90's. It was a best of CD from SBG up to Human. The songs off of Spiritual are the ones that stood out to me the most and Chucks voice on Spiritual was on point and very audible. My top Death album hands down.
Its insane how this band continued to grow and expand with each release. As simply a fan of music its so much gold on those last 4 Death records . Rest in power brother !
Steve DiGiorgio didn't left because of a creative departure or something, her daughter was born that same year, and he couldn't manage to find the time to work on the upcoming Death album.
@@hugolafhugolaf Until I saw this comment, I wasn't even aware of the doc. I've been watching it for over an hour. Holy fuckin shit, about a lot of it.
Thought Patterns with Andy, but honestly I go back and forth with all of chuck’s work. Even today I was listening to Sound of Perseverance and really appreciating the musicality.
I really started thinking about Chuck's playing style from his riffs to his solos especially, and began to realize Chuck definitely played more for emotion and feel than just outright chaotic fast solos I mean sometimes they were, but I noticed the difference between him from most other DM musicians and singers is he goes for not only a badass sounding solo n riff but to give it feeling and atmosphere to take you off someplace like your riding a ride through Chuck's mind....but also what amazes me about Chuck was not only how skilled and unique he was with having such a strong vision that he set out to do no matter what because he lived his music it wasn't just to make money it was something he lived and breathe!! Or how in the earlier days how he came up with their signature sound and to be as young as he was with a voice sounding the way his does from just normal talking to sounding like a demon from hell and he did it effortlessly from the looks of it....like how did he not choke by singing/screaming like he did?!? To this day I don't understand it!! But what also always amazed me about Chuck was his knack for no matter what turmoil and fallouts he went through ever since the inception of the band there had always been personel changes with the band members like a chameleon changing after each album he would set out for a new and different vision with other musicians for his next project and I think it gave him a bad name in the "industry" that he was "difficult" to work with but I think a big part was Chuck was definitely a "Homebody" like I am myself......which dosent fare very well when your the frontman of a band that you created tho and was starting to gain recognition overseas but I think Chuck would just get fed up being away from home getting homesick and constantly being on the road on a tour bus or a hotel room when I'm sure Chuck truly only loved the performing side of touring but probably wasn't a big fan of constantly traveling which honestly I can understand because I'm very similar in that way and of course I have friends who don't understand why I would rather be at home sometimes to myself rather than running the streets hanging out at different places staying the night at different spots, but that's just the way I am and I think Chuck had that about him too so he got a bad rep but he was such a talented guy he always manage to keep his band together (although with different members each time) and recording and releasing albums that were and is quality music and the general consensus is Death hasnt put out one bad album ever!! And I agree with that!! Originally I was definitely way more into the first 3 earlier albums of theirs compared to the latter stuff because it was more prog DM and Chuck's voice started to change I didn't think it was as hard with the riffs as Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, and Spiritual Healing but I've grown to love all their albums now and there may be slower tracks on the later albums but then I started realizing the more I listened to those albums they still had some premo riffage on all those later albums their just hidden more in the middle of the tracks but just as hard!! So I've def grown to appreciate everything the band has done with each member each lineup was great in their own way!! And what I meant to say earlier the way Chuck manage to gravitate no matter how deep of shit he gotten into with his old bandmates or Manager he always could manage to gather up a really solid group of other musicians each time he would have a fallen out with former bandmates but would somehow always come out ontop and no matter all the bad press in Europe or in America great music is great music and people still wanted to hear what Chuck and whoever was in the band (at that time) was doing because they knew it was quality shit!!
This album is simply too good to be true. Their most compact record. All songs are flawless, awesome masterpieces. To me their greatest and most Legendary.
I gotta hear this album. Ive recently listened to Death and I must say it makes me strive to be a better guitar player plus Chuck being a cat person?! Im all in! He’s legend
when you try to play ( not necessarily successfully) a part from those two albums (Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance) you feel what CREATING ART means, at this point we can't speak about a music style like DEATH METAL... but about a high level of thinking....
the artwork was designed by chuck himself btw. he drew his idea and sent it to the painter with a letter. when I was younger I kinda liked this album but couldn't appreciate it the way it deserves. now im older and it hits differently. this album is about growing up, maturing. and it fascinates me that chuck wrote it being so young
The more I dig into Death the more I appreciate Chuck. The intricacies of the guitar parts on Symbolic are still mind blowing, and more so for something from the mid-90s, plus he was then the driving force for all of the lyrical content. It's hard to come up with any comparisons for someone who was the driving force musically of a technically revolutionary band, AND was the lyricist/vocalist, AND then did both really well, simultaneously, live. Like Hendrix, and maybe Prince/SRV to a lesser extent are the only other real examples I can think of where someone was an incredible composer/musician and was also the main lyricist/vocalist in such an influential band.
Chuck is so correct. Jim's experience with other genres truly can help take it to a next level. Some metal fans too wanting to be first to scream sellout are unable to comprehend this concept.
Such a beautiful mind, talent, and human being. He has influenced so many bands and multiple genres. A real role model, no ego, just pure art and innovation.
Easily my favourite Death record and such a spectacular album with a remarkable production. Also Gene's work is nothing short of unique and downright phenomenal on "Symbolic" and really propels the songs with a distinct drive.
I play guitar and I played symbolic and Crystal Mountain with my brother and My Friends in a Metal band called Häken, then I played the entire album like a challenge. This album is very symbolic for me. I learned very much. Thanks Chuk, thanks "Death"
Chuck - The Legend himself! Such an influent band in the history of metal. Like Rush in the history of Progressive Rock. We will always remember Chuck, the best producer of metal actually, he combines such a talanted people in his albums.
Even though I agree that Symbolic is outstanding, it is very hard for me to single out one Death album and say it is the best. I mean, their sound kept evolving but every Death album is (at least) great. The sheer level of consistency when it comes to songwriting is simply amazing, there are very few bands that manage to pull this off throughout their career.
Chuck is jammin in heaven since 1 member per instrument has past on since chuck..scott clendenin on bass,,,ralph santolla on guitar and now sean reinert on drums. If THAT line up was here still would they have made an excellent death album??
I think he would of stayed with Control Denied for awhile ,and like Halford left Priest ,then returned. I think Chuck would ultimately return to Death and keep the metal faith alive and give Death Metal to the masses !💀
I have taken guitar lessons off and on from Bobby for many, many years. Not only is he an amazingly versatile guitarist, he's also a really nice person.
It was my first Death's album I bought when I was 17 and it's my favourite ever since. Of course I LOVE every Death's record, but this is some kind of special to me.
Symbolic 😏, a TRUE masterpiece IMO and my personal ALL time favorite from the band. Took me awhiles to get it actually, as I was still stuck on prior efforts via (NO, NOT Human "great album but..." rather?) Spiritual Healing and Individual Thought Patterns 😏.....RIP Rock in peace Chuck! 🤘🔥🤘
Little fsct, myself and Gene are lifelong fans of America's Team The Almighty Dallas Cowboys. Approx 8 -9 years ago I arranged for the Cowboys Star Magazine to interview Gene about his love. The magazine, along under another name before becoming the Star mag was the longest and most subscribed to publication dedicated to one team. In the thank list for every Death recording....as well Symbolic he thanked and wished them well that season 1995 and as if today their kast SB victory.
Awesome! He is now passing along his killer chops at the University of Central Florida (UCF) as a professor in the music department (jazz guitar, specifically). Just think about how cool it would be to be a massive Death fan and have Bobby as your prof. Damn.
Loved the changed he made in his music with this album. My fav death album by far. It touched my soul like no other album. Very similar to the big Emotions i get in some of Dio's albums. I love "the sound of perseverance"2
Speaking of evolution of a band,THIS is how evolution is supposed to be. Not to go soft and turn to band aid(looking at you Disturbed),but change sound a bit and KEEP original sound. And in my opinion,THE BEST Death album(Symbolic), although other albums of the same band are great to the core.
We were at a Strapping Young Lad show and my friend is standing next to me with his girlfriend. This huge guy comes by and starts talking to them, and then he just cuts my friends out and talks only to Ben's girlfriend for a bit, then walks away. I had only seen Gene's close up photo on the back of the Symbolic cd case and didn't recognize him, so I asked who that guy was. My friend responds, "Dude that was Gene Hoglan! And he just hit on my girlfriend! Awesome!" Everyone high fives in front of Ben's girlfriend like she wasn't there.
Interesting to learn a bit more about the production side. I'm not a huge fan of the production of any Death album before Symbolic, and now I know why!
I was around back then. Human was a game changer. The other albums are great but Human set the bar just as Reign in Blood was the moon landing for Slayer. Just my opinion which is informed by facts.
Scream, Bloody, Gore will ALWAYS be my absolute favorite, but every other album is a masterpiece all their own as well. Death is the only band I can seriously look at and say that every album is perfect. I think why I can say that is because each album is a skillful progression over the last. It all culminates in Sound of Perseverance and is the pinnacle of death metal imo Not only was Death a dope band, but a very humble one as well. Such a shame Chuck had to be taken from this world so soon. Truly a beautiful soul with a lot to say and not enough time. He made music because it was a labor of love, his passion, and it definitely shines through over all else. I hope wherever he is that he is proud of what he accomplished here. An underrated band for sure, but the greatest of all time for those who know.
there is two things make the album special for me , beside of Chuck's greatness (as always on every album) 1. Gene Hoglan drum skill 2. Bobby Koelble jazz scale guitar solos (unfortunately his solos only in 3 songs)
LOST MEDIA: Demo Cassette Audio-rip of Ontario, Canada, band THE CURSE. From '86? Maybe even '85. Its all instrumental, rumored to be Chuck's '(something)' in the Slaughter rehearsal space. I believe it's connected, as the story of Chuck's time in Canada, the recording of the Slaughter demo, would match up. I had it once. Got it from Thrashmageddon Forums, potentially from
I wish more people 'got it' but what's great is the thought of the new respect and fans that this album will attract, day upon day, year upon year, FOREVER! Really wish he was still here. He was obviously a great and brilliant guy. Real death is fucking shit!!!
Late to the party.. discovered Death about 3 months ago. I'm fuggin obsessed!! Masterful stuff. Not really into death metal per ce, this band is its own thing.. almost it's own genre to me!

#19: Death actually featured acoustic guitar before Symbolic, in the song "Destiny", from "Individual thought Patterns"!
Yes, but it was just intro. He wanted to put acoustic guitars inside the songs.

Nikolay Nikolov well, “ Perennial Quest” was just the outro so it’s a fair point.

Very glad I stole this cd at a record store, one of my favorite albums from these guys hands down
December 11 is a day I always feel sad. I remember the day he passed on. My first real guitar influence that has colored my riffs since the early 90s.
December 13
Chuck is jammin in heaven since 1 member per instrument has past on since chuck..scott clendenin on bass,,,ralph santolla on guitar and now sean reinert on drums. If THAT line up was here still would they have made an excellent death album??
Death is the only band that all the albums is on top...all their albums is so close to perfection...We SUPPORT CHUCKS DREAM AND NOT RUMOURS...
I love his lyrics because they are relevant to things that most human feel in their life.
Symbolic was a game changer for me. It was smart and the drums were unlike any other metal before
I have always wondered... how many Death albums we could've had after TSOP if Chuck hadn't died... and how they would've sounded like...
Im sure it hurts every time you think about it!😔
I think he would of stayed with Control Denied for awhile ,and like Halford left Priest ,then returned. I think Chuck would ultimately return to Death and keep the metal faith alive and give Death Metal to the masses !💀
I have taken guitar lessons off and on from Bobby for many, many years. Not only is he an amazingly versatile guitarist, he's also a really nice person.
When ppl make comments like this about how great a band is i'm choosing to listen. Gonna check this band out.
It was my first Death's album I bought when I was 17 and it's my favourite ever since. Of course I LOVE every Death's record, but this is some kind of special to me.
What a great human. Love that guy.
20 years today… Cheers, Chuck! 🤘🏻
Thanks for the music Chuck. We miss you.
Took some lessons from Bobby here in Central Florida. Amazing guitarist and great human being
DTuned wasn't Chuck from Altamonte ?
Awesome! He is now passing along his killer chops at the University of Central Florida (UCF) as a professor in the music department (jazz guitar, specifically). Just think about how cool it would be to be a massive Death fan and have Bobby as your prof. Damn.
I took lessons from him for years. You're absolutely right, he's surprisingly modest and humble and has a great sense of humor.
@@vikingson9000 yes
@@michaelr.4878 that's right, I took lessons at his home.
These facts are straight facts. Good research!!!
Symbolic and Master of Puppets are my all time favorite metal albums.
DEATH THE BAND THAT PROGRESSED THE MOST. R.I.P CHUCK
Carcass also!
@@peytdawgs9909 BUT AFTR HEARTWORK I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE THEIR STUFF. SWAN SONG SUKED ASS
@@CrackaDon1 it was groovy but different but what about surgical steel it's brutal!
My favorite Death album.
Loved the changed he made in his music with this album. My fav death album by far. It touched my soul like no other album. Very similar to the big Emotions i get in some of Dio's albums. I love "the sound of perseverance"2
Symbolic is on of the greatest metal
albums ever recorded. I listen to it reguraly to this day.
how the hell did Gene the ITP record with only 3 weeks rehearsal. What a goat!
Greatest album of all time. There are acoustic guitars at the beginning of Destiny on ITP though.
It was just intro to the song. He wanted to put acoustic guitars inside the songs. And on ITP (Destiny’s intro) was played on keyboard
Symbolic is still to this day my go to for testing a sound system. It was so well produced that it would sound awesome on the shittiest of stereos.
You are always in my heart, Chuck.
This is the kind of stuff I want to see, great work!
Man imagine DIo and Chuck together in a band that would be amazing.
Symbolic and Spiritual Healing are my go to.
Interesting to learn a bit more about the production side. I'm not a huge fan of the production of any Death album before Symbolic, and now I know why!
@1:37 my dear friend and KISS ARMY Soldier with THE LONG SLEEVE 78 solo album shirt.God I eish I had that photo to put in. A frame
Not only was acoustic guitar on perennial quest....but also as the ending solos to Crystal mountain, which were badass licks
SYMBOLIC IS A MASTERPIECE!!♥️♥️♥️♥️
Love this!! Thank you.
WITHOUT JUDGEMENT is my #1 favorite Death song (#2 jeolousy from Individual Thought Patterns #3 Spirit Crusher) LONG LIVE DEATH
This video is great, thank you
Great video
I was around back then. Human was a game changer. The other albums are great but Human set the bar just as Reign in Blood was the moon landing for Slayer. Just my opinion which is informed by facts.
At the time Symbolic wasn’t that liked and neither was Individual Thought Patterns. These albums became legendary because of Sound of Perseverance.
Scream, Bloody, Gore will ALWAYS be my absolute favorite, but every other album is a masterpiece all their own as well. Death is the only band I can seriously look at and say that every album is perfect. I think why I can say that is because each album is a skillful progression over the last. It all culminates in Sound of Perseverance and is the pinnacle of death metal imo
Not only was Death a dope band, but a very humble one as well.
My favourite metal album. Period.
Released on 21st of March. That's my birthday too. Yaaay. 😂💜🎸🤘
Long live Death!
there is two things make the album special for me , beside of Chuck's greatness (as always on every album)
1. Gene Hoglan drum skill
2. Bobby Koelble jazz scale guitar solos (unfortunately his solos only in 3 songs)
What songs?

LOST MEDIA: Demo Cassette Audio-rip of Ontario, Canada, band THE CURSE. From '86? Maybe even '85. Its all instrumental, rumored to be Chuck's '(something)' in the Slaughter rehearsal space. I believe it's connected, as the story of Chuck's time in Canada, the recording of the Slaughter demo, would match up.
I had it once. Got it from Thrashmageddon Forums, potentially from
Bless Chuck's soul that man deserved the world
I wish more people 'got it' but what's great is the thought of the new respect and fans that this album will attract, day upon day, year upon year, FOREVER!
Really wish he was still here. He was obviously a great and brilliant guy. Real death is fucking shit!!!
"Brand new feature of acoustic guitars"
The song Destiny: Am I a joke to you?
Late to the party.. discovered Death about 3 months ago. I'm fuggin obsessed!! Masterful stuff. Not really into death metal per ce, this band is its own thing.. almost it's own genre to me!
best metal album EVER. PERIOD.
Chuck I love you an you’ll always be the best guy to call a pioneer an what you gave me personally in my heart an mind an the fact of how amazing of a musician you were an what you created for so many of us fans of more extreme music. You are so loved an respected....
Thanks so much for this.
Death is the only Metal band that doesn't have a bad song.
