- From shot stoppers to excellent ball players - the evolution of goalkeepers from 1871 to 2020. In today's video, we take a look at how modern goalkeepers have involved into being great football players and being able to act as a sweeper keeper to take an active part in the game. Since the introduction of the goalkeeper back in 1871, the goalkeeper role has evolved from being mostly a shot stopper back in the day, to almost being an extra defender in today's possession based game. Here, the modern goalkeeper needs to be good with his feet and capable of playing out from the back, and goalkeepers such as Manuel Neuer, Ederson, Alisson and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen are all excellent examples of great, ball-playing modern goalkeepers. Of course, modern goalkeepers can also be great shot stoppers as seen with David De Gea and Jan Oblak, but there is a big trend leaning more towards modern goalkeepers being increasingly good with their feet - and in today's video, we will take a look at the evolution of the modern goalkeeper to see how goalkeepers have evolved from the likes of Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks over Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Sar into Manuel Neuer, Alisson and Ederson in today's modern evolution of goalkeepers.

Nah bro wtf. As a defender who has never had a "good" goalkeeper to say, I always need to be aware of my surroundings to help the keeper, and if my partner CB pushes up, I yell at him to mark a man while hes at it. As well as for full backs, LB and RB I tell them to play as secondary CDMs if the midfield is open. But I can also play as a RB, LB, and CDM so it helps to know how to play those positions

It is crazy how much the game has changed and how much the keeper role has changed. I remember when I started playing keeper 20 some years ago, the thought of passing the ball back was terrifying. Now, my teams expect me to start the attack. When it comes to indoor soccer, if i don't get an assist or goal, my team thinks i had an "off night."

Hot take: When keepers wear bright color kits it makes their performance worse because attackers are able to spot them more easily, and pinpoint where they need to shoot without too much trouble.

I disagree, because the field is green, I think the easiest colour to spot is black, since the grass it's actually a pretty bright colour itself
But ur eyes are drawn towards colour making so they will aim at u more

Jorge Campos had a play in which he'd fake falling to force players to shoot, but he'd spring right back up to easily catch the ball. Unfortunately there's not much video footage of this. But all of us 90's kids remember the play perfectly. Players in other positions have all sorts of plays or skills. To me it was amazing how a goalkeeper could have a play like that where he would trick the attackers. P.S. look up Jorge Campos' scissor kick goal playing for Atlante as a striker or his rainbow flick + assist playing for LA Galaxy.

A much needed break down to the dynamism of the most misunderstood position in the game of football. Pundits and the like never understand the duality of the position and the constant pressure and game sense it demands on the player between the sticks.
Well, you gotta admit, that goalkeepers technic has changed a lot too. Like the style of throwing the ball in the field or gong into the 1 on 1 against the striker.. or the most impressive part of saving..

When I was a kid growing up in Manchester in the 70s, Sepp Maier was the keeper who really stood out. Nobody had ever played with those oversized foam-faced gloves before, and knee length padded shorts. But the greatest of all time is Peter Schmeichel. He introduced so many innovative techniques like the starfish save; which he used from his days of playing in goal in handball matches. And he scored a few too.
Yashin is the best goalkeeper in history, his reflexes and divings were unreal.

Loved the video, but it was a bit unfair on Bravo to say he wasn't particularly good with the ball on his feet, his striker's skills, shot stopping and mostly his presence and skills to structure the team were what was built upon in the Chilean football team that lead to back-to-back Copa América's and 2 impressive consecutive World Cup runs.
You can say that while playing in Europe he lacked sometimes, but when it came to putting on his national team's jersey, he always delivered.

Stegen and Oblak in on another level of reflex and save even their team have poor performance.
Alisson is somehow depend more on team performance, because he is great under good team performance.
Navas and Neuer are also great but not on Stegen and Oblak level.

Higuita was the GK who went out more in games and he would even dribble past players and he have a lot of goals

Lehmann changed the game.
He was nearly perfect in all aspects, was not static like every other goalie with their traditional 1v1 technics, but what he really made new was his ability to own the 16meters.
Even back at Schalke in the early 90s he saved flanks and corners no matter where they going to.
His saves where focused on freeze, not punching which for example Kahn did untill 2008.
There was a massive turning point 92- 96 , from traditional to advanced technics, and Lehmann was the first and the best goalie who took that turn.
Even until now i never seen anything close to his ability to control the 16 meters.
I don't agree. Lehmann was too error-prone and too over-impressed with his own ability. It speaks volumes that even in his prime he struggled to dislodge Kahn from the German national side, mostly because Kahn was simply a better goalkeeper.
Lehmann wouldn't even make a top 20 of all time Premier League keepers
@@themancuniancandidate2744 idk, nobody understood why Kahn was nr 1 as far as i remember. And finally he was, 4 years too late. I think that situation shouldnt be a preference for his skills.
But i agree, in england his mindset changed and so his continuity.
I have never seen anything close to what he did in his years from Schalke to BVB, and all i care about is watching goalies.
It's the one position through out the years that hasn't lost its importance

Ich würde nicht ter Stegen als einer der besten Torhüter aller Zeiten betiteln, weil erst drei Jahre auf Weltklasse Niveau spielt und weil er viele Patzer in der Vergangenheit hatte.

Ter Stegen is probably the most complete goalkeeper playing right now. Oblak is probably the best shot stopper since prime Buffon and has been for years. Oblak deserves more respect than he gets.
