@@AudioPilz And some of those memes actually last 2 frames in this edit. Trying to pause on them is like filling your car up and hitting 00 on the decimals each time you stop the pump. That probably doesn't make much sense.
The West Pest is my most used piece of gear: I've had one since December 2022, and probably play it every day, if not every other day. There's some pretty unique sounds you can get using feedback patching, and especially by adding a couple externals you can get really carried away. The Dynamic Gate and the Wavefolder alone make the pest worth it. I would concur with the general sentiment that for some applications the sound can be awfully "clicky" which isnt always ideal
You can get rid of the percussive click by patching in an east coast style ADSR with a slowish attack - I use one of the envelopes on my Neutron for this. Obviously the clicky-ness is a major part of the instrument’s character, but it’s nice to have options :)
@@lolatu4402 the multi press functions are... annoying. But fortunately I find a lot of it is set and forget, so you don't spend too much time fiddling with it. Maybe I would more if it wasn't so obtuse to navigate, but not much that can be done about that. It's a really great platform once you throw in some peripherals and utilities!
Caught that quick picture of Kate Bush from this week's story about how she used to record her own flatulence and then play tunes with it. The difference between Kate and us doing the same thing was we had to settle for using Casio SK-1s to record our farts and she used her Fairlight :)
Pretty sure fart sampling was the first thing any British act that got their hands on a sampler did. I remember reading that New Order’s first samples when they got an Emulator was the band members farting…
I don't think the criticisms here are taking account the biggest selling point of this thing... Its Price. For $250 you get the equivalent of what would be nearly $1000 in separate euro rack modules (Oscillator, Wave folder, Low Pass Gate, Sequencer, Midi to cv converter). On it's own it's not the most robust thing but alongside other gear or as a starter piece for your modular set up it's an incredible deal.
Another synth I own. At this point you just need to review the Behringer Neutron, the Volca Sample 2, and the Yamaha EMT-10, and you'll have covered all 9 of my synths. :) Keep up the great work!
I vote for the Neutron as well. Lovely little synth, but with atrocious details in it. The synth in this video is something I could almost consider buying, regardless of it's cons.
"And now for something completely different": the West Pest! I have one and i love it even if its type of sound doesn't fit in every style of electronic music. Great video.
This thing has a lot of value and isn't bad gear at all. A lot of people have one of the cheap Behringer synths at this point and adding a patchable wavefolder, lfo that goes from 40 seconds well into audio rate, switching waveform VCO, extra random source, basic sequencer, LPG style VCA, and random clock source would be considerably more expensive if you added individual modules. It's arguably worth the price for the wavefolder and VCO alone. Saying there is no way to clock the sequencer other than tap tempo and external is sort of incorrect because there is an lfo sitting right there that can be your sequencer clock. I agree the 4 bit display is borderline impossible to remember in it's entirety but I just rotate through them and listen until the setting sounds good. Depending how you use the thing they don't need to be adjusted too often. As for build quality time will tell I guess. Finale jam sounded really good!
I had the West Pest for a while. Fun little box, but my Eurorack already could do 99% of its features. Aaand something happened for which I needed the money elsewhere, so it went back to the retailer... But i'd recommend it for someone who wants to get something else than standard subtractive synthesis. And if i visit Vienna, I really have to pay Klangfarbe a visit, just for keeping your show going. :D
Your work is intoxicating, as usual: a mind-bogglingly entertaining drive-by of yet another questionable for-quick-profit musical appliance. I was so happy as soon as I sent mine back; my suspicions that it wasn't me were verified when I realized that looking at the empty spot where it had been was way better than seeing it sitting there ever was. Your excellent as-always review (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) was a great reminder of how aggro & plonky it sounded no matter what knob- & button-wrangling moves I tried. Way more fun to curl up with my two darling little twin volca modulars & easily call up impossibly alien gamelanic sound tapestries seemingly emerging from the swirling mists of timelessness.
You've finally gotten to a piece of gear I own! This was my first "real" synth and also my gateway to Eurorack (much to the chagrin of my wallet.) I do agree with the bit on the hate-wall about the outputs being weirdly low and I just take a "push the button till I like it" approach to the more arcane functions hidden in the UI. Love it otherwise.
its one of couple of midi controllable west coast style synths , also cheapest gateway to Low pass gate (LPG) Buchla Bongos. you can use it to process external audio too .. with that LPG . which is quite the premium of a feature !! it has very nice analog rich sound , which is way too loud for your usual line level mix presets.. it has more possibilities when combined with other modular or semi modular gear.
Nice... If I only had a dime for every dollar I spent on bad gear you recommended, I would have about a grand! PS - Your Roast was a real winner! Thank you for the laughs, as always!
Perfect timing, I was literally just about to search for a review. Had heard good things, but didn't realize their "display" is four lights that you have to decode... Yeah, think I'll pass on the West Pest, but is considering their Nifty Bundle for a small eurorack to incorporate modules with my semi-modular synths.
Awesome episode as always Florian. When looking at one of these remaindered in the mid year sales, I decided to buy the Roland S-1 instead at the same price point. I know they are are not like for like but I think I made correct bad gear decision. I can now source Dreadbox gear from a nearby dealer, so instead of the East Beast / West Pest (which I have to mail order), I would probably pay extra and look at the Typhon. Thanx for all the fun.
The West Pest sounded phat and dope in the mix for sure and the wave folding is a definite pro and the price is decent for an analog mono with sequencer of that caliber. I guess I need to revisit the specs of the Volca Modular, too, though. Sidebar: I attended the 2007 DEMF and witnessed many modular rigs that were just out of control 1960s huge, making jams that were "meh." So I guess maybe the West Pest is good for dabblers in the field who like to travel light. Thanks for the music, clips, and a great show as always!
I messed around with one of these awhile back and was unimpressed... and I'm far far away from being a "seasoned synthesist". I'm delighted that you covered it, though. Maybe I appreciate it a bit more?... while also not wanting it to join the pile of gear. Thanks, Florian.
You tamed the beast! For such a rare and obscure little box you came up with a nice jam 👍🏼. Looks like a nice addition to a studio if you want to spice up your music with some wilder and unexpected twists.
ok but it sounds incredible for the small range of sounds it can do; also I like that the prices are in behringer territory but it's an original machine with a real personality and still quite a few features (for a small portable setup I can appreciate the midi to cv, the s&h; the arp). yeah take that behringer stans. It was a rocky start because the og firmware is horribly buggy with midi (and the step sequencer was only 31 steps!) but after unscrewing a few screws and figuring out the firmware tool it's a lot better. I also call it the poor man's 0-coast.
great video, when you mentioned that it only does one sound well it made me think of my behringer td3 MO the 303 devil fish clone but maybe i just need more modules to expand the sound possibilities.

That "menu" is unforgivable. It sounds fantastic though. The finale jam was the absolute best. Clearly that's where it excels - a sort of sophisticated version of the sega genesis FM chip harshness. Maybe you were just harnessing the FM but I think i detected a lot of fold as well.
West Coast gateway drug is exactly what it was for me. I agree the interface is annoying and requires cheat sheets but the dynamics lpg section is worth the price alone.
0:59. I never thought of 7of9 as the human/Borg morphized semimodular synth. As a Trekkie and synth nerd this is a profound meme! Ohh I’ve been bad geared assimilated.
Awesome that you got to experience the pest. The intro had the twangy characteristic sound. It definitely has a special and limited sound palette. I actually got a pest for the wavefolder to go with grandmother and the barp2600 in my semimodular foray. Another toober, Bata, got his pest to do some insane bass. I was impressed. This is why I want a rolca s1 to feed the wavefolder waves it can't even imagine. That 4-bit info code truly sucks, but it is easier to use it semi modular with any controls externally, like you have discovered, and skip all the sequencer stuff. I learned a couple of shifts just to get my stuff done, but color me clueless on most of it.
Awesome vid, again. The West Pest was the device that led down the rabbit-hole to Eurorack modular. $2500 US later I can almost do 4-note polyphony when not doing chaotic beep-boop. 😛
It certainly sounds great (they’re Pittsburgh Modular designed circuits). Always love analog FM. The quality of life issues are probably going to be the kicker for most people. Agree, West Pest is an egregious name, but remember same company calls their Eurorack case “Niftycase.”
There just aren't a lot of options for West coast style synth, and we'll take whatever we can get. Even with eurorack, a west coast oriented setup might need a soldering iron and some obscure kits to be complete. User interface might be 1/10 points, but that it's affordable is worth at least 20/10 points.
I like anything that's unique &/or quirky with a reasonable step or pattern sequencer as a feature included. There my favourite tools more & more so nowadays. There are the gear we have got to know by standing out for magic sequencer & sound box trickery by now... & there are more of such devices coming thru than ever, without the bigger main spotlight on them as yet... as the bigger players have got. This box is a ace to play a hand on the table tho... Great video once again, I can rely on good product demo's & people like yourself... Who get on with the job of reviewing well, (the ones who leave any ego on hold should be the most successful on here imo) U make knowing what to buy or keep in mind as gear, new or old... Much easier to decide on... We can't as easily demo gear in-store as u once could b4. All this reviewing & video production time now u put into things... Will, & is making u a great producer & programmer of outboard equipment especially. Make sure u turn this period of life & experience... Into some real time afterwards, that u can really take the time u want, with the best gear u find & keep thru this... & there will be may fans of this now, that would like ya music too. U get a good DAWLESS jam up working for the ingredients of releasable electronic music... as quickly as u also do the videos too. If u were a producer living in my city, I'd be trying to get to know u & make music or a project from 4 sure... lots of people get stuck on starting tracks & ideas for inspiration to spring off with electronic gear... The DAW is a blank canvas of infinite depths & direction to open ideas into & begin from. & DAWLESS mean u have to actually open a manual & take interest in a bit of gear to start enjoying anything from it?? So people get stuck starting good material imo & mid age experience of doing this too... U R good at it 4 sure tho.
Ah, nice, a very well done episode that marks the return of featuring really bad gear. The only way of making this horror box worse, would be adding a tongue operated D-Beam and samples of Nick Batt expressing his love for pulse width modulation.
I returned the west pest the first week I got it..... pitch range on the oscillator was a joke, and the built in sequencer was buggy! I had to turn it off and back on to fix this strange issue with playback. If you have racks of modular gear, you dont need this toy. You also prove my point by adding in other pieces of gear by trying to make a GOOD sounding sequence. If someone is looking for a semi modular entry point, this is just OK.
Wow now I'm missing the Argon8 and then you covered all my wishlist 😂 It doesn't seem to sound bad but the UI seems indeed quite annoying. Ps. Great first Jam... it reminded me of Ozric Tentacles somehow
The precurser to the West Pest is the Pittsburgh Modular Double Helix Module. I'll tell you what tho, PGH MOD just sounds good. It's strangely no frills, and yet precise. It just sounds clean all the time.
Wavefolder - ✅ Audio rate FM - ✅ LPG - ✅ Random voltage generator - ✅ What it really needs to round out the "West coast starter pack" feature set is a second oscillator, and cross-modulation between the two (i.e. each one is hooked up to the FM input of the other). That's what I think it's missing to put out a wider range of the typical Buchla sound - or would at least open it up to weird sci fi sound FX design 🙃 Ditch the LFO for a second oscillator that can go down to LFO territory, add cross-modulation, then we're talking.
Great budget module to get some west coast flavor, it can do some sick baselines, might sell it after I pick up a cascadia which is 10x the price of the Pest.
At least you get whole 4 LEDs! Imagine having to count blinks on a single LED... that was how in the 80s and 90s your car's ECU would blink three-digit fault codes at you; one blink per second with inter-digit pauses of 2 seconds and pauses of 4 seconds or so between codes. It was pure torture 😋

Awesome vid, again. The West Pest was the device that led down the rabbit-hole to Eurorack modular. $2500 US later I can almost do 4-note polyphony when not doing chaotic beep-boop. 😛
Modular - not even once...
It certainly sounds great (they’re Pittsburgh Modular designed circuits). Always love analog FM. The quality of life issues are probably going to be the kicker for most people. Agree, West Pest is an egregious name, but remember same company calls their Eurorack case “Niftycase.”
👍👍👍
There just aren't a lot of options for West coast style synth, and we'll take whatever we can get. Even with eurorack, a west coast oriented setup might need a soldering iron and some obscure kits to be complete. User interface might be 1/10 points, but that it's affordable is worth at least 20/10 points.
Yeah, it makes the whole thing much more accessible!!!
Longtime subscriber - begging you... pleading... do Eurorack! Not just a module, but the whole format. You know you want to.
Damn you. Could never get a note out of this but I feel the urgent need of that Buchlastep vs Eurofunk from a Westcoast of My Choice sound, right now.
Thank you so much!!!
Ah, nice, a very well done episode that marks the return of featuring really bad gear. The only way of making this horror box worse, would be adding a tongue operated D-Beam and samples of Nick Batt expressing his love for pulse width modulation.
Tongue operated D-Beam❤️❤️❤️
God damn it. Techno jam1 in this show is the fatest fatest yet and with this esoteric synth. Well done!
He’s so annoying, making great music every week. Oh did i say annoying? I meant cool.
Thank you!!!
Great video 👍. I can't say it's at the top of my list but in its favour it's not going to overlap with gear I've already got so it's a maybe.
This one is "special";)
I returned the west pest the first week I got it..... pitch range on the oscillator was a joke, and the built in sequencer was buggy! I had to turn it off and back on to fix this strange issue with playback. If you have racks of modular gear, you dont need this toy. You also prove my point by adding in other pieces of gear by trying to make a GOOD sounding sequence. If someone is looking for a semi modular entry point, this is just OK.
Yeah, it's a weird piece of kit!
Ah, its good to see some bad gear featured on the bad gear show again :D
Always a pleasure;)
Yeah man. Always a Great show.
Thank you!!!
need extended views of the cat in a bath playing congas
Classic!!!
@@AudioPilz dat kat on sid
That super eurobeat at the bottom of the ice berg felt like a personal insult 💀
Definitely nothing personal;)
Don’t worry, Dave Rodgers will protect us when the time comes. With Max Coveri by his side.
I replaced the PSU with a Eurorack USB power supply, It is now being more hated.
It is so good to do pluck sound, hard to get more by itself.
Plucks for days!!!
5:30 has a nice depth to the bass, neat!
Thank you!!!
sounds great though, I loved the intro theme.
Happy to hear that!!! Thanks!!!
Wow now I'm missing the Argon8 and then you covered all my wishlist 😂
It doesn't seem to sound bad but the UI seems indeed quite annoying.
Ps. Great first Jam... it reminded me of Ozric Tentacles somehow
Thank you!!! Great suggestion!!!
The precurser to the West Pest is the Pittsburgh Modular Double Helix Module. I'll tell you what tho, PGH MOD just sounds good. It's strangely no frills, and yet precise. It just sounds clean all the time.
Thanks for the heads up!!!
Damn no piece of gear escapes the ever watchful eye of bad gear anymore it seems
No mercy;)
Happy Friday Florian!
Have a nice weekend!!!
Awesome sauce!
Mmmmmh, Sauce...

What it really needs to round out the "West coast starter pack" feature set is a second oscillator, and cross-modulation between the two (i.e. each one is hooked up to the FM input of the other). That's what I think it's missing to put out a wider range of the typical Buchla sound - or would at least open it up to weird sci fi sound FX design 🙃
Ditch the LFO for a second oscillator that can go down to LFO territory, add cross-modulation, then we're talking.
Agreed!!!
the Gasometers building looks amazing... I would love to live in one of those flats under that dome...
Take one facing the outside, the one's on the inside are a nightmare;)
you should do another video where you do a set with a bunch of the bad gear.
Already did that for the 10K special episode;)
@@AudioPilz yeah years ago 👻
"Finale": fucking powerful groove
Thank you!!!
Anyone else wanna see Pilz make a Tumblr just with the memes he uses each week so we actually get a chance to read half of them?
Is Tumblr still a thing???
Ahh I was hoping for that intro to feature Vamonos Pest from Breaking Bad Gear… Kudos for the Lost Highway sax, though!
Damn, what a missed opportunity!!!
Quirky cool little synth.
👍👍👍
Great budget module to get some west coast flavor, it can do some sick baselines, might sell it after I pick up a cascadia which is 10x the price of the Pest.
Yeah, it's really good at that one sound;)
At least you get whole 4 LEDs! Imagine having to count blinks on a single LED... that was how in the 80s and 90s your car's ECU would blink three-digit fault codes at you; one blink per second with inter-digit pauses of 2 seconds and pauses of 4 seconds or so between codes. It was pure torture 😋
I'd call that pro mode;)
