    I was a machinist for 30 years and this is how it works, Center drill, drill, bore for position, ream for size. Standard procedure for tool maker.

      For critical location I would use a truing EM. Straighten out the hole so a ream will follow with less shifting

      Does it make a difference if you drilled with a carbide drill? We get good results with those but I'm sure it depends on your level of precision.

    if drill leans a bit, reamer will follow. at least boring will create a straight hole

      I do like this :
      I start with a smaller drill, with a mill I create a straight hole, I do another quick drill leaving 0.2 mm and then finish with a reamer.
      With boring you save some time, but if you don’t have it you can do like this.

    If you want to move things up another notch, then after boring slightly undersize, I sometimes roller burnish to finish. Roller burnishing is a cold forming process that takes the precision and surface finish to another level, very much application dependent but for some jobs it can't be beat.

    You should never put a reamer into a drilled hole . You are correct that it will follow the drill. If you true up the hole first before the reamer then your reamer should provide an exceptional hole. I suggest truing the hole with a fishtail, not by interpretation.

    For 1 to 10 parts of non standard sizes and shapes, bore. For correcting rough, or eccentric holes, bore. For correcting taper and bell mouth, bore. Otherwise, ream, or use a Watts cutter, see if I care.

      Won't reamer also fix tapered hole?
      While not too stiff boring bar could also be deflected at the bottom of the hole if there is more material to cut.

      @@Stasiek_Zabojca it depends on the amount of taper on both counts. If there is a heavy amount of taper, it could make the reamer snap off in the hole. A boring head would not allow for that. Reamers are typically much faster than boring, but again, depends on tool life and ease of replacement.

    toolmaker for 30 years and I will always bore machine a pocket before reaming you just can't trust a drill

    One advantage of using reamers can be the hole depth, Boring heads will become unstable with too much stickout, and on small diameter holes reamers can still make very deep precision holes

    I was suprised there was no mention of position. I believe the boring head will provide a tighter positional tolerance than reaming a drilled hole.

    Nice to see this. I just bought a huge load of reamers on Ebay. Must be about 100kg or 220lbs. Many unused.

      I paid about £150 or $200 for hundreds of reamers. Mainly Morse taper 1 to 4.

    He is correct in as saying a reamer almost always follows the hole.

      Yep, when I had to hold .0002 locations on a reamed hole I had to center drill, pilot, drill, then make a slight counter bore with a 4/5 flute endmill for the reamer to be on location. Iv seen guys bend a reamer .062 to follow an off hole

      @@adammiller4879 if you give it enough shank length it will follow. If you choke up to much and make the reamer super rigid it will act like a boring bar. That's the only time a reamer does not follow a hole.

    Mapal has a high performance when feed can be explored also Romicron Boring heads are very accurate and easy to handle! Hanna Reamer too!

    As long as you drive an undersized endmill into a hole before reaming, it is more accurate than a borer. You can ream dowel holes pretty tight

      SOP I agree to an extent. If your trying to straighten out a hole that is way out of round an end mill will flex a bit trying to follow the hole. Nine times out of ten I would use a "reaming end mill", then a reamer.

    Helical interpolation is my go to.

      up until a point.
      IT6 or even IT7 can be difficult depending on how good of a machine you have and how well it's been set up. An expensive machine with good maintenance and the holes being small makes it easy. Long large holes you just can't adequately do with an endmill. For example, quadrant misalignment of a couple microns just ruins a nice interpolated hole. If it's deep they're also easy to make them tapered because your helical interpolation will unevenly wear out your mill. Expect the hole ontop to be slightly oversized because it's been touched by the top of the tool that has not seen a lot of wear compared to the bottom where the only contact point of the tool was the worn out end of the endmill.
      This topic is basically about ~10 micrometer size tolerance fields, long holes with a tolerance and strict geometric tolerances. Where the choice of tool can have a large impact.
      Anyone can do a shallow 8 H7 on a decent machine with an endmill. That's not an issue.

      this is true but if the machine is new and the cutter is new and the material is soft its no big deal. for long bores i use shortest flute lengths and helical from top to bottom

    I spoke with representitive of Kaiser boring heads : Not only reamers have a fixed size ...he said. Me :?????
    We ship literallly hundreds of pounds per month to ASML where a boring head is set to a specific size . And its left ALWAYS at that size as precision at ASML is very important!!!!

    The choice between a reamer or a boring head depends on a large range of paramaters (machine, qty of parts to produce, accuracy needed for the final hole, depth, size …) it’ sa large part of my job everyday with my customers : making the best choice !!!

    How does tool life differ between readers and boring heads? I was told a reamer I looked at could go 45,000 inches without losing tolerance of about 1 thou. Boring head the same?

    Yep it can. In the airlines as a machinist on small parts and having .000. -.0003 tolerance. Reamer is the answer.. simple

      A reamer can't hold a .0003 tolerance. What are you talking about? if it's less than .001, I want to use a bore.

      @@gredangeo then it's operator error. A boring head always has pushoff and deflection to worry with. I like them better myself, but a reamer in a properly drilled hole will always cut the same, as long as material consistency is very similar and tool edge is still in good condition. I will say that Kaiser are among the best there is that I've gotten to use. They usually cut dead nuts what you dial out depending on insert used. 👍

      @@gredangeo wanna bet. Back of the reamer is ground to a given size. Reamer is pulled through backwards by hand.. ON THE AIRCRAFT sometimes yo cannot put the mart in a machine. It has to be done on the actual aircraft. And your darn right it will. Its all about the setup and operator.

    Any thoughts on if it’s worth it to run floating tool holders for reaming? I am making precision bores for bearing fits, they are shallow, under 1” diameter and cut in aluminum

      Very shallow, 4mm deep on a 23mm diameter and 4mm deep on a 15mm diameter. I have 3 precision bores in a production setting, I can either buy 5k worth of boring heads or $500 in reamers. I have one micro boring head and 2 short reamers bought for it so far.

    Reamers and boring heads are both good for tight tolerance holes but reamers tend to be unreliable for optimal surface finishes whereas boring heads will consistently produce reliable finishes.

    one new guy wouldn't give a good solid pull, and kept destroying the tools I ran a drill press reamed 4 hours a day one summer.
