  • Waldorf has today released the Iridium Synthesizer, an all-digital desktop version of the Quantum. Iridium has 16 voices and features the same powerful synthesis engine (virtual analog, wavetable, granular, sampling, resonator, kernel engine...) as Quantum but without the analog filter section.
    Also new are CV connections, 16 pad controllers, and a brand-new digital filter section. Here is a first look with Rolf Wöhrmann, the developer of the Iridium.

    Thanks for this Q&A session. This is a fantastic future forward thinking synth, the MPE support on the list takes it to another level but it is already incredibly feature packed. Waldorf is listening to the community and it’s loyal customers and it shows in this product which will continue to be supported and updated in the future.🖤

    Alessandro Cortini had a AMA on reddit not too long ago. I asked him what his favorite modern synth was and he said, "Waldorf Quantum hands down." As if I needed more reasons to love the man! The Quantum looks so awesome but I'm glad the Iridium exists.

    I knew fans would be excited for this, driven by the exceptional price point. I'm really excited for a Blofeld Keyboard replacement too. I'm sure, due to the price and features, that the Iridium will do ok for the price bracket it fits within. I was expecting a Blofeld replacement synth first. Watching this though, I'm pretty sure a Blofeld will be based on a similar OS, albeit scaled-down to run on cheaper internal hardware. #GOWALDORF

    Groundbreaking thing. That's for sure. However, no digital I/O connections. No USB audio. On top no possibility to send/receive samples over USB to a host computer...why ? I think this is a huge missed opportunity for a +2K desktop synth. Roland V-synth XT has this features and was released 15 years ago...

    "Same as Quantum but without the analog filter section. " I won't be looking at this any further. I thought it sounded oddly sterile compared to the Quantum but I figured it was just the nature of the UA-cam demos. I'll take 8 less voices BUT with analog filters. Besides, the Quantum physical design is gorgeous.

  • @MadelnMachines
    @MadelnMachines 4 роки тому +2

    I think the synth is a great idea but i'm not sure the design is right. The potentiometer spacing doesn't seem ergonomic - it looks like you don't have space to fit your fingers in between them. Perhaps the case should have been bigger? Similarly reaching over all of the controls to get to the touch screen and pads doesn't seem ideal. When you are trying to play the pads you cover half of the potentiometers with your arm so you can't tweak them or accidentally touch them and it's not a comfortable position. Wouldn't these two elements be better at the bottom of the unit instead? I'm not sure whether to mourn the loss of the analog filters (did they really add that much in character anyway?) or be happy for the extra voices and modulation.

    • @steveh9799
      @steveh9799 4 роки тому +1

      I thought the same too until I realised having the screen and pads at the bottom would mean you would probably end up accidentally touching the screen and changing things far more than you think and would probably get very irritating after awhile... same with the pads.

    • @alanwomack9948
      @alanwomack9948 3 роки тому +1

      Well you couldn’t use the analog filters in stereo, it would just sum everything to mono, so people asked to leave them out and up the voices, which is a better choice, the digital filters were better anyway

      Hi the Waldorf will sounds more digital not necessarily cold but in my experience owning a blofeld a very solid surgical sound kind of precise not harsh or brittle it will be capable of a wide range of sounds but it will need work to get it there. The udo is analog it will do analog sounds easily like a classic poly synth similar
      To prophets or Jupiter synths of course it will also be capable of a range of sounds also - in my experience you just have to get one or the other and see if it’s for you.

      I’m not sure that it’s too expensive. When you think about the R&D to get to this place, the man hours involved, materials used and continued updates and support for the operating system. Then look at what a standard touch screen mobile phone costs these days and compare it to this beast then I think it’s not overpriced, would I like to pay less, of course, but I understand the effort it must take to get the synth out into the world. But that’s just my thoughts.

    • @synthanatomy

      @sbmphr there was more to do than repackaging it in a different case. They made modifications to the synth that take longer. Waldorf Synths are made in Germany in the same factory as the Access Virus and Kemper Profiler. They use high-quality components that are rock solid. You can get LCD display even for less than $50 but the point is how to implement it correctly with engine. That's long work.
