- The mighty combine is back and its time to get our 2023 canola crop harvested. I also try to get the draper drive motor repaired on the header front repaired while dad is busy harvesting.

One thing we have all learnt the hard way Henry is you won’t pick up canola going backwards. You always have to follow the way the windrower cut the crop. Also your bottom sieve has to be shut, not just partly shut.

Bottom sieve needs to be closed up completely , it still has holes so works perfectly.
You really need a adjustable precleaner for canola and you close it up completely.
The cleaning fan needs to be at the slowest , we run around 500 revs but I think the slowest for the 70 series is around 650.
Chopper needs to be on slow speed because it will draw air and create to much wind.
These machines were primarily built for corn and canola was a after thought so mods were needed to make them right for canola.
Your feederhouse slipclutch needs stronger springs (8 of) and don't grease it at all.
You should be able to get at least 20 tonne per hour with less than 1% admixture if you set them up that way.
If you have to turn your fan speed up any higher than 550 -600 to get a clean sample, then you will lose grain out the back.

Go the same way as the windrower. Feeder chain in slow feeding accelerator on fast and feed drum up...do a loaded shut down to see how many filler plates you need to load the sive evenly. 2 rows left one row right side at least.. on rear separator grates.

Regarding the hydraulic ram. When weight is left on a hydraulic ram for a period of time with both ports blocked off, a force called pressure intensification can occur. What happens, is that as the weight tries to retract the rod into the cylinder, (but can't because there is nowhere for the oil to go) oil will slowly leak past the piston seals inside the cylinder. As this oil moves from the big end to the rod end, the area available for this extra oil decreases. As per laws of physics, the load is constant and the area is decreased, therefore the pressure will increase. Sometimes to catastrophic levels. This is why it takes a while to happen.
Good practice is to take all the weight off any hydraulic equipment whenever possible. (John Deere headers excepted, due to single acting hydraulic rams, it can't happen) Any reason why you need to leave the tynes off the ground?
If you have an adjustable pre-cleaner close it right down it will improve your sample.
Go the same way as the way it was windrowed otherwise the front will not pick it up. If you go the wrong way the fingers can't grab the storks. Go the other way they grab the pods first and will feed in no worries.
I have found JOHN DEERE's are great for harvesting most crops including canola !!! ,as others have said ,have to go the same direction as the windrower went !! good video :)
25' swaths for that front was likely design criteria as they are quite old.

You probably still have a ways to go before all your breakdowns are out of the way, just the way it goes it seems. But just think, eventually you will be smooth sailing again. 😂

You guessed 40 and it was 39.34. And you call yourself a farmer. By the way for what is worth, shut the pre cleaner and botttom riddle and if it’s really fit then slow the drum down. Run as much blast as you can until you’re unhappy with the losses
You are feeding in the wrong direction
