One of my all time favorites along with Beltran, beyond what they did for the Mets. He was so damn good and even after looking at his numbers in the past before seeing this, I didn’t realize he was only a 2x All-Star. CRIMINALLY underrated!
He was so good on the 06 Mets and I thought he’d be a HOF for sure. He could absolutely rake.
As a lifelong braves fan i hated that 06 mets team they had so many great hitters...I'll never forget being 12 years old having the privelege of watching a 4 game series between them and the braves just to watch the mets sweep and Delgado and beltran each hit a grand slam in the same inning one game
I have such fond memories of that team, to this day I feel like that was our best lineup in my lifetime, and I'm still upset they only got one postseason trip out of it
As a young Phillies fan I remember Delgado being absolutely terrifying and yet a player I admired when he was with the Mets, that despite the Phillies having a young Ryan Howard who was historically good himself for his first couple of years, who succeeded one of my all time favorite players in Jim Thome.
Like other non-Mets fans' sentiments, I was in a similar position, though my time was more in his dominance of my Mariners early 2000s. Because of his absolute dominance of our pitching, he was a consistent target from fans as the bat to pursue.
In his FA season after 2004, though, he wanted more of a sure competitor than the just-collapsed Mariners and was willing to wait out the market. Upper management of the M's, however, wanted to move fast for their FA acquisitions for that year... and... weren't nearly as close to competing as they led themselves into believing.
The MLB Power Pros music sent me back to 2008. One of my favorite players on the Mets around that time!
Power Pros and MVP Baseball 04/05 are a huge reason I first got into baseball as a kid. I remember that create-a-player (Road to the Show esque) mode in Power Pros and feeling so defeated when I got cut once and my career ended. So much nostalgia between those three games.
What always got me about Delgado was how sweet and effortless his swing was, yet so much power.

Thank you for doing this video. He was my childhood hero. I was heartbroken when he left the Jays (I was a kid... I didn't understand free agency) and i was shocked when he was dismissed so quickly from HOF contention. Like you said, I hope he gets in like McGriff. 👏

Delgado should absolutely be in the Hall, if that injury in 2009 didn't end his career he definitely would've reached 500 homers and maybe could've even reached 600 and gotten in on the first-ballot.
He was like 37 years old when that injury happened, he definitely could've hit 500 but almost no way in hell he gets to 600. Definitely belongs in the HOF though. Him and Jim Edmonds are probably the biggest non steroid HoF snubs from that era.
If McGriff is in than Delgado should be in (they both should be)
Y'all are high. Delgado is nowhere near the HoF. He's like not even one of the top 50 first baseman ever. Delgado is basically Mark Texiera with worse defence and nobody anywhere thinks Mark Texiera is a a hall of famer.

Carlos was the reason I fell in love with baseball. He played for my hometown in Syracuse and was close enough to go see him in Toronto every year. When he was on the Mets, I was able to watch my favorite player every night on SNY. Now I’m a lifetime Mets fan and hope to work in baseball, really because of him. Been saying this for years. He should be in the hall!

I saw Delgado hit 3 hrs in a game against the Rangers in 98. Was my 1st MLB game to go to.

As a Jays fan, he was a treat to watch. Such a shame we wasted the years we had him and Halladay.
I concur as a fellow Jays fan. It didn't help that we had Gord Ash (and then JP Ricciardi) as our GM.
In all fairness... that Division was brutal during Delgado's prime and the Jays didn't have the Budget nor the Market to recruit superstars like the Red Sox and Yankees. I think they made the right decision to invest in the Farm System and emphasize their player development in the D.R which is why they are able to compete today without big free agent signings on a limited budget. Had they Not done that, they would be as bad as the Angels or Pirates. Not saying those GMs were good but just another viewpoint
@@user-zlxelaZz You are correct that Boston and New York dominated the AL East mainly due to their payroll stranglehold at that time. However, there were a few great seasons that the Jays had between 1998-2008, which could've resulted in a playoff berth or two had Ash or Ricciardi supplemented the roster with trade deadline acquisitions that would've put the Jays over the hump (obviously not an expensive player as the payroll wasn't there) and many of the moves they made in general hurt the team long term (trading away Michael Young was the most glaring move). I'm glad that "Shatkins" have finally turned the culture of this team in the right direction.
@@KardiFan2000 You have great memory and I was very surprised by the limited success of Ricciardi since he was part of Beane's core circle of baseball analytics and they over-achieved with a limited budget & market. But then you see the success of his predecessor Alex Anthopoulous which makes me curiously wonder how he could be sandwiched by 2 award winning GM's but have limited results during his tenure? Was it the Ownership? The "Steroid era?" that contaminated stats but if so how did they succeed in Oakland under that same period? Did his system/mgmt need more time to yield results since the Team was an early adopter of Sabermetrics? So much promise/potential with his hire but ended in mediocre results. Nevertheless, MLB was in its heyday and it was both a pleasure and disappointment to see how much it has fallen. Low ratings, politically influenced decision making and the budget disparity has just grown even greater. Its amazing how the Rays and Guardians can stay competitive which gives the Jays hope that they can always be a contender in the AL.
I have a baseball card from when I was a child (of me) and I had Carlos Delgado as my favorite player because he was an up and comer and also a catcher. One of the best players in Jays history!
Went to a mariners vs blue jays game at safeco when I was a kid and he signed a baseball for me and gave me a fist bump something I'll never forget he was my fav baseball player growing up too

2006-2008 Mets was a blast to watch BP. Beltran/Delgado/Green/Wright/Floyd. They would all hit absolute missiles.
THE TEAM THE TIME
Growing up a Yankees fan in Toronto I had no shortage of respect for him. He was also one of the few baseball players who spoke out against on-field militarism and the Iraq war. I don't know if he's not in the Hall because he's underrated though. In the age of WAR it's harder for slugging first basemen to get into the hall, because their defence and speed is factored against them.
I wholeheartedly agree. He was a legend and the only reason he isn’t recognized as such is because he played for the Jays when we were in our darkest times. He should have been the second HoF with our hat on its plaque.
Alomar and Delgado two of the greatest Puerto Rican and Blue Jays players of all time there needs to be a push for Carlos to the HoF

Not to mention he is an amazingly humble guy. My friend was the ball boy for the Mets and he took me into the clubhouse. Delgado shook my hand and actually said "I'm Carlos".
In the game MVP Baseball 2004, he is one of my favorite players to use.
Good video choice my dude. I pulled up his numbers when McGriff got in the HoF and was shocked at how similar they were actually. Carlos was a very underrated masher.

Me and my dad still talk about how great Del-got-it was. I loved watching him play on the Jays or Mets and miss his style of 1b. Great vid Jolly. Would love to see one like this about Alfonso Soriano btw. I know you did one about his 40-40 season but his whole career numbers are crazy

I remember getting his jersey when I was a young Blue Jays fan. The place that embroidered it put DEGALDO on the back and I was furious haha. Got that fixed. Him, Shawn Green and Doc Halladay were my heroes growing up. Loved the video and it's a joke he isn't in the HOF!

One of the players that made me appreciate baseball as a whole growing up, really the first out of market player that I really came to enjoy. Glad you made this video, hopefully more people continue to appreciate what he did
Sorry to say, but I think part of the reason he missed out on HOF consideration etc. was for his political views. The guy was openly critical of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in a time where that was rather unfashionable. He also stood up against the US training base in Vieques, PR, which also got on some nerves. So much for freedom of speech and all that.
I always thought the HOF writers (especially in certain markets) punished him for choosing to sit in the dugout during "God Bless America". I went to a Blue Jays game in NY in 2004 and I heard a little boy call him "evil" 😄. Here in PR we're proud of him and he'll always be a HOFer to us! 🇵🇷

Lisa's husband, Andy here. I am from the UK, I am, however, a baseball fan and was lucky enough in 2003 to get a trip to Toronto and go and watch the Jays. One of the reasons was to see Delgado. Many people go on about homers but his RBI records were amazing. Unfortunately, he played at a time when the Blue Jays were being carried by Delgado and Roy Halliday. Some of the other guys were useful but they were seriously lacking in strength in depth at that time, whereas, the Yankees had a galaxy of stars and the Red Sox were beginning to rise again. I think that's why he was overlooked. To me he is up there with my heroes of sport, Kevin Keegan (football/soccer), Dan Marino (NFL), Mats Sundin (hockey), and Mal Meninga (Rugby League). GO JAYS 👍💙 I pleased you are giving him recognition because if he was a Yankee, Red Sox, Dodger or Giant he would have books written about him.
Yet another great video. I was thinking about him when McGriff finally got put through to the HOF. He will forever be one of the best players that Toronto had.

Man i am from puerto rico and he is one of my alltime favorite players he was a beast and deserves to be in the hall of fame! Side note got to meet him and he is a super nice and humble person he comes by every once in a while to eat in my restaurant such a respectfull person! Nice video big fan!!

Hopefully the veterans committee or whatever they are called now will give him a second chance like Fred Mcgriff. Dude is highly underrated.

I remember him playing for the Jays when I was a kid. I remember jumping up and down at the bullpen with the other kids trying to get a ball from him. Never got one, but it was always exciting the few times I did go to a Jays game.
Great video. I didn't even realize how great he was, but he definitely got screwed out of the Hall. Side-note, I noticed Bobby Abreu on there as one of the 4 players during that 2000-2003 span to walk over 100 each season. You should do a video on him too! In my opinion, he is also criminally underrated. 288 homers and 400 walks, a pair of 30-30 seasons, never had a season below 5.2 bWAR between 1998-2004, and almost 16 more WAR over Delgado, while only having 1 Silver Slugger, 1 Gold Glove (not really sure how he won it in 2005, though.) and only 2 All-Star appearances. If Delgado should be in the Hall, Abreu deserves a conversation about it too.

I loved Delgado, even if I was afraid of him coming to bat if he was playing my team. Always a favorite in my neighborhood growing up too!
I’ve been on the Delgado HOF train for a while now. Look up his stats compared to Fred McGriff. Very similar careers.
As a Jays fan, it hurts to see the team fail to rally around Delgado, insane stint he had. Also the MLB Power Pros music is an elite choice.
Small correction. Delgado did not move to left field in the minors. He made the switch at the major league level. In 1994, they moved him to left and he played over 80 games there. Trying to learn a different position in the majors caused his bat to fall off so he was sent down to work on both. If they had have left him down to make the switch to LF and come up when he was ready, he likely would have spent most of his career there and likely would be in the HoF. Awesome video though. I glad to see someone recognize what this man did for baseball. He was also an exemplary human being.

I never grew up watching him but he will always be one of my favorite players and in my opinion the most underrated player ever
I was never a fan of the teams he played for but I enjoyed watching him play and always thought he was a really good player but your video showed me how much better he was! It really shows that the voters for the Hall of Fame don't do their homework and research players. There's no reason he shouldn't have received enough votes.

I suspect it also didn't help he was 1) in Canada and 2) in the AL East with the ESPN circle jerk known as Boston/Yankees. If he were in LA, Chicago, hell even Houston, I suspect he would have had more recognition
I truly don't understand how CD isn't in the HOF. Him and Steib are both worthy of being in.
If you're a fan of Stieb, check out the 4 part documentary of him by Jon Bois. Incredible series and shows how dominant he was on the early 80's.
Carlos Delgado is my favourite hitter of all time and I'm pretty certain the only reason he's not in the Hall today is because of the 7th inning "stand" he took in support of Puerto Rico. It's hip to do that kinda stuff today, but back then he was absolutely vilified for it.
I remember being at the sky dome as a teenager that first April that he started the season after coming up. He hit a monster homerun, like almost 500 level huge. And I thought this guys a star. He killed it that April then got bad🤣 but he straightened it out obviously.
Been a Blue Jays fan for a long time and Delgado is one of my favorites. I feel like he’d be in the hall if Gary Sheffield wasn’t also on the outside looking in. Hopefully he gets a serious look from whatever veterans committee handles his era. If Toronto hadn’t been run by an incompetent owner and front office during his time, he’d have so much more.

It was fun watching Delgado. Before teams had tablets in the dugout, Delgado would always be seen with a pen and little book after every at-bat taking notes. Very cerebral player.

Amazing video. Delgado is easily the biggest hall of fame snub currently. A question I’d like to ask is if he did get voted in by the veterans committee, who would he go in as? A Jay or a Met? (I’m gonna exclude the Marlins cause of his shorter time spent there). I’m a Jays fan so I’m a bit bias to him going in for us, and even though I was only 2 years old when he left Toronto, still growing up hearing about all the franchise records he holds makes me see him as arguably the best player in franchise history. Still he was good in NY and made the playoffs. I would be very excited to see another player go in to the hall of fame as a Jay, but overall, this man was a great ball player, seems like a caring and good hearted person who deserves the best of the best. So just the idea of him getting in would make me feel very happy for him.
Delgado carried the Blue Jays for years. Then he went to Queens near the end of his prime and didn't miss a beat. That hardly ever happens. Normally, big time players flounder in NY for at least one year. What a beast. The numbers speak for themselves.

McGriff, Stieb and Carlos may have been the most overlooked trio of overlooked players, all jays. One aleady got his due.

@@michaeladams5636 I love Joe for his clutch HRs and hits, for being at the center of every division, ALCS, and WS clinching moment during the Jays' dynasty...but I don't think he's a HOFer. 19.5 WAR in 16 seasons is pretty mediocre.

@@michaeladams5636 Then explain why every other All-Star outfielder in his era was a statistically-better hitter and defender than he was? Even if we don't use WAR... .306 career OBP, .771 career OPS, 102 career wRC+ (meaning he was only 2% better than average as a hitter), 71 runs below average on defense...his HOF case just isn't good enough.
