Steadtler graphite pencils is what I use most. This is a drawing demo on the 2B, 4B, and 6B so you can see the difference in each.

I've been watching "how to shade" type videos, and I get the point. I get kinda jealous when all these artists use fancy sletching tools when I only have a mechanical pencil and the eraser. I'm glad that I'm up to this level of sketching and shanding for my age, but I need a lot more practice. I wish I had some paints or some of those sketching pencils. I'm glad I found your videos.

Oh believe me, you DON'T need fancy materials. It's all about skills with any tools. Sure some tools will make it easier for certain things but nothing beats good skills.

It also depends on how large you are drawing. Or how much you favour pure cross shading vs "tonal" shading. Mind you, lead holders are sometimes colloquially called mechanical pencils, in which case the lead would be the same with as the one of a traditional pencil.

Recently bought a professional drawing kit and now I know what I can expect from it thanks to Art of Wei's UA-cam channel.
I must add that although I knew about the pencil's grading scale, as a total newbie in the subject when I rode HB, 2H, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B in them I was totally confused since I did not know nothing about them... Until I saw this video.

The 4B looks better for the exterior eye but the 6B created a more realistic, smoother iris and pupil. Definitely see the benefit of combining them.

I prefer Derwent and Prisma Ebonys together. I find they're smoother, if that makes sense. Of course I've used plain ole' No.2's in a lot of projects and got decent results as well. It really just depends on my subject and the look I'm going for.

+mcapps1 Yes, absolutely, the medium has to suite the project. I've had some bad experience with Derwent pencils. They keep chipping off every so often. It was nuts. Maybe I just had a pack of pencils or something, but it was bad. It was less expensive than the Steadtler.

Lead holders are also better for the environment :) The Staedtler mars technico lead holder is the best iv ever used personally although Koh I Noor have some good ones too.

wei : use 2b as lightly as possible to fill in the light part
school : USE YOUR 2 B AND DARKEN THE CIRCLE AS DARK AS POSSIBLE (for those who dont know there are a computer scanning techniques to check answer easily but we, student have to suffer darkening the cicle so it could be scanned)
