  • A study of a humbling and healing worship passage in Romans. This song is beautiful in how it is the overflow of theology into worship. As we study it we learn how to humbly trust in God’s goodness, knowledge and wisdom. We take note of how important worship is in the Church as well as learning some priceless lessons about not thinking we know more than we do and letting God’s glory be our ultimate purpose.

You have a good point. If you sing a lyric in a worship song that you don't agree with, you could be inadvertently teaching someone false doctrine. And no Christian wants to do this.

As someone who raised singing in choirs, specifically African American gospel music, I noticed when I would hear silly songs with a gospel tune and feel some sort of “worship centered” emotion similar to what I would feel in church, I knew something was wrong lol. So much focused on the emotional aspect of the music as opposed to the purpose of singing the song in the first place (worshipping God).

This is my favorite passage in the entire Bible.
Before today, I had never heard anybody preach or teach it.
God-willing, I shall teach it in "Sunday school," the day after tomorrow.
By the way, is that Psalm 62:8 behind Mike? By God's grace, I set that verse to music, years ago.

Thank you so much for what you said about the music. I have been becoming more sensitive to this and sometimes wish I hadn't! I love a good mix of modern and traditional, but two things really bug me. A chorus of 3 words, repeated 4 times, then the chorus is repeated 2 or 3 times and all I hear in my head is "vain and useless repitition"! The other one is what I refer to is "Me worship" which is when the song is all about how I feel about God and really says nothing about His glory or His love or His majesty or any of His other atributes. I visited a church that I was very much interested in joining, but backed out because of this. The only line about God during worship was in the context of ME! "I will live in such a way that all will know that You alone are God and there is no other." Honestly, I could only take two weeks of that! I lived my life long enough just singing the songs, and praise God that somewhere along the way it actually became worship. I realize not everybody has the same journey, but this is how it came for me. It's good to hear someone else address it.

I remember back in the 90’s we were on our way home from church and my teenage daughter said that she didn’t like the songs we had been singing more and more of late, because (as she put it) ‘They sound like the sappy love songs you hear on the radio, only they’ve put the name of Jesus into them.’ I knew exactly what she meant and I agree absolutely.

51:00 that idea that God is vain to demand worship is well juxtaposed to the atheist's demand not just for his paycheck but that the paycheck be deposited into the right bank account... if an atheist demands proper credit for _his_ work, and surely any man's work would be less valuable than God's work, then God would surely have the right to demand the precise and proper credit for His work. In this regard, I compare the scriptures to an equivalent of a really long routing number...worship being the pay due to the creator, it must be properly deposited into the correct account according to the terms of service specified by the CREATOR.

The Church I "belong to" sings what I have come to call "goofy choruses." I don't mean to disrespect God, but sometimes I think, "If I have to sing one more of these choruses, I don't know what I'm going to do." I have started bringing my cellphone and ear buds. I never thought it would come to this. I have resorted to going to the Baptist Church down the street sometimes. I'm not a Baptist, but I like the old hymns and expository preaching. Also, they are friendly, growing, and they have an emphasis on evangelism. I wonder if going to 2 Churches is wrong??

@Carole Imani Hi! I went to a church that plays all the worship music that is played on Christian radio. I ended up switching churches to a baptist church as well because of the sound teachings- straight from the Bible and the worship music from what I can tell is sound. It was fresh air. I'm still confused about what denomination I am. I think instead of a label I'm just focusing on the Lord. Now I signed up for a Bible study Community Bible Study and they don't specify a denomination but those in charge get to pick the worship music. And last year it hurt me to be in the same room because instead of worshiping I'm nervous to, analyzing each lyric. The study is about to begin for this year. I asked my Bible study teacher to skip worship and I can see from her point of view it sounds so wrong. I tried to explain my reasoning that the worship music is not all biblically sound and those who produced the music practice things that is not of God. Anyway I had come up with the idea to bring my ear buds.

I agree that you shouldn't spend every waking hour trying to figure out God's wisdom and knowledge in a particular situation. However, if you have a lull in your life, you could spend that time trying to figure it out. You probably won't succeed, but it will give you something to do until the lull in your life is over. Who knows? It might keep you from committing a sin during your lull.

  • @speedlearner

Another good point. If you're singing about something that you don't practice yourself, you could appear to others as a hypocrite. And no Christian wants anyone to think they are a hypocrite.

That's because they are using worship songs as mnemonic devices. Of course I learned my mnemonic devices from the Memory Book by Harry Lorayne. So I don't need worship songs to memorize bible concepts.

I think that we should carefully take a listen to these worship songs but one thing that I see many people these days say or try to argue about these modern worship songs, is "Oh its too emotional" well Honestly I would say if you are in the presence of the Father literally the creator of our Universe ya know the one who died for us on the Cross even though he didn't need to do that but he still did because he saw worth in us by doing that. Yeah, That God, I would cry in the presence of my Savior who literally opened up eternity for me even though he didn't need to. Another thing, the emotional part I can get a bit but are we supposed to be robots singing songs that literally just say nothing, I think there are bad Christian songs just how there are bad foods. God gave us our emotions and for us to direct those emotions to praise his name, yeah again I would cry as well knowing that Im in the presence of the Savior of the World. (Some of you are probably Calvinist).

Thank you Pastor Mike fort this entire series on Romans; its very helpfull.
This particle one on worship is close to my heart as I'v been part of the worship team in 2 different church (I play the flute) and in my former church I was raising those concerns with the worship leaders, meaning we must be more carefull about the lyrics as God wants us to worship in spirit and in truth; and toward the end, the worship leader was picking songs more on feelings&emotions than biblical truth...not good.
So hearing this teaching is conforting and reassuring me that I'm understanding the Word of God.
    Thank you. God bless you.

Telling people what God's will is can be a terrible abuse. I once had a pastor tell me that I was destined to marry a girl I dated in that church for awhile and that God would work things out between us even though she had broken up with me. Yeah, that didn't work out, but it did make it more difficult for me to get through the emotions of the breakup. Looking back, I really wish that he had held his tongue. And I also wish that I'd had the wisdom not to listen to him.

Came across this when searching for what worship really is. Blessed teaching and was so accurate that true understanding of theology stirs within our hearts to worship God, which I ended up doing after you said to meditate on the knowledge and wisdom of God in the first verse. This teaching was confirmation. Hallelujah, thank you for using your gift that God's people may benefit from it and glorify God because of it.

Here after checking out another church in town. My ears and body said enough after 3mins of highly amplified music where I couldn't understand the lyrics. I felt physically nauseate, my ears still hurt. As you point out elsewhere, music is a vehicle to change how church functions and what it believes. Dangerous stuff.
In God's wisdom he led me to listen to your teaching and it really helped me see my need to be both less critical and more aware of how to worship God theologically and (hopefully Jesus-led emotionally) . Praise God for whom all blessings flow.

I struggle with what may be labeled "asceticism," when I think about denying myself and picking up my cross. I struggle with understanding what it truly means to give my "all" to Jesus. I want to glorify Him in all that I do. I want Him to strip me of my own selfishness. But I question if any recreation could truly be for God's glory? Movies (even those that are wholesome), hiking in nature, wildlife photography (one of my hobbies), enjoying foods and drinks, etc. I understand that recreation is a gift God gave us, but that it cannot become an idol. I understand, too, that He planted desires in my heart and gave me taste buds to enjoy food and pleasure, but that it cannot come above Him. I am thinking that trying to cut all of these good gifts out would not be biblical either, but it's something I'm wrestling with because some days, I question how I could bring God glory by watching a baseball game or going on a road trip or getting a coffee from my favorite coffee shop. I try to trust in Him and His timing, knowing that He will show me the gifts and calling on my life. If I abide in Him, I will bear fruit in patience. I'm just having a hard time reconciling the things we do in this life for our own selves... does that glorify God in some way? In our saving up for a house, in our gardening, in our activities that bring us joy? I know true joy comes from God and that all of this is meaningless without Him as our focus. Any Scriptures, advice, or studies that you could point me to would be amazing!

The old hymns were (often, but not always) written with the idea of Theological truths being ingrained within them. The Wesleys did this and so did many others. This is why I have always loved many of the old humans, as they are so full of biblical truth. I also love worship songs that are basically a portion of scripture put to music. I DON’T like songs that are just one or two words repeated over and over, then the chorus is another word or two repeated over and over, then back ton another word or two repeated over and over. Someone I spoke to about this objected that I was being too critical and why did I say this? The song was basically, the name of Jesus, repeated for the first verse, then another verse that was just the word; Father, repeated over and over, and so on. And on! I replied that if someone wrote a love song to his wife that was just her name rpeated over and over, she would probably hit him with something handy after one or two minutes, because it becomes banal and meaningless. Perhaps I was being harsh, but I think I’m fairly safe in saying this, butf any ladies out there disagree, I’m all ears.
On a more serious note, I know that one church in particular has a method of writing worship songs that are full of their particular (unbiblical) doctrines, for the express reason that they know that if they can get people to sing their songs, those people will slowly be infused with unbiblical teachings, that they would otherwise reject as false doctrine. This is a very wicked goal and I will not ever sing one of their songs as a result of this kind of deception.

I would think the reason they were singing my name over and over again was because they never paid any attention to me or cared to know me. I would think that if they really loved me and cared about me they would have plenty of words to say besides my name. I would think the relationship was in trouble. That question makes ya think.😮

I have learned so much by listening to you, Mike. But here I feel like you missed an opportunity. I get that you are a musician. But WORSHIP and music are two distinctly different things. Worship entails a life wholly dedicated to the Lord, which seeks to bring every aspect of yourself into obedience and praise. Music is simply a wonderful tool which may be used to worship our God through praise to Him and edification of His church. To use the word “Worship” as if it’s synonymous with Christian music, or synonymous with the time in a church service when we use music to minister and to praise God, we rob the word “Worship” of so much richness. Every area of our lives should is to be part of our worship. A word study of the word reveals how completely God wants us to worship Him. Not only with music, which it’s sadly, in the current church culture, dwindling down to.

Ok. Mike at 22:00 you advocate for God's wisdom over the world's wisdom, and you rebuke pandering .. "I don't Jesus doing that, I don't see God doing that, in the text so why would I do that". So I sincerely challenge you, as a sister, that you have literally confused politics with the gospel and thereby confused the children of God with Satan's children and though you are solid on many things, this issue about antichrist, you can not afford to mess up:
    1. Micah 2:6 and Matthew 5:2 *STRICTLY* define "Israel" as God's people _governed_ by the Shepherd from Bethlehem... that shepherd is Jesus Christ _not_ Bengurion. You MUST use biblical definitions for God's words. It is NOT the blood of Jacob that EVER saved anyone, it has *_always been the blood of the Lamb_*
    2. Jesus said unto them, "If God were your Father, *ye would love me* : for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. *Ye are of your father the devil* and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8
    3. "I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you." "For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel"
    4. in fact *Jesus warns us twice* that those who say they are of the tribe of Judah but do lie, are of Satan"
That temple was not destroyed by accident Mike: Who can know, 1900y after the destruction of the temple, that they are of Judah?? A Jew has ALWAYS meant "of Judah" God NEVER started a unique Kabbalah Talmud religion, _Satan_ did. God is not messing around here Mike.
and just to DRIVE this point home... Jesus says He is not come to save the "lost sheep of the House of Israel" in Matthew 15:22-28 ... so why does He proceed to heal a daughter of _Canaan_ ??? Keep reading... SHE WORSHIPS HIM... and then she surrenders to HIS LORDSHIP.. (comparing herself to a dog at her master's table)
