I've watched so many videos on making sourdough and none of them even touched on the thought of maybe not having a banneton! Plus the tip on getting the stuck towel off?! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Your tips came right on time for me as I had been hesitating whether to buy or worth to buy a banetton for one purpose because if it’s price. Thank you for sharing your ideas 🙏
Brilliant! I'm a self-taught baker and I learned so much from Teresa Greenway's videos - from building a sourdough starter (from scratch) to making bread! Thank you
Thank you for your tips! I am in the learning process of making bread :) Watched so many videos on how to make bread and you are the first person who explains why we need to place bread in cloth for the last proofing.
Thank you Teresa! UA-cam recommended this video. And I'm so glad I clicked it. I've been watching a lot of Bake With Jack videos and recently started making my own sourdough. But I don't have a banneton so I'd been using unlined bowls. Your tips for using everyday kitchen items will make my life so much easier! 🧡
Thank you for making this video. Especially this year when people are home and wanting to bake breads but may not currently have the resources to spend on bannetons. It was very nice of you to share those ideas. I have a round banneton for a boule. Your video gave me some ideas for baking some different shaped breads that I currently can not do.
Thank you for all the info. I'm a new bread baker and don't have a lot of the nice gadgets that I see in some videos.... so thank you for sharing that there are other ways to get the same results.
Thank you so much for sharing these creative alternatives. This video was so helpful for me as I'm going to attempt my first sourdough but don't have a banneton on hand
Thanks for your ideas and theniques for resolve problems, I am a spanish speaker with minimal english and i can understand you perfectly. I enjoy you video.
Nice! I didn't know you could lightly spray a loaf to release it from cloth that's stuck to the dough. And you handled the razor cutting more assertively than I thought was okay. Your short tutorial was so helpful to this beginner. I also found some of the same containers in our kitchen like the straw bowls that rarely get used. They'll be in service often, now!
Teresa me encantan tus videos! No hablo inglés, seria genial que les pongas subtítulos al español! Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos... abrazo desde Argentina
Thank you very much. Your explanation is very useful for me that I’m a newei in this. I tried several times to make a sourdough started but I gave up, I even got the bannetons and some other equipment. It was now with the locked down that I have more time to navigate and I started to see UA-cam and I finally got the idea how to make the starter. I actually have one and have made several breads, I’m not satisfied with the spring and other things, like it’s still too sour. I hope I can master it. I’ll take a look at your other videos. I’m impressed with your expertise in this video. Thanks again!
Thanks! It was really useful advice! I was considering buying an expensive bannetton, and after watching your video, I just used a colinder, and it went great!
Thank you so much for this informative video I made my first sourdough bread yesterday using a bowl and a towel and lots of flour but I sure wish I had watched your video yesterday before baking! It really stuck so I improvised but it wasn’t pretty. Thanks to you my next loaf will be much better.
Wow, great tips!! I’ve made 18 loaves now and the little issues I come across are annoying!! Like sticking in my banneton or bowl lined with a towel. Thanks for addressing this specific issue.
I bought restaurant-style polypropylene woven faux wicker bread baskets (round and oval) I got on Amazon, and lined them with 20"x20" linen napkins from Target. They work GREAT but you don't get the spiral markings like from Rattan bannetons. I don't mind, because I don't like those grooves in my loaves anyway. I got six bannetons this way, and 12 linen napkins for less than 2 rattan bannetons go for these days--and I got them in less than a week, and the baskets are dishwasher safe!
I love bannetons because of the ridges it creates on my loaf. Have just bought 4 used from an ebay seller - 2 round and 2 oval because I want to attempt to bake 4 loaves at one time - they then get sliced and go in the freezer.
I Use one and two liter yogurt containers. Never used bannetons. Nice round loaves, just wrap the dough in a tea towel or similar. A two liter container is just great for a 500-600g loaf.
Most of my sourdough has never required a Benneton/ brotform. It comes clean out of a bowl ready for baking, i shape and bake. No pre shaping at all. Loaves come out formed nicely.
I'd get batard but didn't want a uni-tasker so I do my final proof in a parchment lined Romertoph that it bakes in. Now I'm seeing how the nice flour surface is created on the loaf.
Do you need to cover the dough for the final proof, after you place it in the "banneton"? If so, would you cover with plastic wrap or cloth, to be more breathable?
I don't recommend glass or plastic bowls because the trap moisture and cause sticking to the cloth. Even with LOTS of flower the I had this issue, especially with a long proof times (i.e. overnight, or longer in the fridge).
Hi!! Thank you for your tips! I am in this part right now. I do not have a banneton and i have checked online for costs. I do have two questions. Can i use a cheese cloth as well?? Or does it have to be a kitchen towel? My other question is. If i use the kitchen towel and i put my dough to ferment overnight, do i need to cover it up with the towel or let it open in the fridge? Thank you so very much!! I just started my starter a week ago. So i am new to everything.
I've watched so many videos on making sourdough and none of them even touched on the thought of maybe not having a banneton! Plus the tip on getting the stuck towel off?! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I had a similar thought while watching all these recipes! I agree, we really appreciate you giving so many creative options. Thank you!
@@darkeverythingbagel Thank you for the kinds words! :)

Thank you so much!
Really helpful tips on flattening the towel when flouring it and on releasing the stuck towel!
Brilliant! I'm a self-taught baker and I learned so much from Teresa Greenway's videos - from building a sourdough starter (from scratch) to making bread! Thank you
This is beautiful.
I'm so grateful for this video.
My first sourdough is finishing its bulk fermentation now.❤ I can shape it now.
Thank you for your tips! I am in the learning process of making bread :) Watched so many videos on how to make bread and you are the first person who explains why we need to place bread in cloth for the last proofing.
Thank you for all your tips! That last one about getting the stuck cloth off without ripping the dough is excellent! Thank you!
You're welcome :)
I use an Ikea table runner as a couche and it works like a charm!
Thank you Teresa!

Jack rocks!
Thank you for all the info! Wish I had seen your video first- so many tips on one place!
This video is very helpful!! A Benetton is not cheap for just one purpose. It gives the bread nice patterns tho.
I used a really nobly cloth, well floured of course, and it gave the loaf a really dry outside and a really interesting crust pattern. Looked great.
Great tips on just being creative and practical. Keep it simple.

Thank you. I'm just about to get started and looking to tool-up. Bannetons are more expensive than I thought they'd be. This helps!
Thank you so much for sharing these creative alternatives. This video was so helpful for me as I'm going to attempt my first sourdough but don't have a banneton on hand
I found that old plain tablecloths from the thrift store work well and are inexpensive.
Thanks for your work!
Thanks, Teresa, it was helpful. Good idea to sprinkle the flour before pooshing the towel in the basket!
What a wholesome video! Great work!
I use parchment paper and one of the round wicker baskets! All go right in the cast iron pot with lid .
Thank you for all the suggestions!
You're so welcome!

8:48 super bonus tip! : how to peel cloth out of your bread reducing the stickiness. (spray water in the outside of the cloth before peeling)
Thank you so much, you’ve saved my 10 sourdoughs that I’d forgotten to dust. I’ll be hunting for a spray bottle in the morning 🙏
Brilliant idea with the water.always had problems with the dough getting stuck
Thanks for the helpful video!

Great! This is wonderful as I have not be able to find ANY Bannetons! Yikes! Thank you for saving my life and my bread! :-)
I liked the oval baskets. Gave an idea to fold the sides a little to make a longer shape.
Don’t forget the stationary baskets. Plastic or metal. I have been using ziplock containers lined with parchment paper.
Brilliant tips. You don't need anything fancy to make bread/sourdough.
This video is really useful.
Thank you very much.👍👍👍

Do you cover it during the final rise? Or just let it out to the air?
Thank you!
