    Hey everyone! Have you ever had that burning motor oil smell in your car while you were driving on long trips? If so, then it’s probably because your Mercedes-benz has an old valve cover gasket that needs to be replaced. That’s not a problem because changing the valve cover gasket on the Mercedes-benz s500 M113 engine is super easy. After changing the valve cover gasket and valve vent hoses on your Mercedes-benz valve cover. I would recommend changing your Mercedes-benz valve cover gasket and hoses every 50,000 to 100,000 miles because the rubber can get hard and it makes the job easier if you change your valve cover gasket before the rubber gets hard. Alright, let’s roll up our sleeves and go to work!

    I have a 99 SL500 m113 one of the first things I did was removed the crankcase breather cover from valve cover cleaned out sludge and drilled out that hole you referenced with no negative consequences as far as I can tell. It’s a known mod in the M113 community. 50% recommend with logical mindset why you’d want to. 50% are old guys who say “MERCEDES DESIGNED IT WITH THAT SIZE HOLE FOR A REASON, ALTER IT AND YOUR CAR WILL IMPLODE KILLING YOU AND ANYONE WITHIN A 5 MILE RADIUS” so yeah. lol

    1- That attachment is called breather cover (it's the same thing as PCV valve in other cars, separates oil from the air)
    2- If that small hole gets blocked it causes multiple issues :
    a- P0047, P0104
    b- Once in a while the blockage would open on its own and it would suck in a bunch of oil which ends up straight in the intake
    3- Degreaser followed by tyre foam cleans these oil deposits really well

    Well I did the job, took two days for me. Cleaning parts was the longest part of the project. Changed oil as well and wiped up the oil on my undercarriage. This video was perfect, I had challenges with the hoses and watch more of the video and worked through it. Thank You a Bunch for posting this, PERFECTION.

      Congratulations Eric Thornton! Two days is normal. Usually you do one side and then finish the other side the next day. And yeah, those hoses can be a pain to remove haha. Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad this video could help.

    • @outofthinair1
      @outofthinair1 3 роки тому +5

      @@Menga213 I used the Mercedes approved gasket material. it's expensive, somewhat hard to get out of the tube and has a short working time but 4 months later no leaks. The most important thing to bear in mind is the cleaning of the gasket surfaces. Make sure they are totally clean no grease or old gasket material. It sounds easy but I spent about an hour on each valve cover. Make sure you follow the torque specs. Good luck with your project, and take your time,

      @@outofthinair1 When I took my valve cover bolts off they were barely tight-is this normal?

    • @outofthinair1
      @outofthinair1 3 роки тому +3

      @@sl5311 Totally normal, mine were loose as well. The engine heat, cool, cycles shrink and hardens the gaskets. It's not a horrible job , it's just time consuming. Make sure to replace the aluminum breather cover bolts. Good luck on your project.

    I'm doing the same job on my 99 SL500 based on your video. I going to suggest you put a rag or old shirt on top of the exhaust to avoid oil falling on it. And if it does, well, you're covered. No need to clean afterwards. Another thing I did when taking the fuel hose off. I cut a small piece of a plastic water bottle about 2" from the bottom and place it under neath the hose intake to collect the gas that will drain. As it gets full, plug the hose back up and drain the gas on the other half of the bottle. Of course, it will be up-side down, but it works. You will have a bit of spillage but you use the gas to clean the covers, specially where it's full of thick grease. I also cleaned the cover (s) with awesome cleaner which you can get at the 99 cent store. Thank you for posting your video and hope this will also ease a bit of the work and mess.

Unfortunately it does not fix my main issue of misfire on cylinder 7. Engine light came on and code says a misfire on cylinder 7 then I already did change the spark plug, fuel injector and ignition coil and the misfire and check engine light was fix but after a few days the engine misfires on cylinder 7 and the check engine light keeps coming back so i replaced the valve cover gasket with this helpful video and the check engine light and misfire on cyl 7 was fixed but after a few days the check engine light came back and misfire on cyl 7. I don't know what to check besides a compression test but i am not sure that will solve this. Your thoughts about this? Thank you very much.

    Excellent video I have a 2004 MB SLK 32 AMG I think I have a small valve cover leak, There is a bit of oily smoke after it gets heated up rising from under the hood. a little bit of weeping oil only from the bottom edge of the smaller valve cover that sits on top of the main valve cover on the drivers side. I removed all the top air intakes and the coil packs and confirmed that this seems to be the only leak. I thought of just tightening the small valve cover a bit more but didn't as it might just make the leak worse. Is it possible to only remove this smaller cover, clean up everything and reseal it without disturbing the main valve cover. Would you you do in this case is is it just better to remove all of it. The Right side valve cover seems to be fine. Since there is no factory gasket for this smaller valve cover piece on the left drivers side what is the best sealer to use for this ? Would you also still replace the two long top bolts that hold this piece with stainless. Thanks for the excellent video. SK Ohio

    • @GarageDynamics
      @GarageDynamics  Рік тому +1

      Hello Steve K, Thank you for the kind words :) It's possible to remove only the small top cover but it's possible that some of the silicone will fall into the main valve cover area while cleaning. If you are sure you can clean and replace the cover and not let debris fall into the valve cover then I say to make your decision on how confident you feel. Personally I would remove the whole valve cover and then clean the small cover very well, which is necessary for a proper seal when applying new sealant. Also, please do not tighten the valve cover bolts as this could possibly damage the threads. the main valve cover bolts have a torque rating of 9Nm and the small cover has a rating of 4Nm I believe. This is a very small amount of pressure. The small cover bolts are one time use bolts and over tightening them could damage the threads. The silicone that I use for the valve cover is VictorReinz Sealant: amzn.to/3Pz0ji1
      I hope this helps. Cheers!

    Does cross mixing different metals and scrubbing promote rust?

    • @GarageDynamics
      @GarageDynamics  2 роки тому

      Hello Andrew Weaver, Yes, the valve cover on the Mercedes-Benz S Class W220 is made of magnesium. This metal will react with other metals and certain chemicals. Stainless steel does not react with magnesium. Aluminum is safe to use as well, but carbon steel and copper will react. Keep in mind that magnesium is very brittle and harder metals can case damage if over torqued. When using a cleaning agent, it's import to use a mild soap without acid. I hope this helps. Cheers!
