About Me:
My bio is pretty random: In short, I am a professional singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada who moved to Manila, Philippines which sorta became my Hollywood because my first UA-cam channel MIKEYBUSTOSVIDEOS grew popular due to Filipino comedy videos. Meanwhile, I'm also a big biology geek who is obsessed with ants, so I built an internationally operating ant business supported by another popular channel called ANTSCANADA, and well basically, today I travel and tour around the world doing what I love so I wanted to start this vlogging channel, in hopes to encourage you guys to follow your dreams no matter how random, by showing you what happened when I followed mine! You just never know where life will take you when you listen to the yearnings of your heart!
My suggestion ...gawin nyo .instead of filling up the sloping soil...make it like Terracing landscaping like the one in Cordillera rice terraces and use adobe stones to avoid erosion during rainy seasons.

I was just thinking, a legit, old school Bahay Kubo nestled in the forest would be awesome. A perfect spot for a picnic!
Raising chickens IS easy. You just have to provide what they need which is food and safety. I never saw any low feeders for the chicks and no water close to the ground. Maybe you didn't show it but I only saw the chicks pecking at the bare dirt ground. Also, chicks need a special high protein grower feed, if they were out in the grass they would find bugs to eat but in the small pen the big chickens would eat any bugs before they could get them.
Agree about the cortisol Mikey. All those tools you mentioned about lowering cortisol are so true, as long as we make time in our day to do it. Plus staying away from stress-filled people creating drama. Laughter is a good lowering anxiety technique!
Hi! Just a suggestion. Try planting bignay trees. You can eat its delicious small fruits and could attract wild birds in your property. Birds love its fruit. ☺
And you can make delicious Bignay Wine! Or candied/preserves!

Raising chickens will get easier. Let the Silkies incubate their eggs, once the egg hatch separate them the mother and chicks from the restnof the flocks. The mother hen will be able to teach the chicks ways of
being chicken that humans cant do. And also what to eat to help them with their stomachs and health. I keep chickens at home and I’ve raised them both ways, with incubator and with their mother hens. It is so much easier if the mother hens do it. Just separate them until they are big enough to join the rest of your flock. They don’t need a big raising pen. 😊

May i suggest to add more native tree and plants to your tropical forest...there are a lot of native trees and plants that bear fruits and beautiful flowers. Hope these trees and plants will be included in beautifying your tropical forest. More power and positivity! ❤❤❤

Here is some tip for natural chicks raising.
The silkie hens should be used preferentially, as they are the best, calmer mothers. Golden hens are sometimes too nervous and can kill their chicks without doing it on purpose.
Against fire ants you should install the hen which incubates its eggs in a large plastic box of approximately 60x30 centimeters. Put a thin layer of fine dry sand on the entire bottom of the box, a small cup of water so that the chicks do not drown. You must transfer the hen with her eggs (6 to 8 maximum) and her straw nest into the box and above all leave her in the dark on her nest for at least a day before putting the light back on. You need a metallic mesh over the entire top of the box, to close it and to prevent the hen from escaping. Install the hen in her box in a quiet elevated place not in direct sun and away from the other hens.
The best is to install the open plastic box with the straw directly in your large henhouse to encourage your chickens to lay eggs in it, this box must be their main laying place (you can put several), so they will be used to it.
Then, once the chicks hatch, for to prevent the ants from accessing to them you will just need to coat the entire perimeter of the box with talcool (talc + alcool).
I often use this system for natural incubation and it works very well, I don't have problem with ants but with blood-sucking red mites and I brush an arboreal glue around the edge of my boxes for to prevent them access inside it.

You should surely know that Oecophylla were traditionally used in Asia in lemon groves to fight against tree pests (mainly caterpillars). These ants are even regularly eaten in many countries.
Why wouldn't you experiment with transparent artificial nests hung directly in the trees where there are colonies? it would be interesting to see how they would settle in !
in some ethology laboratories where they are studied they use artificial trees made of multiple test tubes hung in a rack on a support with clamps.
But be careful with the sun because it can lead to overheating inside the nest and kill everybody, so it needs a lot of ventilation and a system to opacifie the nests to encourage them to settle there.
wear rubber boots coated with talcum powder to keep them from climbing on you! 😉
I love your homestead! (And am very slightly envious😊) You mentioned possibly adding another house on the property. This is a great idea! It can be a guest house when you have visitors, and can be used for older relatives who can still be somewhat independent but may need help with some of their daily tasks. This is a dream of mine if I ever have a homestead. I'll have the main house, and a few smaller houses on the property for friends and family to either live there or just to visit and stay for a while. Kind of like a family village.

Are you thinking about adding the weaver ants to Pantdora? That would be neat to see their little leaf nests in there.
Feel free to cover the ground around the raised beds with bark or similar, to keep the moisture in the ground, for when you start growing in the beds.
Hi Mikey maybe make your chickens pasture raised just provide a taller fence around your farm area so they dont get out and they will go back in side when they want to lay eggs
Hey Mikey, just make sure to plant native/local species of plants that can benefit the ecosystem

Am sorry to hear about the Silkies. Would you consider making some changes to their housing?
The roosts: chickens are supposed to sleep on these, keeping them feeling safe, secure and out of the nest boxes (so less likely to poop in the nest box). however, Silkies don't fly, so there needs to be lower roosts. A good roost set up could be like an ladder, a ladder leaning against the wall, with roosts from 6inches, then 12 inches, etc, at an angle so they can jump up to the height they want to sleep at. Angled so that the higher up ones don't poop on the lower. Or maybe you could use branches from your forest, a bit like you have for the iguanas? I've read that secure chickens lay more eggs. (Quick Edit: was reading up more on Silkies and, confusingly, some say they don't roost but instead huddle together in the nest boxes, whilst others say they do on low perches/'roosts. Why is it so confusing? : end edit)
Nest boxes: those lovely ones that you have on legs are far too high for the Silkies to reach. They need a short board or something across the entrance to stop any eggs rolling out - as you saw, with the baskets on the floor, the eggs roll out without a short 'wall' to keep them in. They should have some sort of bedding inside. Could you maybe chop the legs down to make them low enough for the Silkies to reach? Or add long ramps (so they are not too steep - a low gradient is recommended) Or maybe even ramps that could double as roosts?
Chicks: They need a different food from the adults and a container at a low enough level for them to be able to eat and drink from. If they stay in with the adults, I've read that it is sometimes good for them to areas that they can run into that is too small for an aggressive adult to reach them.
The White House on the Hill UA-cam channel raised some Silkies about 2 years ago - 'We finally let her sit on eggs. (The Silkie Project) - I noticed in that video that once they had enough eggs, they moved the other Silkies out of the small housing that they had put them in (having separated out some for breeding purposes) and let the broody hen stay in there alone with the eggs. 23 days later (actually not sure when that day count started) the first chicks hatched. The housing was a moveable triangle housing, with a small roost along the back edge. Matey made his own nest boxes. Actually the video is only 10 minutes long, if you did fancy a watch.

You should make a naturalistic pond in the food forest for the local birds and wildlife, considerably far from the livestock though don’t want to attract snakes near the bunnies

Mikey, your property is really turning into something beautiful! My question is, have you ever thought of building yourself?A small gym? something I was surprised was not included with your house!
Mikey, you can plant kalabasa or squash on that slope land. Kamote or sweet potato 🍠 will also grow well in slope land. And it will also prevent soil erosion.
As for the chickens: Other vlogs I’ve watched…is that they separate the babies with the mom kasi tunutuka ng mga bully chickens. They put them in an elevated cage made of bamboo, saka nalang inilabas pag medyo malaki na ang mga manok.

That is how I ate, when I was a kid, sour mango. My mom would thinly slice the sour mangos and had it soaked in salt and water for days. Mmmm
No till gardens featuring cover crops and fully alive soils with an abundance of microbiology working in tandem with the forest and crops makes growing and harvesting so much more healthier and bigger too.

When I was working at a school with a farm, it was partially a forest farm. One of the coolest things was that we placed the pigs area in the midst of a grove of oaks....pigs love acorns.

I would suggest also having a food understory with a mix of native and crop plants to go along with the forest to replenish nutrients back into the soil during the growing season, this in turn will provide better soil quality for the trees and other plants in the forest. And it looks absolutely beautiful 🤩

There might be a snake going around your property. The snake might be hiding near your chicken coop and attacking the chickens at night. You caught a snake already in your property. Just be careful. Snakes love to eat birds, chicken, rabbits, and other small animals. Take care, you and RJ.❤❤❤

Hi! I have been following your vlogs and I am always excited on what’s happening in your farm… if I may suggest… why not put a series of small dams in your river bed. Just like how beavers would do to retain the water longer and give it a chance to seep in the watershed beneath the soil! Who knows, you might just grow a new ecosystem in your backyard! Good luck! Dry season (we don't have summer season here) is not the best time to plant in ph June is the best time to plant trees.

If you want a food forest make sure you have enough trees so that you can still have weaver ants and healthy trees.
Grow some regular pineapple in the side lot!!! You’ll LOVE them!

If I can suggest what kinds of edible plants for your food forest, you can try planting squash and green onions, as well as okra. We used to hsve green onions and okra before but the aggressive kudzu unfortunately ended up choking them.
By the way, you might probably want to preserve the sloping riverbank through the creek as the riverbank looks like prime nesting areas for Kingfishers and maybe even Bee-eaters if these start showing up in the area since both species often like to nest in such areas as they don't build conventional nests. Speaking of birds, those birds that you saw flying over the trees appear to be some Swifts or Swiftlets of some description, and they look like they're hunting for insects. The swiftlets in my neighborhood often hunt towards evening when flying insects take to the air.
You could carve "dirt" steps into that steep bit - love the forest area :)

A lot of people are. It's a permaculture thing. Problem is, not everyone has a forest on their property, and some have to actually create a forest first by planting trees which takes years. Look up "food forest" here on youtube.
