What are you growing now??? I'm trying with my section; composting EVERYTHING back to the ground, ducks free range, pig manure too. Seeing some results, but the bark beetles are devastating all the pines around here so I'm looking for food trees that will survive our climate.

@@tonibenton1931,currently we have Moringa, yams, sweet potatoes, fig, pomegranate are the pioneers we are using. We are fortunate enough that almost anything grows here if you provide shade and water. We lived up north and saw the devastating effects of those beetles, sorry I have no clue on fighting those . Possibly attract more birds.

@@ourrockydreamontheelephant4188 if the flickers & songbirds can't take them out I'm at a loss too. Trying to keep a few of the dead around specifically for the birds. If I ever find a way that doesn't involve poisonous chemicals I'll be sure to let everyone know.

Made me cry. People with so little, making the most of a hostile environment. No lawns was an eye opener. So much of what we think we need, or should have,is really of little consequence. We need sustenance, food for the body and the lovely little flowers for the soul.

Great to see that Geoff can again visit the site and of course changes there over last two years!
Just as a humble request: would it be possible to create a 'technical' video about the inputs (e.g. water, human labour, overall time span/schedule and external other resources) and outputs? Maybe in the context of local average living standards? It seems to me that such analysis would be very useful to convince people who are considering of making the decision to start changing their lives.

I don't think the dragon fruit will do very well on the Lucina tree, hopefully it will work for you, but here in Mexico, we've found that it will only grow well in mesquite family of trees. There are two reasons, one, the lucinas (huajes) have insects that eat the dragon fruit, but they also don't have the rough bark like mesquite that allows the dragon vine roots to hold on and collect moisture and nutrients.

IIRC this is Jordan. Good job.
Imho desert countries should focus on creating or buying biochar in big quantities because unlike compost it doesn't need to be replenished every year and lasts for centuries so in the mid and long term you're saving a lot of resources. And straw bales for mulching. Just my 0.04$ (adjusted for inflation).

So inspiring. I don't live in the desert, but nevertheless I started applying some of the permaculture principles to my tiny backyard garden by adding wood chips and the clippings from pruning to the top soil and I can see the benefits. I learned from a lecture at the Advancing Eco Agriculture channel that pests can't attack healthy plants that live in a healthy top soil that has lots of biodiversity in micro organisms, because healthy plants have the amount of sugar content that is simply too high for those pests. According to what I have learned, and observed as well, pests always eat dead material, or material that is already weak and about to die, and lacking the sugars. Micro organisms convert bio mass into plant available nutrients so that plants and trees have enough sugar content to grow healthy and strong which protects them against pests.
