A simplistic question with a fairly obvious answer. Unfortunately if you limit yourself to qualitative assessments in this area you won't get any meaningful data. The issue with a qualitative assessment in this context is that due to bias and education you will get the subset of answers that don't represent the magnitude of the issues each sampled participant faces.
A quick look at overseas and you'll see where researchers have chased quantitative data, the answer of why ageism is becoming rampant generally relates to skewing of fiscal support from governments to older generations. One area of research that could be beneficial is the preferences of generations towards qualitative and quantitative data. I'd hypothesise that older generation prefer more qualitative data which if true would hinder the ability for younger generations to have meaningful conversations around ageism and hence make progress towards resolving the issues.
Based on the data I've seen in other countries, it's quite likely that older generations in Australians have had excessively generous support from the government increasingly at the expense of younger generations. In good times you can get away with this disparity to a degree but these are not good times especially for younger generations which further inflames the situation.

Very poor video from of all places Melb University, just shows the extent of the lack of understanding of ageism in this country and the immaturity.
