  • The good news is, we are living longer - and with advances in health care, older adults are living healthier, more fulfilling lives than previous generations. So what's the secret to embracing our next chapter, and to even look forward to it? Cathleen Toomey shares the secret to successful aging, in an uplifting and funny talk that people of all ages will relate to. Cathleen Toomey is branding professional who has helped build such NH brands as Timberland, Stonyfield Farm and UNH, and cut her teeth in ad agency work in New York City and Boston. In the last 10 years, Cathleen has been responsible for sales and marketing for RiverWoods, a nationally-accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community, as their VP of Marketing. A former non-profit board member for CrossRoads House, Prescott Park Arts Festival and Exeter Chamber of Commerce, she currently focuses her volunteer efforts with St. Vincent de Paul of Exeter. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I will turn 74 May10 I am a low income senior, I believe the reason I am doing so well is good diet, going to the gym 5 days a week for the past 40 years, and a daily meditation.

Thank you so much for motivating me to get out of the house. I was considering volunteering with the group SOS and now I’m certain that it’s the right thing to do.
You’ve made a difference to this 76 year old woman.

Wow, she was such an enjoyable person to listen to can’t really say why maybe it’s because I am getting older so it’s a topic of interest, but she didn’t say anything all that enlightening that we don’t already all know, but she was just so enjoyable to listen to it was a great video.

At 12:00 she says " Grow friendships. Relationships matter. Get some. Get out of the house". Well..... That is easy to say and VERY HARD TO ACTUALIZE!!! There isn't some store that you can just go to and "GET SOME" as she puts it!!! I have been trying to develop new friendships however meeting new people in of itself is frequently difficult. Now with this pandemic of the past couple of years it is even more difficult. One of the aspects of people saying things as she does is that they don't specify how to go about meeting new people and developing friendships. This causes me to feel annoyed when people say things like she does that sound so easy to say but realistically are not!!!

I do not like the phrase „successful aging“. It does not make any sense in my humble opinion. What is then „unsuccessful aging“? Not aging at all?

This applied to the ppl who have access to medical and dental care. The dif between the ppl who have med and dental health and a doctor to talk about benefits of good diet etc
Overweight ppl need to be told how unhealthy that is. Smokers need to be told stop. Parts of country thrive in fatty, fried foods.

30 was a hard one for me (I’m going to be 70 soon) …..when I was 30 my life wasn’t what I expected it to be….I was floundering! Had no career, had no love…..I got involved with drugs briefly. But then I started to build my life. I put myself out there in the world….trying/failing….trying/failing…..until the pieces started to fall into place. I was living for my story….getting brave (because I was very shy)…..and by 40 my life was a life!…..but I did hit a hard bump getting there and at 37 I became a christian and life was full and I was happy. Now that, that part of my story is over…..at near 70 I’m looking at these videos for advice from the very old (because I’m just elderly 😂). I pray my health continues to be good so I can “travel” on UA-cam to places all over the world! It beats sitting on a plane for hours!

(very few good quality drs from what I see) But it is not all a simple answer... love it here.

I don't know how old she is but there's nothing wrong with looking one's age, she's not obese and if she's healthy that's the main thing. Being thin past middle age is hard and it's not realistic to expect the same body as in one's 20's. She looks fine.
