It was my hope that the extra compartment was where you could put a 2nd battery for it to jump power to once the first one died if one wanted to do a continuous recording I had an event I filmed that I thought was going to last 2 hrs. IT ended up more like 2 and 1/2. The battery died before the last half hour. Would be great to have a 2nd battery that you do not have to change when you cannot be at the camera when you are leaving it on a tripod to record. In addition I do not know why they made this so hard to get into and it makes one fear they are going to break something trying to get it out. Also it is not even mentioned in the manual. Why put it there if it is not covered in the manual?
cluvsonj that would be really nice if Sony did that. Where they both operate continuously. 150min recording time is fantastic for sure. I had no idea that it lasted that long :D I totally agree with you, I’m so scared I’m gonna break it when I try to get it off. That’s definitely very odd that it’s not even mentioned in the manual. It’s like Sony wants to see how many people figure it out lmao!!
I still have two very old Sony Handycams a DRC H21 and 38. Both still work flawlessly. As long as they still make tapes and batteries I'll still use it.
I actually love those old camcorders a lot, Sony really does have some quality cameras. I was thinking about purchasing an old Hi8 since that was my first. Yeah you’re right too because I still see that amazon and Camera stores still sells everything for old cameras
I just got this camcorder and am going through this now. I got the extra battery pack on Amazon with a charger and 2 1600 batteries (1230 comes with the camera). I also got a Nikon D3500. I think these will work well together. I will be using these at SFF convention to video conferences and candids.
Ed Beecher those are definitely a good combination for sure. It’s funny how many people I run into that ask me why I use cameras and camcorders when phones these days have them, I simply tell them that smart phones can’t do half the things that these devices made for only videos and photos can do, like powerful optical zoom and manual iso, and custom exposure time, along with manual focus. And smartphones will never have a 12-15x optical zoom
@@04mach1speed I did a comparison of the CX-405, the D3500, and the Galaxy S9+ yesterday and you can really tell the difference between the 3 in both photo and video formats. While I did graduate in Photography 40 yrs ago, I have not picked up a camera in 30 yrs. so it is almost like I am a beginner again. I found a nice in depth tutorial on line for the D3500 and a lot is coming back to me. One thing that I can not stress enough is to just go out anywhere (your living room, your backyard, the park) and take pictures. Get use to how the camera works, drain a battery taking pictures. I also like how the D3500 will Blu tooth to the smart phone. Off to Portland for Orycon
Ed Beecher that’s actually pretty cool. That’s something I always wanted to get into but wasn’t motivated enough. The D3500 can connect to a phone?, now that’s awesome. Smartphones cameras are very impressive these days but nothing compares to a good old SLR or DSLR. I’ll have to check that out. Hope you had fun :)
Dino Sabanovic WOW!! I just went back and looked, you weren’t kidding. I guess I was in such a damn hurry to do this video I didn’t realize it was an HDMI 😂😂
How to turn off display icons on the LCD Screen. Did you turn it off or you edited the recorded clips? I managed to turn them off but still end up with the MENU button in the upper left and the battery in the upper right. I am using the camcorder for live streaming, If I can't get rid of these the camera is useless to me.
I actually used my phone to make the video. But their should be a button that says display that turns icons offf. I’ll check again when I get home. Unfortunately when you turn them off I think a couple of icons stay on like battery and minutes left on card
I just bought one of these and tried to do a video and after 17 min of recording it went into a recording loop. I cant find anywhere in the instructions about loop recording and i cant find it in the menu so do you know how to turn off loop recording on this thing? Its a camcorder so i figured it should record all the through till the battery went dead but it did not. i am so frustrated with all this video stuff right now.
I purchased mine over three years ago, I see no reason to replace it. I do recommend purchasing a couple of extra batteries and SD cards though. If you can still find one, I'd get it.
@@04mach1speed what battery did you get and from where? The Sony I'm finding on Amazon a lot of people are saying they're knock offs and quality sucks.

Yeah but the quality isn’t all that good because on most of these cheaper handymans the picture quality is usually nowhere near as good as phones or actual cameras.
Hey Ramiz, you should be able to since the USB connector is already attached to Camera and the camera power brick is 5V 1.5A So any 1 amp power bank would definitely do it, a small 2,200mah power bank may not be enough, you would probably need one that’s twice that just to be on the safe side. Just make sure the output of the bank is 1amp, they usually tell you on all banks. 2 amp could be too much but then again maybe not. Hope this helps :)
yeah it was on iMovie, this was before i got an editing program and learned a little about editing. ive certainly gotten better over the years, the editing on this video wasnt good at all
KJM Promotions I tried looking everywhere and couldn’t find anything about live streaming. Their is no mode or button, however I was watching some videos online and you still can with this camera but I still can’t figure out how.
You know it’s funny you say that because I’ve been looking for a camera with pause feature forever now and can’t seem to find one. This one doesn’t have it. I really wish it did because I love that feature. Some articles say that cameras aren’t designed to do this but this is false because I have a Samsung camera that literally has a pause button on video so I don’t know why Sony can’t do this
Luke Friendly I apologize for taking this long:( no, that’s actually one thing I wished it did, the battery would last much longer if it did but I tried many times and it kept shutting off.
You know, that’s a very good question because that was the other camera I was looking at. I found that the Sony had better night shot. But that’s all I was really looking at. Due to the price. They’re both probably equally matched in most categories. Hope this helps :)
Mason Witte sylvanic cooperation seems to be pretty significant. Unfortunately I didn’t get to play with both outside in the dark, but what I did was go into Best Buy and cup my hand over both lenses to the point where it showed up pretty dark on the screen. And the Sony was the only one that adjusted the ISO at a level that I could see pretty good detail on the inside of my hand. Plus the Sony has something called “Low Lux mode” which once its activated it makes the dark look even brighter than before. That low Lux mode does turn the image slightly grainy. But you really don’t even need the mode on to begin with.
Thanks for the review... looking for a entry cam for UA-cam videos... by the Way... I is interlaced and P is for progressive. With out getting really technical the screen redraws every 30 times a second or so... Interlaced does odd, then even frames (think of lines left to right on the screen), this is how the old broadcast standard was always... P is progressive scan, it does full frames 30 times a second. PC monitors are all Progressive scan. Just a basic of the tech, it goes much deeper than that but, it's just the basics..
Dave Evans oh that’s cool as hell. Yeah truthfully I learned a little more about that after I had already posted the video so I didn’t wanna have to redo the video or make another :( I appreciate the info on I vs P :) So technically P is better?
This was the one thing I wished Sony had put in their smaller models. It doesn’t, which sucks because you have to run it through a separate editing program.
I have that exact same problem with my IPhone. I think it’s because Apple products don’t support AVCHD which is absolutely ridiculous! I had to get a video converter like “Wondershare” unfortunately :(
Peter Wan hey Peter. I just plugged it in and opened the screen to turn it on and the battery icon disappeared, telling me it’ll record non stop while plugged it. So yes it does :)
jesus Dino well I absolutely love this CX405 but now I’m having issues trying to get the format file to my iPhone and UA-cam because all Sony camcorders record in AVCHD which Apple nor UA-cam supports, so I have to find a good video converter, do you know of any good ones?
PhotonsAcrossTheAir I use an HDR-CX150 and have no problem with editing in Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 13. Think it's now 14 or Vegas. Not very expensive. Think i need to upgrade my camera now since mine is 10 years old!
I have the same camera and use windows movie maker and sony vegas pro 11 and both do the trick, all my uploads are made with the sony so it works perfectly
PhotonsAcrossTheAir bit late but for XAVCHD-S to be seen by an iPad you need to change the video from 5 digits to 8 digits and move them to the photo folder ~ 12345 to 12345678 (HD000001)
Minh Mạng I actually just bought a new 100mb/s sandisk 16gig card and on the standard High def setting not highest but second highest setting which I think is still 720P I get 100 minutes or 1 hour 40 min so on a 32gb you’ll probably get around 80 min on the highest 1080P mode not bad if you ask me. I'm with you Ardy. I choose 60p (highlighted) and then go back and it says 60i every time. This is in AVCHD. Although in XAVC S I can get 60p. Oh and I'm using a U3 SanDisk which isn't even necessary with HD. It is with 4K, but not HD. Wait a minute Ardy. I just changed HDMI Resolution from 1080p back to Auto and I don't see how there's any connection, but now AVCHD has 60p and to top it off, I kept going to the right on that 60i/60p screen and it said 60p isn't possible, but then when I went back, it finally said it was 60p. So I'm not going to mess with it. Although, I want to always shoot in the XAVC S codec at 60p. I'm actually not pleased at all with this camera. I know what 1080p is supposed to look like and my videos so far all look like VHS tape - blurry, fuzzy crap and the lens is clean. I'm going to give it one more chance because I changed from XAVCS 30p to 60p and I'm going to retry AVCHD at Highest Quality (it was at High) and 60p (it was at 60i). If the video is still crappy, it's going back. Oh, another thing, on a sunny day, white houses about an 8 iron away are a white blotch with windows not even distinguishable! 3. the monitor flips around for selfie recording, be careful as it only flips 180 one way
4. you can press the photo record button at the top whilst video recording to take still shots
7:35 I took it off and have a backup battery in there
That’s what I think I’m gonna do. I had no idea it came off haha
@@04mach1speed I had to carefully use a small screwdriver to pry it out. But it was well worth it.
Chulo Brown TV that’s a good idea. I have an exacto knife I can use.
I would love to give a second thumb up for that PS3 next to the TV ;)
I saw another video that said that wasn’t another battery slot even though looks like it. Strange!
hey there, yeah i opened it about a year ago, and sure enough it actually is a battery slot. crazy. i wish all camera companies would do this

@@kenya4941 just ended up using a knife. Carefully of course. It worked. I really wish companies would implement this in more products
what is the name of the older sony handycam you compared the 405 to ? :D looks great too.
its the Sony DCR-DVD610 :)
Just bought one today. Thanks for the insight.
Hey no problem. You like it?
Wow thanks for this review with low lignt
3:35. dude, that's the HDMI lol
Dino Sabanovic WOW!! I just went back and looked, you weren’t kidding. I guess I was in such a damn hurry to do this video I didn’t realize it was an HDMI 😂😂
vLwi I wish I could go back and edit that. I felt stupid.
Hi! Did you find any video converter for this video camera?
Yami Perez I did not, did you?
Panasonic has a camcorder very similar but it does night shots better, however for general use the CX405 is pretty sound all things considered.
Definitely love mine for sure. I just got a couple extra batteries
@@04mach1speed what battery did you get and from where? The Sony I'm finding on Amazon a lot of people are saying they're knock offs and quality sucks.
loslosthuy hey sorry it took a while. I actually bought a brand called ENEGON and it came with two 1,300mah batteries and a 2 bay charger. They work great! And I bought them over 6 months ago. I’ll see if I can find a link for you

I just bought it last month..it's great for the price. Thanks for you review.
Paul Jason oh that’s good :)
I love this thing. It really is a good price
Yeah, and that spare battery thing you mentioned, it's not for a spare battery, it's just a guide on how to insert the battery. Cheers!
not correct, I just opend it and it is for a spare battery, look at my youtube channel. I have made a clip about it and I will upload the clip today
which video in your channel? I can't find it..can you post the link here?
I just made it, I will upload it now, I will notice you when it is visible
Can you take pictures on the handy cam ?
Yeah but the quality isn’t all that good because on most of these cheaper handymans the picture quality is usually nowhere near as good as phones or actual cameras.
Can i charge battery(405) through power bank??thank u..
Hey Ramiz, you should be able to since the USB connector is already attached to Camera and the camera power brick is 5V 1.5A
So any 1 amp power bank would definitely do it, a small 2,200mah power bank may not be enough, you would probably need one that’s twice that just to be on the safe side. Just make sure the output of the bank is 1amp, they usually tell you on all banks. 2 amp could be too much but then again maybe not. Hope this helps :)
You edited this video in iPad right
yeah it was on iMovie, this was before i got an editing program and learned a little about editing. ive certainly gotten better over the years, the editing on this video wasnt good at all
Does this support Direct Show? For Live Streaming using the HDMI? Thanks!
KJM Promotions to be honest I’m actually not sure, when I get home I’ll check, I’ll be sure to get back with you.
KJM Promotions I tried looking everywhere and couldn’t find anything about live streaming. Their is no mode or button, however I was watching some videos online and you still can with this camera but I still can’t figure out how.
No it doesn't support live streaming
Nice video bhai
Hey thanks :) except my stupid HDMI part 😂😂
Is there is a pause button
You know it’s funny you say that because I’ve been looking for a camera with pause feature forever now and can’t seem to find one. This one doesn’t have it. I really wish it did because I love that feature. Some articles say that cameras aren’t designed to do this but this is false because I have a Samsung camera that literally has a pause button on video so I don’t know why Sony can’t do this
Does it have clean hdmi output?
funny because I dont know, i've never used the HDMI on this thing, always used just the SD
Thank you.
They are still selling this in 2019
Surprisingly yeah. It’s a good camera I just wish it had a couple more things like built in IR light

Were you able to film in TimeLapse mode?
How about in low light? Moon at night?
Can you film with the display screen closed or does it cancel the record....thanks
Luke Friendly I apologize for taking this long:( no, that’s actually one thing I wished it did, the battery would last much longer if it did but I tried many times and it kept shutting off.
Get panasonic hc-v180 for that feature.
You need a shap staff to open that spare battery compartment
Yeah I actually figured it out over a year after getting it. Thanks for the help 😉
How does this stack up against the canon vixia hr800
You know, that’s a very good question because that was the other camera I was looking at. I found that the Sony had better night shot. But that’s all I was really looking at. Due to the price. They’re both probably equally matched in most categories. Hope this helps :)
@@04mach1speed is it a big difference at night or little
Mason Witte sylvanic cooperation seems to be pretty significant.
Yeah truthfully I learned a little more about that after I had already posted the video so I didn’t wanna have to redo the video or make another :( I appreciate the info on I vs P :)
So technically P is better?
PhotonsAcrossTheAir yes, P would give a sharper picture.
Dave Evans oh very nice, thanks Dave :D
No problem... I got my 405 but, it's bad... E:60:00 on the screen... ebay deal...hassle...sigh..

Why did I never see this!? :(
Yes works great for that. I’m sorry that I didn’t see this 5 months ago 😢
How much Time does the battery Last please reply????
I really apologize for the delay, I had a lot going on. But yes my camera lasts about 80-90 minutes on the standard 1240mah battery.
Does the cx405 have TimeLapse mode?
This was the one thing I wished Sony had put in their smaller models. It doesn’t, which sucks because you have to run it through a separate editing program.

Anyone would happen to know why my videos save into a private folder? Not allowing me to drag the videos onto my Mac.
I have that exact same problem with my IPhone. I think it’s because Apple products don’t support AVCHD which is absolutely ridiculous! I had to get a video converter like “Wondershare” unfortunately :(

Peter Wan you’re welcome buddy.
So which you one do you prefer now in 2018?
jesus Dino well I absolutely love this CX405 but now I’m having issues trying to get the format file to my iPhone and UA-cam because all Sony camcorders record in AVCHD which Apple nor UA-cam supports, so I have to find a good video converter, do you know of any good ones?
PhotonsAcrossTheAir I use an HDR-CX150 and have no problem with editing in Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 13. Think it's now 14 or Vegas. Not very expensive. Think i need to upgrade my camera now since mine is 10 years old!
I have the same camera and use windows movie maker and sony vegas pro 11 and both do the trick, all my uploads are made with the sony so it works perfectly
PhotonsAcrossTheAir bit late but for XAVCHD-S to be seen by an iPad you need to change the video from 5 digits to 8 digits and move them to the photo folder ~ 12345 to 12345678 (HD000001)
wow you made me curios about that extra space
MrAlvatroz yeah I keep hearing from people that it’s easier accessible but I’m too afraid to break it :(
I'm afraid I'll break it too.

How to set to 60p or 60i man ?. My sony cx405 just take the 50i or 50p
Ardy Frans wait really? Mine only says 60i and 60p are you using an SD card that’s at least 70-80 mb/s recording speed?
Just a big pure white blob. That is set to Auto. I shouldn't have to set it to Outdoor, nor should I have to change the White Balance geeessshhhh Sony!
