    I watched until the annoying music came on. Most people who view these are or were on the job. Okay, I decided to hit mute, as this footage is excellent (and I'm a rock guitarist!). I mean, I get it, but personally, I'd rather just hear the radio going on these things. @@Tyrogrs1994 Acceleration of mass through the roof and HVAC openings, due to vapor expansion is why structure fires draw air. You're right that the hand lines and streams were not large/wide enough to create the amount of pressure required for the rate of air flow seen in the video.

      @ForestNinjaZero Fires draw air cuz that's what it takes to burn. Has nothing to do with hvac systems. Look up fire triangle.

    • @ForestNinjaZero
      @ForestNinjaZero Рік тому +2

      @@jimmccabe801 Please pay closer attention: Materials vaporize at ignition temperature, due to acceleration of particles, which are continuously colliding with atmosphere and surrounding surfaces. As they accelerate, density decreases due to velocity and pressure - they push each other away, and force surrounding gases through openings, such as cracks in doors, HVAC vents, and holes in the roof, which form as it burns. Due to lower density, they're pushed upward toward the higher openings, which causes negative pressure (suction) at lower openings, such as entrances and open/burned windows. This is why firefighters cut roofing and break windows on upper floors prior to interior attack, then enter with a wide stream to push vapor away from their path, for safety and visibility.

    What we know today and they wish they had known then, is that initially it was paint that was burning or a Class B fire. Between the fire sprinklers and the attack lines, I would think the fire actually spread. Add to that, all the oxygen it could suck in (you can see it being drawn into the fire), they weren’t going to stop this. Defensive all the way. Nice try though. Praise God they all got out ok.
    Going forward, fire protection engineers need to rethink fire protection for big box stores. Perhaps a dry chemical system (like used over commercial cooking areas) would be better suited over class B products. In addition, better coverage of water sprinklers over these 30’ storage racks packed with Class A materials might need to be considered.
    Good job SJFD for staying safe!

But as long as oxygen is being introduced the fire will continue to grow. I’d go with foam in this fire.

    Seems like this one was a "loser" from the get-go. The crews did a good job; they started offensive but knew they were probably going to eventually go defensive. They advanced about 30 feet in, were met with a volume of fire beyond handling capability, kept their egress right behind them, and evacuated everyone quickly when command called for it.

    All sorts of petrochemicals sitting in one of those, good try to catch it. That fuel gave a nice hot fire, so once the chimney effect got started things were pretty much done, really needed the big hand hoses considering the fuel load. If that structure had a dome truss, calling the shift was perfectly justified.

      Absolutely! Wonder what the Elkhart XD Ram would have done at this fire with stacked tips. It looks like multiple things were working against fire attack. The fuel load needed more gpm than a 2 1/2 and 1 3/4 could provide. Also stream reach looks like an issue as well. San Jose did an amazing job being on scene fast along with an aggressive fire attack. It’s just crazy how the fuel load of this Home Depot was too much for interior crews.

    • @country_boy9180
      @country_boy9180 Рік тому +2

      @@justinnewquist6111 I’ve fought the same fire in an outside lumber yard- stacked tips are risky. If the bundled is banded, great, but when I hit a second tier bundle of 2x4s with a deck gun they went everywhere and the heat release increased. You need an adjustable nozzle- 2 blitz fires would have been interesting in the HD fire- had they been able to supply them. Someone said deck guns, cool, but I don’t know of their willingness to put an engine ($600,000 for a big city custom cab) under the canopy, the horizontal clearance, and the vertices clearance to get the deck gun in service- those doors aren’t that high.
      Stacks tips would do OK for cooling the roof, but that does address fires in the pallet racking.
      BTW after the fact it’s is so obvious which bundles were pressure treated ( which were so wet they didn’t burn,) and which ones were banded ( but the fire burnt through a couple of bands) but it’s was impossible to see when on fire.
      Big box hardware stores scare me - paint aisle- especially the solvents and the pool chlorine surrounded by plastic products. Also the overhead storage in cardboard boxes- at least around here big box hardware stores keep pool chlorine outside- Walmart doesn’t

    Nice video. Poor choice of music. In fact, no music is needed for something like this.

    I just love how the command was so confident and so calm really an amazing job by all and him. And really I didn't mind the music for those who don't want to hear the music there's plenty videos out there on this fire with no music

    lololo. crazy. surprised to see this. SJFD generally wont go inside to put the fire out. they like the " hit er hard from the yard " approach. bet they was poopin their panties going in a rippin commercial.

    Defensive is code for surround and drown….
    I always hated going on the defensive. But I guess it is best to be safe than risk a firefighter’s life for a building that should have had an operational sprinkler system! Right!

    Nice try gentlemen, it was a losing battle inside from the start. Smart call to vacate the building.
