FORRT's Academic Wheel of Privilege

The Academic Wheel of Privilege (AWoP) provides an alternative method to assigning authorship and credit in scientific papers (as opposed to the classic “merit” system, which, in our view, perpetuates inequities in academia). We believe the WoP can serve as a starting tool to generate deeper discussions on the concepts of privilege, power imbalance, implicit bias, positionality, and intersectionality. Furthermore, we believe the WoP helps raise awareness of the hidden curriculums and systems-conferring power and dominance to a minority of researchers-as a means to galvanize change in norms and culture toward more equitable academia.
The AWoP is a starting tool for communicating the concepts of privilege, power imbalances, implicit biases, positionality, and intersectionality-hopefully sponsoring a change toward a more equitable assignment of credit and authorship in academia. FORRT's Neurodiversity team thought that a major barrier to these more profound reflections is the lack of a didactic tool with flexible operationalizations. After using the first iteration of the AWoP to help us assign credit and authorship order to our preprint ‘Bridging Neurodiversity and Open Scholarship,’ we are producing a scalable web app so folks can apply the AWoP to their context and needs. Users will be able to remove and add privileges, de/increase the number of categories, and choose how to score participants' academic privileges. We are also working on a standalone piece addressing the benefits, scope, and proper uses for the AWoP (e.g., adjacent categories should not be interpreted as having the 'same' level of privilege). We here have a privelege to know this video, while many others don't.
