When I went to Hangzhou, I joined an Aussie Tour bus. There were about 40 of us. We got off at West lake, and the tour guide was taking us around. But the Aussies ignored them and stayed at a park were they were watching a 90 y.o. man doing the Qigong slow motion stretching exercises. The Aussies, all shapes, sizes and ages, stood behind him and all followed his moves. Mate, I never laughed so much in my life. The Old bloke could see the Aussie struggling behind him, and I'm pretty sure I saw a smile on his face. After about 10 minutes, the Old bloke started to do scissor kicks and jumps in the air. Most of the Aussie fell to the ground and stayed there ... the other younger ones just bent over, with hands on knees, puffing and totally out of breathe. But, the old bloke just kept going. I could not contain my laughter ... seeing all my Aussie mates on the ground, or bent over like squatted flies (and the bigger Aussies ... mate ... I thought they may have needed medical attention).
There is Zuizhou too.

I love this place. Although I am Australian, this is my second home. I know every back street, every path up the hills. Amazing convenient place. Can do everything by bike. A tip for anyone visiting, make sure to take the massive Golden dragon boat in the evening on the lake.

10 historical sites in hangzhou to check: 双峰插云、三潭映月、花港观鱼、柳浪闻莺、曲苑风荷、南屏晚钟、断桥残雪、平湖秋月、雷峰夕照、苏堤春晓。you can skip the 1st 2.
I don't know too much about the first one, but I wouldn't skip 三潭映月 if I were you. It's my favorite.
Early May would be a better time to travel in that area when trees are green and flowers bloom. The girls are gorgeous in those costumes.
Lingyin Temple is at the foot of the mountain. Your family went to the North Peak, and there is a small temple of the God of Wealth there. You seemed to have missed the real Lingyin temple that has thousands years of history.
Precisely. It's the Northern Peak indeed with the God of Wealth Temple at the peak. The Hutchinsons will need to follow the footpath down the mountain/ or get back to the cable car down to reach Lingyon Temple. This gives them another reason to revisit the Lingyin Temple, Hangzhou again.

There is an "old street" in Hangzhou I recall where you can make your own papers, clay figurines, etc. Lots of restaurants and have people play music nearby. Check it out. I think you just scratched the surface. There is also a book store made of all mirrors I recall.
in Hangzhou, west lake is a fantastic place to visit, not to be missed when you are in China, love the scenery especially the lotus bloom.
I hope this isn't it of Hangzhou and you managed to catch the Impressions West Lake show. I love both the ones in Hangzhou and in Guilin and would love to catch all the other ones around. And just a little north of where you were with the dressing up and the food stands, is a famous tea house called Hupanju. I think your children would love the massive amounts of food that comes with their tea set, especially the bowl of tiny soup dumplings. I also hope you got to try our excellent noodles at a local noodle shop. Shrimp and stewed eel noodles is a good one, as is a sliced pork, bamboo shoots and preserved vegetables one called Pian'er Chuan.

I love all those mountains surrounding Hangzhou, typical traditional Chinese Jiangnan (south of the Yangzi river) nature lives. I know it's maybe a bit late, but if you like hiking/mountain climbing, don't miss Huangshan near by, as some think it's even better than the five famous mountains of central China.
