I grew the Chinese Python Snake Bean -- it was fun to see them grow - and they grow VERY QUICKLY! You can literally see the difference in a day or two's growth. Incredible! BUT you want to eat them when they are small -- when they are large, they are very fibrous and you spend half of your time taking the fibers out of your mouth. It's like eating a large mouthful of very tough, stringy celery. You can't chew them up, so they end up as just a big ball of fibers in your mouth. -- The seeds are rather large and there are several in each bean - when you cut the bean pod into pieces for cooking, you'll see that it resembles a loofa. It's a very interesting plant. I don't know if I'll grow it again next year, but once you buy 1 packet of seeds, you'll never need to buy another one because you'll have lots of seeds from just one plant.

I love it and even though it needs to be eaten small to taste best it never gets stringy like my luffas, but its fat and not as long as these on the video. I have to say my introduction to Asian veggies was a neighbor who had brought home a Korean bride. She was the nicest lady about teaching us her veggies and how to make kimchee. And then my one sister in law married a very nice half Japanese man who shared his mom with us. She likes to tell people she's "Full on Japanese! " and ive learned even more. Being able to now find these lively and totally delicious veggies here in the US is fantastic. The only veg I cant find that was a favorite and I've only had a few times is water spinach. But I know why. If it got loose in the southern waterways it could be very invasive. I did find a couple seed places have it and im up north so I could get it but its banned in many states.
I am growing Red Mountain Celtuce and Chinese Pink Celery in my garden this year. Celtuce leaves are delicious! I can't wait for the stems to get bigger. I will grow Kyoto Red Carrot next year.
Grew pink celery, celtuce, purple bok choy, and the noodle beans this season. The purple bok choy is probably going to be our favorite from this list - grew Shanghai green bok choy in the spring and it was beautiful as well.
Chandra White I’m growing yod fah this year but it is extremely pungent, like wild rocket. That’s not how it’s described so I was wondering if you have experienced that issue?
I grew celtuce early last spring---it stood up extremely well to the damp, cold spring we had in WA, it is also one of the most beautiful crops I have ever grown, but the taste was just OK, I don't plan to give it the space it needs this coming season.
I forgot I'd ordered it and im going to shoot for fall plantings as it said it will do better here in fall. I love to stirfry veggies and im looking forward to trying it.
@@Emeraldwitch30 the whole plant is edible including the leaves in a salad but rather bland to my taste, then again I prefer mustard greens and cabbage, my advice, peel the stem before tasting it, the exterior is EXTREMELY bitter.
@@omfug7148 thank you for your advice. At least the bitter outside doesn't seem to bother the chickens i hope as they love any of my lettuce that goes bitter on me. I was told by my Korean neighbor(I sure miss her. They retired to Arizona) that while it van be unpleasant to eat bitter things are very good for your body. Supposed to help liver functions, another jewel of wisdom she gave me was about green corn silks. She and I were talking about girl problems one day and I mentioned UTI(urinary tract infections) were just awful and how I hated having to get medications for them, she said that for many different urinary issues that they make tea out of green corn silk adding mint or chamomile to make it taste better but one heaping tablespoon of silks in 3 cups of water simmered for anout 15 minutes then try to drink as much as you can. Taken at first sign of UTI it can change the ph of your urine(much like cranberry) and burn out the bacteria and keep it flushed out. It was summer and I had nothing to lose and tried it. It works. I do know when to go to the dr if its not but I haven't had a uti needing antibiotics in 6 years. She said it works for men or children who are up too much at night too but they need to drink it in late afternoon to help empty the bladder more fully so less trips or night time accidents. I do recommend googlibg it as there are some medications you can't mix it with(its a natural blood thinner) but that it has all types of minerals and even vitamin K. Oops got carried away again. My favorite lettuce is hard to find. It is a loose leaf variety called "Prizehead lettuce". It is very sweet, I like to mix it with black seed simpson and butter head bib lettuce.
I eat the stems of our ridiculously lanky black seeded simpsons when they start to bolt. Some are too fibrous already but the ones that aren’t are delicious. I peel the outside off and chop into rounds. Nutty flavor sort of like more mild broccoli stem. Wonderful in lasagna or stir fry
Oh my I had to order more bok choi as as my seeds finally just got too old. So just this past weekend I ordered the purple lady and the Shanghai green along with Chirimen hakusai cabbage and a spinach called monstrueux de viroflay for my new NFT hydroponics. And they sent me the pink celery as a free gift! I had ordered the Utah celery instead of the pink celery and I regretted not sneaking it in and its like the person who picked my order read my mind! Thanks so much for having such beautiful varieties to choose from But can you find any opalka tomato seeds? I ordered from you back in 2008 and kept saving and saving them but have misplaced my seeds. I hope I find them as I did find the purple Russians tomato seeds last year and coaxed 8 plants to sprout. I grew dragon tounge this year. Side by side with my green beans it was slightly juicier, sweeter, and tangier than the green beans. I prefer the more subtle and savory nonsour green beans. Won't be growing dragons tounge again even though they look neat.
I order the Kyoto Red carrots from you 3 years ago. I tried all seasons but the result is always the same: small, thin ad very hard tastless carrots. My soil is perfect for carrots being sandy with a lot of very decomposed organic matter. I also bought your Cosmic Purple and this one is fantastic here
@@Atimatimukti where are you growing and are you using hoophouse/greenhouse or any winter protection? This is a Fall/winter Japanese type so growing best when coming on in the Fall/winter but mild winter weather. Most people strike this balance with a greenhouse if they don't have mild winter weather.
@@RareSeedsBC thank for answering :-). I live in the north of Portugal on a very temperate climate. I grow avocados, cherimoya, mangos and macadamias and also all the temperate fruits. Temps can go to 0º C /32ºF but only for a few hours and only 2 or 3 days in winter. Very nice weather here :-). Some other portuguese varieties of carrots like the purple Pau Roxo do not grow here wich is strange because your Cosmic Purple (very similar) is fantastic here.

I've tried to grow #4, #9 and #12. Every one of them failed miserably. ( and 12 pretty much failed to germinate, and #4 was overwhelmed by other pole beans in my Earthbox.

Chinese snake bean are called snake gourds in India and grown as vegetables. Here in the US you can find those in any Indian grocery stores.

Kyoto tends to do best for fall/winter plantings, did you plant then or in spring?

Are dragon beans eaten like a green bean or like a pinto bean? Do I wait till it dries or go for fresh?
Both work. I like the grean bean verson more tho. But if u fall behind on the harvest and a few pods dry out don't stress it
I prefer them raw, they taste amazing.
Its a dual purpose variety, that can be used for both! just harvest young for green beans! :)

I grew Red florence onion once, it is really strong flavoured, it's not nice at all and wont grow it again.
Hmm other than the carrots, they are either Chinese or purple. Just an observation.
yes, we do have an affinity for purple produce and we have really enjoyed growing and cooking with some of the lesser known Asian crops!

We do usually carry okinawa purple and/or molokai purple, its only listed on the website for spring in the live plant section, as we only do ship and sell live plants in spring! :)
I’ll check back again this spring because it wasn’t selling last year!
