Frank O’Reilly is one of my all-time favorite historian presenters. His book on the Fredericksburg Campaign is a must for readers of the Civil War. Outstanding.
He was so nice to me when he did his presentation. He asked at the beginning if anyone had relatives that fought here. My GG grandfather and his 3 brothers helped plug the angle with the 1st SC Orr’s rifles and all survived the 20 hours of fighting. Amazing moment…
Mr. / Dr. O'Reilly: This is my "personal" opinion which I know doesn't really matter in today's world that we now live in. Your guided tours of such hallowed grounds are fine but, your condescending, politically correct narratives at the end are not. You, as a historian. should know better than to try and peddle such a flawed narrative. Confederate soldiers did not fight and die to preserve/continue slavery and you know it - Union soldiers also did not fight and die to end slavery and you know that too. A much higher calling was their Cause and you know that too. Just so that there is no misunderstanding, all eight of my direct line GGGrandfathers were Confederate soldiers that did their duty and served GOD and Country and NOT to preserve slavery. Facts are more easily digested than propaganda. Have a good day - Roy
As much as you don’t like it, and it happens in every war, the rich send the poor to fight their battles, and in the South, to preserve their way of life, and how they got rich, was to own other human beings as property. That’s the reality of it.

Great, Frank O'Reilly. This date and place deserves to be commemorated. And, great prologue.
Excellent presentation! Thank you for tying the past to the present to the future.
This park ranger speaks well and his monolog at end is well spoken and thought provoking
