Kiki, your Capitan sessions have paid off. Your confidence level over past few "months" has skyrocketed. Do not let the Hells Gate stay your course!
What I am trying to say is the apparent change in your self confidence, assuming it is not cinematic, has been most noticeable.

Observation 5 years late, but your passage through Hell's Gate's winds was bread-and-butter for Australian dinghy sailors. That's the fun of dinghy racing!

It’s absolutely wild 😝 watching Uma sail under the Hell’s Gate Bridge! A bridge under who’s shadow I had many a family picnic
as a child on Randall’s and Wards Island. My siblings and I spent lots of time fishing, slipping rocks and watching ships sail and motor on that stretch of river. I had never considered the possibility of making such a trip myself one day until now, so I’ll study hard in my sailing⛵️ lessons this summer and practice, practice, practice.
    Great video 👍🏽

We sailed that route in the opposite direction in a little Columbia 29 about 34 years ago now. Well done bringing the memories back to life while making and filming your own! The Circle Line Tour boats and garbage barges were a challenge then. Not much seems different, even the tram and helicopters still there. The anchorage by Rikers Island under the flight path of LaGuardia, though calm, somewhat noisy and sleepless though. Fair winds.

Great Job sailing thru Hells Gate. We have been power boating for 40 years, never worry about the tides when going thru Hells Gate and even with twin 300 HP under us there have been time that it was a bit tense going thru, and plety of times that you did not realize you were in the gate at all. Bravo !! Job well done.

Went through both ways some 40+ years ago. Back then you had to post a lookout to avoid power poles floating in the East and Hudson Rivers. I also witnessed a barge trying to pass the tug that was towing it, crazy waters. Nice job to both of you.

What an adventure you had! Early on you talk about the traffic that could make it difficult, and seeing as how I tried to paddle my 17' kayak easterly across the Hudson to get to your patreon meet-up I can COMPLETELY understand! After experiencing the south bound current in the Hudson and a 15 mph head wind from the east, I decided to turn back (more that half way to Brooklyn). During that section of my journey, back toward Jersey, I slowed down to let a north bound FERRY (basically a small ship) go by. Well, the Ferry captain had the same idea and stopped to let me go in front of its path! I started waving for them to continue, and finally they did. I was all about letting these small ships have the "right of way" but, as a small "unpowered" craft, which, from their perspective was on their right, I therefore had the right of way. As I've said before SNAFU (situation normal all fouled up)! I'm so sorry that I didn't get to meet you guys. Had I started an hour earlier I may have made it all the way! Besides all that, I wish you the best in your sail to Halifax! Scott (aka Capt. SNAFU)
PS - My 20' P2-20 Paceship was made near Halifax in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Sadly they are no longer in business.

Way to time the currents! Timing the tides is how we made our way down the ICW. The electric motor just kept us with steerage while we drifted with the current. After that painful experience, we stick to ocean crossing where the electric motor shines 😎

I had often seen boats go through the East River and gazed at the flowing water not realising the trickery of it all. It was kewl seeing Roosevelt Island from on the water. My Grandparents and little Brother lived there. When he died some years ago, we spread some of his ashes by the lighthouse on the North end of the island.

That was excellent sailing. I went through Hell’s Gate last year on my 22’ Catboat. I chose slack tide and motored. I can’t imagine trying it with the tide running. I lived on Ditmars Blvd. and 21st street. The Hells gate Train-Bridge (in the link) goes right over Astoria park and across the strait.
I was there in 2000 when the Yankees played the Mets in the world series.
And I was there on 9/11 2001when the towers fell, it is still as if it happened yesterday.
Anyway, at it's peek, the tide rips through there.
Here's a little history of Hells Gate.
In October 1776, Admiral Howe sailed some of the British fleet through the strait, an action which was considered reckless at the time.[6]
In 1851, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began to clear obstacles from the strait with explosives; the process would last 70 years.[7] On September 24, 1876, the Corps used 50,000 pounds (23,000 kg) of explosives to blast the dangerous rocks, which was followed by further blasting work.[8] On October 10, 1885, the Corps carried out the largest explosion in this process, annihilating Flood Rock with 300,000 pounds (140,000 kg) of explosives.[9] The blast was felt as far away as Princeton, New Jersey[9] and sent a geyser of water 250 feet (76 m) in the air.[10] A 2006 article described the blast as "the largest planned explosion before testing began for the atomic bomb",[10] although the detonation at the Battle of Messines in 1917 was several times larger. Rubble from the detonation was used in 1890 to fill the gap between Great Mill Rock and Little Mill Rock, merging the two islands into a single
      island,www.google.com/maps/place/New+York,+NY/@40.7807086,-73.9247964,802m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c24fa5d33f083b:0xc80b8f06e177fe62!8m2!3d40.7127753!4d-74.0059728

This video reminded me the time that I crossed central London on a 43-foot Narrowboat (almost flat bottom) with a 10HP engine (believe it or not). SO much traffic, strong current (tide going out), (too) high speed, with 3 crew and a cameraman (it was for a documentary) who were terrific. It ended up well, although high levels of adrenaline. It was INTENSE! I get what you guys mean after passing through. Top sailing, excellent filming. Rock on!

I loved this. NY is my home, and Astoria Park, the Southern/Eastern anchor for both the Hell's gate and the Triboro (RFK) Bridges, is were we went to experience green grass. Watching the East River at its most furious was out adventure. Later in life I learned my sailing on San Francisco Bay. SF has similar currents and tides and in the "Slot" between Alcatraz and Angel Islands MUCH more wind. The sailing and the planning looked familiar to me. A great sailing, helm and sails, and piloting job. When I traveled there, I often took the fast boat from 34th St. to LaGuardia for the absolute fun of it and the chance to see my old HS near the Silvercup (bakery) now Studios, My Church (the big green copper steeple) just before the park "pawwwkkk") and "home."

The name "Hell Gate" is a corruption of the Dutch phrase Hellegat (it first appeared on a Dutch map as Helle Gadt[2]), which could mean either "bright strait" or "clear opening",[3] and it was originally applied to the entirety of the East River. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, the first European known to have navigated the strait, described it in his journals during his 1614 voyage aboard the Onrust. Hellegat is a fairly common name for waterways in the Low Countries, with at least 20 examples.[4] Because explorers found navigation hazardous in this New World place of rocks and converging tide-driven currents (from the Long Island Sound, Harlem River strait, Upper Bay of New York Harbor, and lesser channels, some of which have been filled), the Anglicization stuck.

That was the most awesome. I used to live right there on Roosevelt Island, you sailed right by my Apartment. I never saw anyone do that while I lived there. Then I moved to Connecticut and spent some time sailing Long Island Sound. Thank you so much for this adventure. That was some ballsy sailing. Tight squeeze for sure, and Hell Gate looked frightening.

Thanks! Yeah I don’t think we ever would have tried that a when we first started. All the variable wind coming though the buildings was hard to predict and made for a challenging but rewarding trip.

You guys are so athletic! i cannot even imagine how you got around the boat without lifelines ! I am glad you have them though for the atlantic crossing.

That was exciting. I’m familiar with the area you are sailing and I think you did a masterful job of seamanship and filming. Qudos!

I grew up a block and half from a club you were just across from when you were at Manhasset
Bay harbor. In the village of Larchmont NY one of my playgrounds growing up was the Larchmont Yacht Club. That was in the fifties and sixties great times.

Watching you two tack (or just Kika in that one video) is a freaking joy to watch.

It was a quite view which gives us totally different perspective of New York City and Hell’s Gate. It was really intense but at the same time exiting to watch. I was impressed very much that Dan and Kika both did great job! Thank you for sharing! Fair winds ❤️
