3 things make this the best of the pre-ceramics. 1. Quick set date. 2. Glass not perplex. 3. You can change the inserts and you can have virtually 2 watches, Pepsi or black.
I bought a black dial 16700 in 1998. I just swapped out the bezel with a Pepsi bezel. I came across this video to see if the 16700 was made as a Pepsi and apparently it was. It is fun swapping out the bezels.
When I bought the watch it
was my first serious watch and I didn’t know what I was really buying I thought it was a cool function to have a dual zone time function on a watch so I bought it. I was offered GMT 11 but I didn’t want to pay any more and I couldn’t work out the differences and they didn’t mean alot to me at the time. I am finding out now that the GMT 11 doesn’t have a quick date set function. That would have driven me up the wall. At the time I wouldn’t have understood the advantage of a quick date set function and the frustration of the GMT 11. I am glad that I went for the cheaper option bc of the quick date function and now I learn that the 16700 is the last of the Pan American Airline inspired line. Keeping two time zones suits me fine as well. I don’t think I could handle more than that.

Congratulations and thank you for sharing. I have the same model 16700 but with all black bezel. I purchased brand new from the AD in 1998. Used to be my daily beater watch but it's now retired to just special occasions. It's very comfortable to wear, not too thick. I will be taking it in for service soon, first time. Enjoy your classic timepiece.

Oh yes. Says something about some of the Rolex models and how they hold the value and even increase. On the other hand we see the Explorer II dropping hard in resale value.
5 years later and this old model is double that 10k$+ .. crazy indeed

The date enhancer is iconic and you get to appreciate it. Rolex signature.
+Shafir Iqbal the cyclop is definitely a show stopper for some. For me it is an integral part of both the GMT Master and the Submariner.

The quickset date feature is so key, lack of it was the main reason I had to sell my 1675 Rolex GMT as I couldn't stand winding that thing all the time lol. This watch of yours is outstanding. Vintage patina just can't be beat, even by the newer ceramic bezels.

Wish they make this as a ceramic bezel on steel watch....phaat chance!
I really don't like the ceramic bezel. It looks like plastic to me. Also I like the thought of the bezel insert fading with time giving it a nice patina.
