Reviewing the OLDEST WIMPY RESTAURANT in the UNITED KINGDOM!

- I've taken a trip down memory lane today and headed to the oldest Wimpy Burger in the whole of the United Kingdom which is situated in Bexleyheath after opening in 1967. I haven't had a Wimpy in over 30 years and I'm very interested to see if the taste has changed.

We’re they the best chips? No. Was it the best burger? No. Is this the first time Gary’s answered his own questions? No. Will it be the last? No. IS GARY OUR FAVOURITE FOOD REVIEWER? YES!
Haha brilliant! I laughed so much at this comment and thank you 😄
Is this the best comment on youtube today? Yes it is
Love this comment
YES 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I don't care where it is , if I see a Wimpy I'm popping in . cheers for the memories .
You go for it Frank 👍
To be frank I totally agree.
It’s one of those happy places when you walk past a wimpy sign or see it in the distance it instantly puts you in a good mood just to see it 👍
A very jolly, positive, fair intelligent Gentleman! With a welcoming smile! Keep up the excellent work, Gary! Of the English Gentleman breed! 😊
I read that wrong for a moment..
Table service, plates, hot food, great service & pay after you have eaten. The burger patties in the video looked freshly cooked & tasty. Happy to travel & pay more for freshly cooked hot food. Used to go to my local Wimpy every week then Burger King took it over & I stopped going after the first visit - the BK closed after a few years & it's now a health centre. We need more Wimpy's.
I agree Wayne, let’s start a campaign 👍
Not just hot food, cooked fresh to order.
We need more Health Centres 😊
I thought Wimpy went out of business years ago. Good to see they are still in business.
Only just I think as very pricey
very true, burgers should be cheap not hipster prices @@GaryEats
There's about eight in Southend.
@@lexman7179Just as well as the one I used went to in Southend opposite the front has been closed
Still very successful in South Africa and owned by Famous Brands Limited
It feels like Wimpy staff never got told they don't exist anymore and just kept it going with the same decor and food
It’s stuck in a time warp
Sometimes it's good to go back in time certainly if we old enough.. but getting new people or younger people's might be harder
At 14 quid , I don't think so .
This is the perfect description. I remember going to Wimpy around 2006 just because I hadn't been since I was a child. So expensive, sp dated, and the burger tasted like they'd got some cheap frozen burgers from the Iceland down the street. Loved it 😂
So weird they didn't attempt to modernise though and bring Wimpy into the present, even 20 years ago.
They Do exist, - there's one near where I live
Loved Wimpy as a kid, it's great they are still around today.
Me too James. They're still around, can't believe there's still 90 of them
@@GaryEats I will have to find one near me, love a bit of nostalgia.
Agreed
One near my home town that's been there since the 80's, still going strong.
Wimpy opened around 1968/1969 in Johannesburg, South Africa. STILL today, 55 years later, Wimpy will always be my first choice. It has 453 outlets in South Africa and NEVER discarded South Africa - ever! Love it!
I’ve heard they have a lot of chains in SA!!
Memories! My first Saturday job at school. Best bits….. Special Grill included Bender, burger, egg and chips. Flapjacks yummy, and knickerbocker glory was fun to make. 😊
I'm 63 and I can remember my mum treating up to a Wimpy Shake... OMG so good. Glad to see they are still alive and kicking
I can too!
OOooo, the shakes, forgot about those. Strawberry was always my go to :).
My favourite was the tomato soup with crackers. It was one of the first times I ever went out on my own.
Same here just stunned a prices i will never have one again
Great memories Martin 👍
I loved going there when i was young. Food was served on plates & with cutlery :)
Ah me too. Great memories
Yeh it was and good
and chips piping hot, salt and vinegar on the table and burger sauce available on demand. Which is now sold by franchises of Wimpy, over the counter. Because burger sauce is part of the new backbone of the UK. Along with Nandos!
My memory as a 73 year old is that the "Bendy" was called a Bender and it came with tomato and Branston pickle , no cheese, no ketchup. I loved it!
yes bender
Your description of the bender and how it was served is completely correct as I remember it well. I'm surprised that Wimpy once called it that because bender is a derogatory slang term in the UK, which is probably why they later changed the name to Bendy.
Absolutely! You just jogged my memory, they had adverts/posters in our local wimpy bar that said ‘bender in a bun”😂👌🏻
Yep! Because I used to joke about it being a bender in your bum! and still do whenever the topic of Wimpy's comes up!
That’s the one 👍🏼
Wimpy - PROPER food
McDonalds - Cheap JUNK
Support your local Wimpy!!! 😊
I agree hear hear 👍
Exactly the same lad what are you on about 😂😂
I worked for the company once and regretted it they turned me into a right wimpy!
Actually bumped into a Wimpy shop in Peterborough about four years again, couldn't believe it. Had my grandchildren with me and enjoyed it so much. Bought back the good old days of 60's. Knocks spots off of McDs and KFC, grandchildren loved it. Come back Wimpy we miss you.❤️❤️❤️❤️
I would do, but they are just too expensive. Far too much over the top. Bring the prices down, they could easily make a come back
I'm from Bexley. My dad used to take me here 50 years ago and I still occasionally pop in. Last time was six months ago.The main drawback is the price! Burgers are always hot and fresh. And the chips are lovely.
The man with the cleaning solution is the original owners son. Really nice guy who was always very kind to my late Mum when she popped in.
Bendy burgers are ok. I love the Quarter Pounder especially the special sauce and the onions. I took my Mrs here a few months ago and she looked at me like I was a Martian because I used a knife and fork. I love food on plates.
Dessert looked good. Very theatrical Gary! They have always done good ice cream.
You have made me very happy by showing this place. It's made me think of my family and better times. Great review. I'm giving the place 10. 😂
Do the buffet and I hope it's nice.
Andrew the chap you mentioned was so nice, didn’t know we were doing a review but an absolute gentleman, this was purely done to bring back memories for everyone and hopefully put a smile on our faces as it did mine mate, price mad but I didn’t really mind 👍
I go there about once a month and I can honestly say it's great. Clean, friendly, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
'because I used a knife and fork' - Always use a knife and fork in Wimpey - the chips are too hot too handle!
"Bendy"???
It was the "Bender" back in the 80s. Used to love going to our local in Hendon...Dad would treat us to a Brown Derby (Hot ring doughnut, scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and chopped nuts) 🤗🤗
What is a bendy?
In South Africa Wimpy always had best breakfasts. Not so much anymore.
That's the one, it was a Bender and they've changed it!
Obviously the term bender to anyone born before 2000 raises a smile, shame the millennial think tank saw their arse and said no way 😂
@@mattwukYeah, unless you’re a gay man, in which case it most likely brings back memories of homophobic bullying.
Go here regularly. Very friendly staff, same family have owned this place for years. Always a warm welcome
So good to hear Barry
Great video. Wimpy might be more expensive than McDonald's or say a cafe, but if you're comparing it with any other family themed restaurant, it holds its own. Wimpy provides great service, makes you smile, serves your food hot, on proper crockery with a knife and fork - taking all that into account - Wimpy is value for money. I'd rather pay a little more for good food and good service, to be honest. If Wimpy is expensive, what do you think of Five Guys? Now that's extremely expensive! Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you it was a video for nostalgia
Worked in the Minehead Wimpy Bar in summers of 1966-8. Bloody hard work, but good chance to meet the birds, especially in the ''Summer of Love'' of 1967! Trouble was (a) knackered after 50 hour work and (b) the digs didn't allow visitors. They were called 'benders' back in the day, but probably un-PC now!
That's right LOL Benders and do you remember "brown derbys"...ring doughnut with dollops of Wimpy ice cream and chocolate sauce...it was a treat
Indeed 👍🏼
What a mad world we live in
Stop moaning snowflake
Totally agree, vinegar, then salt. This is the only logical and correct way to do it. Vinegar 2nd washes the salt off. Great review as per
Spot on Nathan. Thanks mate 😄
Always vinegar first so salt sticks with the option ov extra dash of vinegar on top
Ahhhhhh.....the halcyon days of childhood!!! As a kid I remember mum making us take the bus to Southport for her day of shopping and getting off said bus feeling sick with diesel fumes and asbestos brake dust. But she always played a blinder with a trip to the Wimpy Bar with its shiny chrome everywhere and Red pretend Leather seats in a booth. A Wimpy Burger, Chips and a Strawberry Milk Shake. I always remember the big squeezy plastic tomato full of ketchup which I used to squirt all over my chips!!! Fantastico! Simpler and happier time Gary......simpler and happier times! 😃
I hope I have brought you some lovely memories David that was the point of the video 👍

Hello Gibraltar 🇬🇮 thanks for watching and commenting
The Bendy used to be called the Bender, until that became a term of playground abuse. The Wimpy in Nottingham kept the name up until it closed about ten years ago. I am really happy to see you review this place as my daughters loved Wimpy when they were little but the price is terrifying, especially considering that last night I had a set meal for two people delivered by an Indian restaurant which included two meat curries, a vegetable curry, two starters and poppadoms for £15. And I live on the coast of Dorset where it's often very expensive.
Bit like Pac-Man was originally called Puck-Man but they were scared that vandals would deface the arcade unit.....
To Duck-Man no doubt?
Loved it being the bender. I guess the price is reflective of being bought by burger King.
The price is silly really Dan
Those portions have got to be tiny, that's a £30-35 meal in the midlands, with or without delivery fees included depending on service used.
wimpy deserve to have a bigger presence than they have. Great review.
Thanks Jim 👍🏼
It's also much more filling than McDonald's that leaves you hungry in an hour or two.we must support wimpy
The quality of the food product is night and day. McDonalds is awful.
McDonalds used to be ‘moreish’ in the 80’s and 90’s, now it’s just ‘binnish’. Even if you ‘customise’, it is still cold, a chew fest, or perhaps it’s just me getting old. It finished it for me when the ‘Big Breakfast’ was dropped from the menu. Extra Butter and loads of pepper, set me up for the day.
Never really a Wimpy kid, Little Chef, yes, but having a Wimpy was a bit sniffy back in the day. Glad this one is still going though. And long may it continue to do so.👍🙂
Also Burger King that charge a fortune for absolute garbage. Used to be the best, absolute carnage now
Only one problem with that, Wimpys only seem to exist on the occasional motorway services these days.
It is more filling but also a lot more expensive Mark
Mate it’s literally a cafe which is iconically named Wimpy and that’s it! It isn’t Five Guys but it’s British and the nostalgia is still there for people! I’m pleased it is still there to be honest.
I agree Callum
It's been an absolute honour watching this channel blossom every week!
I particularly love the buffet & Indian restaurant/gastro pub reviews!
Talking of pubs, it'd be awesome to see a review of Wembley's match-day hub, "The Torch." They're loaded burgers & wings are fantastic!
Ditto.
I really appreciate that mate, means a lot. I've got a special Indian video coming up in a couple of weeks so you will hopefully like. I'll take a look and see what I can do!
@@GaryEats Fantastic!
Love the buffet videos :)
Agreed,I love Gary’s reviews & his channel,Everyday I’m Eating & High Peak Autos are pretty much all I watch on UA-cam now!!
I grew up in Bexleyheath and have always loved coming here, the owner is a very nice man, he really goes above and beyond for everyone.
Yes, a lovely family
This was my birthday treat back in the late 70s in Chatham wimpy.....You have made me want to re visit a Wimpy just for the memories, Thankyou Gary
That is way I did this video thank you 😊
At school, I put Wimpy as my third choice for work experience as I wanted to be a chef and I could not think of a third choice. So I put Wimpy down for a laugh and I only bloody got it !! (this was back in 1989)
To be honest, it was the best 2 weeks ever and staff back then including myself was aloud to eat anything and drink as much soda as you wanted.
I was on the grill and pretty much ate every item. Fish and chips was my fav... After the 2 weeks, I was offered a part time job which I took and ate free Wimpy for the next 2 years before moving on to proper cooking in hotel kitchens.
Haha I’m really glad you enjoyed it, great story
Incredible! That interior is how Wimpy used to be when I was young in the late 80s a real time warp! It looks clean and well maintained though
Wimpy are one of those places I forget are still going! The burgers are quite nice and I think they have started to grow a little again!
The last time I went was about 1995!
Brilliant to see Tom. Even if it was overpriced, a trip down memory lane was great
I remember being a child in the 80s and Wimpy were offering counter service then in the same style as McDonalds. Your food was given to you on a tray and the burgers came in little boxes - styrofoam I think.
McDonalds and Wimpy both did birthday parties then for children. Wimpy were more popular with my school friends back then because of Mr Wimpy!
Amazing memories, I am 56 and still remember going to Wimpy in Woking as a treat. These days were before all the fast food we have now…
Great memories
Can't argue with you Gary, at 56 years of age, even now, if I see a Wimpy, I cannot walk passed it. Not the greatest of burger bars, but one bite takes you back decade's.
Top draw review.
This was all about the nostalgia Ken and I loved it
Fond childhood memories - best milkshakes!!! Thanks for another good one Gary
You’re very welcome 😉
I have been there! I lived 500 yards away from it in 2016/2017, just off the Broadway in Bexleyheath! I never knew it was the first. Breakfast muffins cooked to order. I sat in the seats, back left, just over your left shoulder chief! I had a bacon and egg muffin and a sausage patty and egg muffin, both with cheese. Scrumptious. Also, I used to go to Wimpy when I was a wee lad. Mum and Dad were out for dinner on a Tuesday, when I was about 13 or 14, in the mid to late 80's. On the way home from school, stop at the Debden in Essex Wimpy, Halfpounder with cheese, QP with cheese, a CB and a large Choc Shake. Thats gotta be nigh on 2,000 kcals! I was a growing lad back then! Wimpy is the best!
Bringing back a little bit of nostalgia 😊
Went to this Wimpy countless times as a kid along with the one in Woolwich. Love it
It's very nice Sam
As a 'mod' in the 60s, my hangout was the local Wimpy. In 1968, those 'bendy' hot dog sausage jobs were called 'benders'. Say no more there. I think an egg & cheeseburger was about two bob. Then Britain went decimal soon after and prices consequently doubled, in reality. So I'm the chap with the parka and RAF roundel on the back - briefly flashed up in the video. Nice review Gary. I'd swerve Wimpy myself now. Buffet review? YES PLEASE!
Just a bit of nostalgia Dale and I’ll definitely be doing the buffet 👍
I was a mod as well and loved my parka with the target and had another with madness on the back! We went shopping in Carnaby street… now living in New Zealand and have taken my family back and showed them! Thanks for the memory!!
The absolute perfect timing @ 1:20 when you said double Patty ( see background lol )
😂😂😂
Amazing! A bet the shakes are good as well!
Ha yeah I noticed that as well, well spotted cat !! 😝🤣
Should be in burger King with those whoppers
Now we know why people are paying £29 for burger and chips
Lovely to see Wimpy around....I am sure they used to serve the Tomato Ketchup in a plastic replica tomato...happy days!! Thanks Gary.
They did 👍
I love your reviews sir. They are honest, insightful and hand in great directional navigation to where to go in UK for a good meal. Thank you!
Very kind and much appreciated 👍
We used to have a Wimpey in the 80's in my home town Hartlepool, it was always a special treat to eat in there. Then McDonalds came to town x three outlets and no surprise Wimpey's closed sadly. Yes. it was a little bit overly expensive but you did have five items which all looked very palatable in my humble opinion. It had a nice ambience, staff were very helpful and pleasant and it was a blast from the past, nostalgia. I appreciate your thoughts and ethos regarding supporting family franchises because if we don't they disappear quickly so good for you Gary. Always an enjoyable watch matey.
Thank you John the issue is definitely price
Hey John, reading through the comments there a lot about it being more expensive than MacDonalds and others. It is more expensive but that is because staff actually serve you at the table with real crockery and cutlery. It is just burgers and fries but delivered in a way that does cost more. If someone wants a crap burger and fries thrown in a greasy bag then they should go to Burger king or MacDonalds..and there is nothing wrong with that. But I think paying a bit more to be table served with better burger and fries is worth it. I hope Wimpy returns to your home town Hartlepool so you can enjoy that nostalgia again.
@@dazuk1969 good point personal service, and not ridiculously over run with Uber and Just Eat delivery staff. It's getting serious in my towns McDonalds.
A real trip down memory lane for me as well , remembering the Wimpy bar back in the 80 's in New Malden high street .Always support local business .
Great memories, I agree Anthony
It's all about the Nando's and Spoon's in New Malden now if your going non Korean.
I worked at several Wimpy Counter Service Restaurants in the early 80’s, on the team that opened new branches across the U.K., great memories, but all the big ones became Burger Kings as Wimpy was seen as too ‘square’ a brand (even though it was originally an American import), and the rest became this weird hybrid of table/counter service, but I love how they’ve kept all the classics.
Oh yes 👍🏼
The counter service one in my city was busy until the end, i was gutted when it closed
aw your face was a picture..so good to go back to the old days..(well not so long) Wimpy was always a treat. Good to see it making a come back. x
Thanks and yes, me too!
Wimpy was the first fast food restaurant my father took me to, and I loved it. Hamburger, chips, strawberry milkshake and a brown derby. The adult version just swaps in a half pounder.
There are a few new Wimpy restaurants popping up, but the ones to go for are the old family owned ones. Bexleyheath, Eltham, Wembley Park…
Another one in Beckenham as well
True! I haven’t been to Beckenham since 2012. New one In Orpington as well, but sadly it’s not very good. The established ones are better as the owner know they are serving up a piece of history.
I absolutely love Wimpy. Wish they would bring them back across the UK. Brilliant review
Thank you
I dont have a problem finding a wimpy in the uk…..
Yea, it is a shame a lot of them shut down-sure you can find one/have one next time you go on a British holiday or something!
Where in UK you from?
@@mikekaraoke Wimpy have a mom and pop diner type experience..they engage you as a person and don’t just shout a number and throw a bag at you..

My last visit was a couple of years ago, the only Wimpy in Merseyside- Birkenhead! The table service, plates, knives and forks are wonderful! Love the flavour of their burger!
Glad you like them David 👍🏼
As a 70 year old I can remember Wimpy very well . They started disappearing after the arrival of McDonalds etc. Nice to see them coming back . Nostalgia can be expensive you only have to look at Classic Cars where people pay well over the odd’s because their father had one or they couldn’t afford it at the time.
This was all about memories 👌👌
Great review really enjoyed Thanks for bringing back all the happy memories from my childhood thank you for that regards Greg
A trip down memory lane
Great review Gary. That happens to be my local branch in Bexleyheath. We have eaten in there on few occasions and I think your review was spot on. On the pricey side for burger and chips but is better than mcdonalds all day long. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Stuart. Much appreciated mate 👍🏼
In the 70s we went to wimpy for Knickerbocker Glorys
Excellent
Also the Brown Derbys.
Me Too, are they still on the menu?
@@scotts_stuff Yes after all this time.
@@VincentRE79 I might have to for a visit , not had one of those in years and one of my happy childhood memories
My Nan used to treat my sister and I to a Wimpy burger and chips back in the 70’s school holidays. I always remember they used to have tomato ketchup in a large squeezy plastic tomato, it was lovely. Me and my partner went to Wimpy recently after all these years and the food was really good. They also had a special offer on the lovely deserts. 😁
Great to hear :) lovely
Last time I went to Wimpy was when I was 11 years old, 1996. Went with my late father and we watched Jingle All The Way then had a Wimpy. Great memories mate..
Very good memories indeed
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman
Well what a blast from the past this was, it had me up in my loft looking for a receipt i kept from my tenth birthday in 1976 (that was the really hot year if you remember)
On that day my dad took me to work with him in Kent and we went to Wimpy as a treat.
My dad had the Wimpy grill at 36p, i had a cheeseburger at 21p, with fries at an extra 9p, and i had a thick chocolate shake at 15p and my dad a coffee at 8p, i always remember the bill came to 89p and he paid with a one pound note and i got the 11p change to keep.
As for your review today the food did seem quite average and really expensive.
As for the Buffet clips i love them, especially the Indian restaurant ones with the big selection.
Chris.
Hi Chris. Those used to be days didn’t they? Appreciate you watching and hopefully the expensive buffet is on the way!
Looks like Gary had a great time
Nothing but smiles 🙂
It was a bot of nostalgia
Just gone back 40 years gary , kids burgers n fries , then a Knickerbocker glory with a long spoon, this was a birthday treat for me 🎉 thank you sir...👍👍 Best reviewer on YT

You have a great warm energy Gary! Keep up the good vibes 😊
Thank you very kind
Great video Gary! I used to love Wimpy when I was a kid, this brought back a lot of memories.
Thank you Rob!
There are no Wimpy restaurants up in the north at all now. The last time I had a Wimpy must have been over 25 years ago and I absolutely loved them when I was a young un. Nothing compares with them, those tiny perfectly cut onions, their unique pale orange burger sauce. They were always the absolute best. Wish they still operated up in the north.
It’s a bit of nostalgia
are 'uddersfield, birkenhead and rotherham not up north?
My youngest son is giving me grief to go to the Huddersfield one this Saturday. I told him when I was a lad all we had was Wimpy and he is on a mission to get me there again. I vaguely remember the experience and taste of their burger so will be interesting as probably well over 25 years since being at one as well! My son has been couple of times with his teenage judo club and they all love it. Lets see how Saturday goes.
Im pretty sure the Bendy used to be called the 'Bender in a Bun' but they must have changed it for some inexplicable reason. Either way it looked good - another great review Gary, keep them coming!
Thank you Jonny and you are completely correct
thanks for your videos, you have a great attitude and they are really enjoyable
That is a very kind comment and thank you very much for the donation it’s very much appreciated, have an excellent week 👍
The Wimpy was my favourite burger as a teenager. Decent cup of tea in those places too
Spot on
Thanks Gary. That took me right back down Memory Lane to West Ealing in 1962. I was 16, and used to hang out with my mates. We were fringe Mods and Rockers as we had bikes and scooters. The Wimpy Benders soon gave way to other types of benders. Greetings from Bali [where I can get a reasonable burger and chips for 3 quid]
Wow Bali thank you for watching and commenting Steve really appreciated
The West Ealing Wimpy closed around 2015.
Thanks. They had a good run then. I did the washing up for half a day. Me out the back, my mates out the front. Not much fun for a 16 year old.@@VincentRE79
@@steveroperfilms Was sad to see it close, most Wimpy's have closed in London. I used to live in Acton and we had one there as well.

Memories of youth! Love it Gal
Thank you too
There is a Wimpy in Wembley that must be of the same era, and has the same decor ("Early "Wogan""). They do, for my money, the very best fish, chips and peas in London. Always freshly cooked and absolutely delicious. It is just a sort of miraculous survival and takes you back to happy late 80s and early 90s days out with your Mum. I love it!
I’m pleased it brought back some lovely memories Simon
I so miss Wimpy.Reminds me of my youth.I even used to love the Bean Burgers.Bring back Wimpy.
Completely agree Jay
So love when your videos pop up, beside the fun food reviews, you are always so upbeat and cheerful, can’t help but smile 😀
Thank you so much!!
That was a real trip down memory lane. It was a real treat to go there as a kid. I can't believe people complained about vinegar first, it's obvious vinegar goes on first 🤷♂️
Exactly!! Always vinegar first
Well that was a blast from the past . It all looked good ,loved a wimpy back in the day ,nice to reminisce even if it wasn’t the best out there . Thanks Gary.👍🥰🤩🙏🏼👏
A bit of nostalgia Karen x
We travel to Wimpy at Bexleyheath regularly just for breakfast, Great service, friendly staff and excellent value for money...definitely NOT expensive for the quality of the food provided. May Ibbi and all at Wimpy (Bexleyheath)continue to go from strength to strength and be around for another 60 years xx
Lets hope so!
Wimpy was my first burger growing up in the UK....didn't realise it was still operating... Nice review though! Will you be going one day to Cornwall to taste a traditional Cornish pasty and clotted cream scone....yum yum!
Thank you. Oh yes I will Bernie!
Oh wow, this is amazing. Wimpy was my favourite burger chain growning up hands down, i thought Wimpy was consigned to the history books, my grandparents used to take me an my two brothers in the 80s we absolutely loved it, one of my brothers even had a birthday party at a wimpy, every single one in my part of South London has long gone many years ago at least 7 shops i knew of long gone sadly, i think West Wickham was the last time I went to one with my misses for a nostalgic lunch time burger about 6 years ago. Sadly, it's gone now too. Love this Gary, happy memories indeed 😊❤
Really happy you enjoyed the video
wow! This brings back memories! Thanks Gary.
Glad you enjoyed it 😄
Great review and very nostalgic. My art tutor at college many years ago created the Wimpy sign design too !
Excellent
Good to see you trying all types of restaurant. I used to love Wimpy as a kid and can't remember the last time I saw or went to one. So this review was nostalgic for me.
Would love to see you review Babur in South East London. An oldish (38 years) Indian restaurant that also does a buffet on Sundays. Would be very interested to see your review of it.
Thanks Steve. I'll note it down mate, thanks
The last Wimpy I went to was in Basingstoke in 1988. It was better quality than Muckdonalds I thought. The pudding looks like a nightmare oversweet American thing. There are no Wimpys in Cornwall that I’m aware of.
Interesting Tracey. Thank you for watching 😄
A memory lane trip for me too!😊 going to a Wimpy in Whitehaven in the 70's , seeing the picture of the bendy sausage (with cuts across it) and drooling for it. Was surprised how long it took to cook (not the fast foods service of today 😄). Wasn't the best, food, service, ambience but hey, what other meal do you remember 5 decades on..? 👍😊 thanks for the nostalgia trip 😊
You’re more than welcome 👍🏼
We have a Wimpy in Swanage, we always pop in when passing and the staff are always friendly. Surprising to see Poppins still going, it's very similar. I do miss Little Chef!
Very glad to hear!
I used to spend hours in Wimpys in the 60s. Bromley had two in the high street one at the north end and one at the south end. My friend and I would go in one have coffee then down to the other - several times. They used to be called BENDERS in my day and were the sliced frankfurter in a circle but in those days (and this is what made them so good!) they had PanYan pickle in them. Remember PanYan???
The ketchup was in the classic red plastic tomato dispenser. And if you were lucky some holligan HADN’T poured salt into the sugar container.
Waffles???? Never had them in my day. What you got for a sweet was rumbaba. Which were nice actually with this strange white stuff that was supposed to be cream.
Wish we still had one near us.
Ah Chris, it brings back fond memories
Wimpy was a key part of my DNA growing up in the late 60s and early 70s, the go-to place for me and my mates for an affordable burger and / or sausage bender. The pioneer of UK not-so fast food served on crockery with proper cutlery.
I haven't been in a Wimpy for over 30 years and a McDonald's for over 12 years. I thought Wimpy had disappeared altogether.
It was pure pleasure for me to see you undertake a nostalgic review with a start to finish 😊😊permasmile😊😊. You loved it, despite the price. I loved it for the nostalgia and the memories it rekindled for me. To hell with the quality and price. Food 7 out of 10, nostalgia 10 out of 10, your enthusiasm for the occasion 12 out of 10.
🎉 Well done.
I really appreciate that Graham and loved reading that comment 👍🏼👍🏼
@GaryEats You're very welcome. Approximately when are you planning your pilgrimage to Whitby to enter the gateway of Fish and Chip heaven? Anytime after Easter and it gets very busy.
Gary that was absolutely brilliant remember the taste even today, there is one in Barnstaple North Devon must try it again it’s been a few years.
Go on Jeffrey give it a go lol
Went to Wimpy in Clacton a couple of weeks ago, love the veggie bean burger. I forgot they do table service. Enjoyed the visit, hadn't been for probably 30 years or more. Used to go to the one at Picadilly circus. I would go again and recommend.
Thank you Rose and appreciate you watching and commenting 👍
When I moved to Swansea Wimpy was one of the places I went to eat whilst I was waiting to find somewhere to live. Then it was somewhere me and my wife went to have a bit of a treat. There was waitress service. It was lovely. I haven’t been in a Wimpy for ages. I now live in Leeds, my nearest is in Huddersfield. Maybe a trip down memory lane could be in the near future. Love your film of the visit to Wimpy.
Thank you very much mate 👍🏼
Omg, Wimpy! Didn't know there was still one around. I can still remember my dad taking me to a party when I was a kid. I was wearing my favourite pink dress with blue ribbons, & was so excited. Then came the excitement of calling him out from behind the door to greet us all! Fantastic. 😊
Haha they still have over 90 restaurants!
MRRR WIMMMPPPPYYYYY!!! 😂
I had my birthday party at one when I was about 7 years old how cute that it’s kept the nostalgic furniture. Love it 😊 so looking forward to the expensive buffet review
Oh wow! Thank you, coming soon
Great to see you review a Wimpy Gary, haven't gotten to visit one since I was a child. Love the retro decor, the table service & the fact that things still taste the same
The same as we left it all those years ago
Thank you so much for the memories! 😊 We now live in Surrey, but originally from Cape Town, South Africa..... I'm 73 now, but when I was 5/6 yrs of age, my aunt would bring a Wimpy each, for me and my brother, on a Friday, after doing her shopping. The first takeaway fast food! What fun.... Just a patty and fried onion on it, but so delicious and such a treat, but more importantly..... Really cheap! 😂..... Just found you on UA-cam and loving every episode.... Thank you!
More than welcome Jenny
Oh for sure one of my favourites to date.
I think to us that can remember wimpy this video made us smile too Gary 😄
As I've said before I love these London reviews and was overly excited seeing several red London busses . Cheers Gary that was Marvellous !!!
Very kind Paul thank you enjoy your weekend mate 👍
I used to love a Wimpy. When i was a kid my gran used to take me to one in Upminster and i used to get double egg & chips. I was always well happy with that. Easily pleased back in the day 😊
Well I hope this brought you some great memories 👌
Omg.... 70s and 80s memories ❤
This was a trip down memory lane
Delighted you did a nostalgic review. My memories of Wimpy were finishing my Saturday job then walking into the town centre and getting my usual 'fish and chips' (breaded, not battered) and it was served in a cardbox box and cost about 80p. The highlight of my week.
Memories oh memories 👍
Good on you for giving Wimpy a review Gary. I must admit I've never had the pleasure of a Wimpy but I'll definitely give them a go now!
Why not, give it a go!
Wimpy in woolwich used to be a favourite but that was nearly 40 years ago! Back in the 70s I loved 'Golden Egg' restaurants too!
I remember Golden Egg as well 👍
The Woolwich one is still open too
Absolutely Love Wimpy ! Especially the Quarter Pounder ! , thank god there opening more stores around the UK !
Good to hear
Last time I was in a wimpy was about 2004, a long time ago. Enjoy your food Gary
Thanks Dawn. Yes, a very long time ago
Happy Valentine’s Day to you too Gary!🥂 Never heard of Wimpy here in the States but it looks very good. Another great show💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕! Thank you!
A very Happy Valentine’s Day to you too and please have a wonderful weekend xx
@user-bj4ip3uq8f The Wimpy brand was established in 1934 by Edward Gold, when he opened his first location in Bloomington, Indiana, under the name Wimpy Grills. The name was inspired by the character of J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye cartoons created by E. C. Segar. It was a long time ago, but it was originally started in the US
@@gallifreya203 wow, did not know that. Thx!🐳🏄♂️😊
I remember going to the Wimpy in Finchley Road when I was a student at university in 1974-75. Great channel, Gary. Regards from France.
Thank you Pierre. How are you enjoying France?
Hiya Gary we had a wimpy in our local shopping centre the memories were brilliant my nan and grandad took me every Saturday afternoon for years it opened in the 80s sadly it closed down during Covid your video brought back those memories thank you have a lovely weekend Graham
Imam so pleased it brought back some wonderful memories that’s why I did the review…perfect 👌
Happy Valentines day back to you Gary and the camera man. The last time me and my husband were in Wimpy was when I was pregnant with our son and he's nearly 31 but what I liked about this wimpy episode is it brought back happy memories of going to Wimpy with my nan nearly most Saturdays when I was little. Thank you, watching this put a big smile on my face x
Wow. Now that’s a long time ago!
i miss wimpy we had one in Peterborough now gone its been renamed to westgate Grill the nearest one is Kings Lynn went to wimpy years ago with Denise she liked it there brings back good memories watching video
Thanks Paul. Great memories
Kings Lynn one used to be really popular when I was growing up (90’s). The town hasn’t been overrun with McDonald’s/greggs so guessing that is how they are surviving. Used to also be a weird burger eat in restaurant near the bus station called Kingsburger
@@GaryEats Denise liked the Wimpys Milkshake. the toasted tea cake nice sometimes we had a wimpy meal i do agree with your opinion gary about mc donalds we have a wendys here in peterborough i havent tried there food yet 😊
Great video Gary havnt been to wimpy since I was a nipper but remember it well , we have a lovely little wimpy here in dorking which I think you should try when you next return to one , even worth the journey for the hill view!
Thank you for the price I may well give it a miss but will be coming to adorning in the future
My boyfriend lives in Bexleyheath and passes this Wimpy all the time. Thank you for featuring it, good fun & nostalgia 😊
